This guy has a really interesting theory that after a while makes a lot of sense: http://theantnest.com/post/279430462/half-life-2-episode-one-review
In a nutshell he theorises that G-Man is pretty much Valve, someone who creates the path for you. Ever-present yet never in the way, he shows you what he wants you to see and eclipses everything that he doesn't. Sounds like a game designer to me :p

Though Valve have said that they will give him an actual background sort of thing, the theory is still relevant as it shows off Valve's sheer, almost maddening commitment to their art.

If and when they do give him a background, I always thought of him as a future Human, like, a VERY FAR future Human. A future Human with capabilities that range from time travel to almost literally manipulating space to see their goals achieved. Probably like a Time-Lord except without the pesky machines, Future Humanity can just do that shit with their mind.

Some sort of projection (seems absurd that the entity actually looks like that) of some inter dimensional beast. A jester like character, orchestrating, creating chaos, spouting cryptic truths mixed with lies. An omnipotent narrator. His master, if he has one, has plans. Gordon is important.

Ooh! Just thought! Maybe he's an audition-er. Like there's thousands like him across thousands of dimensions, all testing individuals for some unseen task.

I have a creeping suspicion his name came from "Garry-Man" but from what I understand he keeps referencing "my employees" so maybe he's "Government-Man".
G-Man is a short term for government agent. He's never identified as such in any half-life games, but Adrian calls him such in his diary entries that came with Opposing Force. Valve started using the name too, and it just kind of stuck after that.

OT: I don't think there's nearly enough information about him to even speculate, but if you really want to guess I'd go with the "works for another multidimesional empire" theory.

I like to think he's Slender Man (if you don't know what that is, look it up at once). He's omnipresent and seems to have control over space and time when he wants to. And his physique is tall and slender-like, but I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine.
thanks a lot for bringing that image up in my head again.

G-Man, to me, is simply alien. I don't mean that he's from out of town (pfffft, that was kinda obvious), I mean he is a manifestation of everything that we perceive to be alien; the way he talks like he's not used to English, the thin bone structure, the strange eye colour, the off-colour suit, the way he talks, and even his window's peak are all traits that we don't really see all that often. And, as for his employers, I agree that G-Man knows much more than any human should and could be employed by almost anyone or, alternatively, no one. Perhaps G-Man is employed by himself and his own reasoning or moral judgment of what should, can, won't, and should not be. And perhaps that is the real secret to G-Man; he is merely someone or something that knows too much . . . .

I really don't think hes Gordon from the future. Too Cliché for Valve.
Its a bit fanciful, but I think he is from some gigantic government that is so powerful, it controls all of time and space.
If one can control the past, one can control the future...

I think he's a manifestation of Gordon's schizophrenia.
... Which put him in a stasis for 20 or so years?
He didn't put him in stasis-- he dominated his other personality and then quit at the beginning of HL2 because he gets his jollies from watching Gordon in danger. I say that because, if you'll notice, he only appears immediately before Gordon encounters a new threat for the first time.

When Gordon meets Eli Vance in HL2, Eli points out that Gordon hasn't changed one bit since the Black Mesa incident. Hence, he was put in stasis by G-man until his next 'assignment'.
Or he just has one of those faces.

He could be human... Just one hired by his employers years ago for something and eventually moving up in the "company" or whatever and recieving powers.
