Totally agree its competition in games that are stopping them becoming an amazing art form. My epiphany was when i was playing MDW2 multiplayer I had many high pitched morons screaming about rpg's or whatever. There was someone who was clearly playing with a mate on the other team and had both men on the edge of a cliff so noone could see them. His mate used a tactical insertion then he shot him, and again and again and again. So basically he would not actually play the f'ing but so he could get 30 kills and nuke everyone in seconds. I hate that game so much!
Red Faction Guerrilla is my number 1 multiplayer game. every LAN me and my friends have, that is literally all we play. not intentionally, it just ends up that way
If you've still got a PS2, go out and get yourself a copy of ZOE:2.
That's just awesomely fun right there. If you want something more modern then get Project Sylpheed.
Burnout Revenge too. Tearing around the tracks wrecking yourself and others was simple, cathartic enjoyment. I believe the series lost that with Paradise.
My game for pure balls to the wall, over the top, ham and cheese fun:
Bayonetta.
I can't explain it, I got the game used with a voucher so it only cost like 15 bucks, but holy shit on a shingle the FUN I was having; every second bit of dialog made me laugh my arse off and I found myself feeling pretty pleased afterwards.
Not that I don't enjoy a good FPS like CS:S or MW1/2 etc, but for me time, I can't go past Bayonetta. I don't care that Yahtzee savaged it, I fucking love it.
Maybe its because they are marketed towards children but this might be the single great difference between consoles and handhelds, espcially the DS. I can say that most, if not all of the games in my handheld collection are fun even when they lack the polish of a console title. Case and point, ever played Assassin's Creed: Discovery?
Sometimes, it really doesn't matter how much "fun" you're having if you're making the game less fun for the people around you. I know that people will call you a noob for doing anything on MW2, but I'm sure speed and wall hacks are fun as well.
But yes, the chainsaw massacre mode on Left 4 Dead 2 is a whole lot of fun. Everyone just runs around like crazy and doesn't even care. Team Fortress 2 is obvious, and playing pretty much anything with friends is fun.
Why does nobody have fun on games anymore? Specifically multiplayers.
I am currently running around a game of MW2 Online with an M16 w/ Grenade Launcher, One Man Army, Danger Close and Commando; and you know what? For the first time since I bought the damn game I actually realised I am having fun! The only other games I have ever played where I have had genuine fun are any Ratchet and Clank game, TF2 and a PS2 game called Black (look it up)!
Ratchet and Clank (for those in the know) and TF2 are obvious "fun" choices. So I will explain Black to you for giggles.
Black is/was an single player only FPS for the PS2 circa 2002ish (don't quote me on that) it had a very basic story (something about betrayal) but in truth, the story was unimportant. Any mission could be played on it's own with no back story and you knew exactly what you had to do in each mission: Kill everything and blow up anything! The guns were big and made load noises and were satisfying to fire. Plenty of variety and pretty good graphics made it "fun" to play, charging through a level guns blazing, explosions, buildings collapsing etc.
So if you own a PS2 and see Black in a discount bin, BUY IT!
Yes I also have 2 people on mics in the game insulting me for being a "noob" and "ruining the game" and such but nothing can stop me playing like this as a game isn't supposed to be about caring what other people think or how they enjoy the game.
It is how I enjoy the game, and nothing else should matter to me if I am having fun!
That is what bothers me about (mainly) multiplayers these days. Everybody is talking about "balance", "unfairness", "noobtubes" and "knives" but the fact is you play a multiplayer to have fun first and win second.
And if I have to get a few people riled up to have fun in a game I am playing and winning! Then so be it.
So my point is this: What games do you genuinely have "fun" playing and do you agree/disagree with my point about MW2?
EDIT: Oh Yea! WET! Ever played WET? No? Go play it! It is the most fun you can ever have in 3rd person!
EDIT2: Bioshock 2s MP is also great fun, shooting fire from your hand never gets old!
i agree partially, of course its FUN to one man army noobtubes across the map and its FUN to use lightweight, marathon and commando. i say if you enjoy it then use it, my friend used to get grief for akimbo glocks but he always said im just enjoying myself and isnt that what the game is about.
but you have to ask yourself im having fun at the expense of someone else, someone elses fun might be ruined by the fact they dont have a chance to spawn because of the noobtubes flying around
i think this new blackops looks alot more fun with a zombie mode, a crossbow, an explosive RC car and smiley face lazer sights.
also if you want a fun game id look into dead rising 2, it hits shelves on 1st october and it looks really fun, basically you play as your average guy and you just beat up ALOT of zombies with some crazy weapons looks great
Or throw it into the nearest gamestop and pray for the person who happens to buy your unfun game. (Im looking at you Too Human)
OT: Portal, Halo 3 Multiplayer, because of the custom games, not matchmaking, Army of Two:TFD
Black, Assassins Creed 2 (its just bamf to fall from 20 ft and stick a knife in two people's jugulars) Rock Band 2 (I use it to help me learn how to play songs on my real guitar) Super Mario 3
And that's why I don't play those types of games. I'm not a competitive player. Any game where I am insulted over my headset for not playing a game the way 4 random people want me to, is not a game for me.
I'll stick with the games where people just want to have fun, thank you very much.
Right now, I'm having fun playing Borderlands. No one really yells at you in that game.
Ah this brings back memories of Time Splitters, now that was a game that both dident take itself seriosley and was fun because of it, trust me when you watch a builder running away from a little girl wielding a lasergun while playing as a poltergiest in the form of sticks and stones(in a humanoid shape) throwing bricks at people you dont go back, even the campaign was mental the first two dident really have a story but the third you end up in a room with three future selves and you must play as each consecutivley(sorry) to escape...
And it had BOTS! remember bots? you could play matches for fun without an internet connection and each had a custom difficulty setting.
Damn it now I want to play it again but I have no idea where it is.
The lack of any split screen multilayer in games now is a topic my friends and I repeatedly cover, how I miss those days...
I still have fun with games today (halp, I'm stuck in DQ9 and I can't get out), but I do miss having 3 other friends around all of us promising to mop the floor with each other.
