I think I learned more from playing MMO's then I did from english class when it comes to Grammar and the likes. So this woman is speaking 100% bullshit, not 99.9%, 100%.
If she calls that a scarring experience, I hope she gets raped. On one horrible afternoon that scarred me for life, I even saw a kid walking out of the public library playing a Nintendo DS.
Not sure if many read my rant, but I'd blame politicians and the media first. Consider she directly referance an article that was covered here, along with claims about video games being a primarly perpetrator behind a lack of physical activity/kids being out of shape which came from comments made by Obama.HoodedPunhist said:Yet another mandatory overly christian mom telling people on the internet that videogames are BAD and they come from the SATAN! How do I love these know-it-all persons, telling other people to destroy this horrible phenomenom before it takes over!
It indeed is a good day to be nihilist. Really, I couldn't find this many people to laugh at outside the internet.
In my major rant I think I accidently said "Dowdy". However I believe it's meant to be a sort of honest yet ironic handle. Kind of amusing when you think about it.Nibbles said:Someone should tell her that 'frumpy' isn't a good thing.
You do have good point and I do know religions have made many good things. At the same time though they have made lots of bad things. Same goes for unreligious people also of course. The thing is nowadays people mostly only hear of these "crazed zealots" who say everything their holy books deny or don't mention is EVIL. I don't have this problem with most religious people and I do have quite a bunch of friends who live in belief but I still consider them as friends. Why? Because they're not that zealous that they live ONLY by the holy books of their religion.Therumancer said:Not sure if many read my rant, but I'd blame politicians and the media first. Also in defense of Christians, I think that despite her referances this is mostly from purely temporal sources, and that she is simply inserting her religion into what she has already been convinced of. Probably to make her points more forceful to her presumed audience. Despite the Satan comments, consider she DOES also cite news sources and such in defense of her points. I disagree with her, and think she's being duped, but this is NOT purely a religious tirade.
I am not a deeply spiritual person, but perhaps it will restore some faith in humanity to remind you that for all the criticisms made about Christianity it is responsible for a number of very important things. While called backwards and characterzied as luddites in many cases consider that it was Christians who preserved a lot of knowlege and records through the dark ages and helped humanity into The Middle Ages. Chrisians also pioneered a lot of science as many monks were ALSO scientists and scholors, a point many people tend to forget. Some of the foundations of things like modern genetics came from research by monks. Punnet squares a fundemental tool for understanding/plotting genetic traits and their inheritance, and also key to evolution was created by a monk as I learned. I am not deeply spiritual, and mostly driven by what amounts to very cold logic despite being a Christian. I do not believe that religion and science nessicarly have to be contridictory despite the efforts of people on both sides and feel they have overlapped quite a bit throughout history.
It should also be noted that fanatics have also done things like carry food, medicine, and aid into some of the most desolate areas of the world simply because of their beliefs. Many people occasionally make jokes about churches setting up schools in the third world and teaching religion along with passing out food and basic eductation, but the thing is that in many cases noone else has been there, and for a long time missionaries were among the only people doing this kind of thing due to their beliefs.
There have been a number of very bad things done in the name of Christianity as well, I do not deny that. But I think people tend to forget the good that has also been done as well. Faith can be a powerful thing, and truthfully I doubt the US would have endured the early days without it.
So are overly-Religious extremely Liberal people. But I disgress.tellmeimaninja said:Overly-religious extremely conservative people are idiots. End of story.
If video games are made by the devil, then call me satanist and give me something to sacrifice.
I hope she reads and understands your e-mail, I really do, though I have a feeling she's not going to listen to logic.auronvi said:I wrote her a large e-mail. The e-mail below:
Dear Mrs. Marla Fisher,
I am writing to let you know that I disagree with your blog. I would write in the comments but something tells me you just gloss over that since internet comments tend to be written poorly and are immediate reactionary thoughts. Now that you know why I decided to write, I will inform you of the issue I have with it.
I am a 23 year old college student. I am going to school to become a game developer seeing as I have played games since I was about 6 years old. I am also a Christian which is the reason I have an issue with the article. Mostly the title. Now I have been known have gotten deep into gaming myself and would play a little bit too long and I would say that my skin might resemble the "sickly pallor" that you refer to but I far from believe that I have been influenced by the devil to become slothful. Everyone has their faults and everyone has to strive to better themselves but writing blogs/articles that speak out in such a negative way toward something that is no more wrong than the movie industry or television is just plain ignorant.
It is hard to hold some of my anger back and present this respectfully but, I have done more creative writing, more art, and more logic and math than I ever did while in grade school than when I was learning how to make and even play games on my own. In your article you continue to make assumptions that these kids are not learning or getting anything out of these games. Hopefully I will enlighten you about how I see games and maybe make a dent because by about the second half of your article, you conveyed a sort of pride in insulting the game industry along with a certain elitist attitude towards how you reading your whole life makes you better in life than one who would play games. You can see how I take insult to that.
Games are still new. They are still not very well understood by most of the world and why people value them as entertainment. For every Grand Theft Auto/Call of Duty/Gears of War/Halo that is released, there are hundreds of games with very sincere motives. Even the games mentioned above have some value to them if you don't just rub them off as smut. Grand Theft Auto does reward for getting through missions that involve killing gangsters, kidnapping a teenage girl and stealing drugs. Behind this is a narrative that would rival most box office hits in the movies. It's not you yourself doing it, but a character in a play. The game is about a Eastern European war veteran that is struggling to find his place in the world. This leads him to America where he struggles with his past as he looks for revenge. Someone with a history of trauma. We have both seen movies or shows that show how hard it is to feel like you fit in in a world after you have been tore apart by war. This is his story and it takes some dark paths. I am not saying it is the best story ever, and there is some very dark humor in the game and I am sure you would not like playing it but that doesn't mean it is pure evil.
Now should a kid play this game? Most definitely not but they will want to. Just like most kids want to see that R rated movie, or a naked lady (or boy) in a magazine or online. They are going to want to. I am not a parent and I am in no place to tell someone how to raise a kid but as an observer I know that it is a parents responsibility, not to protect them from this stuff, but to teach them what it is so that they can understand and make choices for themselves.
Games are innocent. Games are just there for our enjoyment and want to be played. The evils that are surrounded by games are the same as most anything in this world. Eat too much food, you get fat. Watch too many movies, get pale. Do too much drugs, you get sick or die. Video games are no different than these other temptations and that they should also be played in moderation. Well, drugs maybe none is better but I don't think games have as much adverse effects as that of drugs.
"When do kids ever think these days?" Games are not only limited to entertainment. There are articles showing that surgeons who play games verses those who don't perform more accurately in surgery due to an increase in hand eye coordination (if you REALLY want me to I can dig up the links). The military sees that soldiers that are gamers work better with the equipment they use and can fire a gun better (maybe not the best example but that's a different argument). More and more schools are using simulation based games to teach kids physics and math and even history. Even more research has been done that when someone learns something through an interactive process such as a game or simulation that the knowledge is retained better than conventional books and lectures. Most of modern day computer graphics and communication technology would never have been advanced as fast if it weren't for video games.
It is hard to hold some of my anger back and present this respectfully but, I have done more creative writing, more art, more logic and math than I ever did in school when I was learning how to make and even play games. I know that this is because you lack the knowledge of games and what they are and can do but don't insult our intelligences and write about how kids are becoming drooling idiots. You are calling me an idiot.
I say, get a Nintendo Wii. Not many violent games and if you learn about the rating system (www.esrb.org) you can avoid them all together. I think it would be good for your house and your family. Family game night is now no longer a board game or a deck of cards like even I remember it. Its a Wii or a Playstation and a nice comfy couch. You will be the fun house you wanted to be and can serve them Popsicles while they play (well, that may make for sticky controllers but hey). Since I know you have raised smart kids, I promise you won't have to ever call 911 to get your kid off of it. Maybe yell at him a bit to get off and do homework but that's just normal parenting.
Sincerely,
Ryan D. Dillon

P.S. I am writing this sincerely and because I want to protect the industry that I have grown so fond of and plan on making a living. I can't just stand and watch as people demonize a new form of entertainment. Just as rock and roll and television was demonized, the gaming industry will get the same and I will be there defending it!
P.S.S Should I become a writer? I know I could... despite playing "games" all my life.
This is an excellent message you've composed. I've done the same for people. Logic and reason are deadly weapons. Do share your response(s) as this is well thought out and I doubt someone could ignore it.auronvi said:I wrote her a large e-mail.
