Why do people feel Borderlands is such a good game? It's... one long drawn out grindfest. There's practically no story. The item drops are the only interesting part of the game, and all that amounts to is a cluttered inventory until you realise the next awesome gun is five minutes away. I'm enjoying playing it, but the game of the year? I know it's been a slow year, but come on!

Something with a decent narrative for GOTY, please.
I kinda agree. When I first got it I was all over the Borderlands bandwagon, but now it seems kinda bland and repetitive to me. I'm working on my 3rd level 50 character and honestly the mere thought of leveling a 4th makes me want to puke.

It's really a shame that with all the millions and millions of guns in the game, there are only 2 or 3 varieties for each class that are worth a damn, and those are few and far between. I'm using a L19 Double Anarchy on my L43 Siren.

Congrats! You win.

If we're doing our personal GOTY here, mine is definitely Cryostasis. I liked Uncharted 2 or Arkham Asylum, but I didn't love either. Obviously I haven't gotten my hands on Assassin's Creed 2 or MW2, but spoiler alert: I didn't like the first of either game. Dragon Age probably is the closest mainstream game to Cryostasis for me, but I haven't even come close to finishing it, so I'll hold my judgement.

... That is my personal GOTY, like I said. If I was to make a prediction, it would be Uncharted 2. Borderlands most certainly won't win at any of the major sites, nor will any of the handheld or indie games (or any lesser-known game, for that matter... *points at avatar*), so I'd imagine that it boils down to Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed 2 or Modern Warfare... 2.
Man, easily one of the most immersive shooters I've played in ages. Wonderfully atmospheric, unique story, great setting, beautiful graphics, all in all adding up to the best game of this year for me.

I would say MW2, Arkham Asylum, or Uncharted 2.

Stupid Arkham Asylum glitched out on me yesterday and now there's no ground on my hard difficulty file, so that's been bumped down on my list now just because I'm annoyed.

It only makes sense to split this by platform:

PC: ARMA II
PS3: WipEout HD Fury
Wii: Sin and Punishment 2 (available in Japan)
360: Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony
DS: Scribblenauts
PSP: Half-Minute Hero
iPhone: Doodle Jump
... seriously? these are your game of the years?
Yep. Post yours...
well i dont have a 360 or wii, but i'm sure Left 4 Dead 2 would be my fav if i had xbox. no idea about wii or PC game of year, since the only PC game i bought this year was Sims 3. As for DS, i only got mario kart but i think that came out a while ago.
I did want to play half-minute hero for PSP, i still havent uploaded the demo though. Dissidia is Great but i don't think its a game of the year.
no iphone

i think your PS3 choice is what baffled me really... wipeout?

i also can't see the gta4 spin-off being that good, let alone game of the year.
Sure, why not WipEout?

I could have been dull and said Uncharted 2 or MW2 (which isn't even out yet, but people are predicting will win GOTY), but that's obvious.

If I had to pick an overall winner, it would have to be ARMA II (despite its bugs):

"could have been dull and said Uncharted 2 or MW2"? that makes no sense. you are not dull for stating a great game is a great game just bc everyone else says it is a great game. They are both friggin great games! if you say wipeout just bc everyone else is saying uncharted 2 and MW2 and you dont want to say the same thing, thats just stupid. wipeout doesnt compare to them. get real.

and arma II, i'm sorry, but after watching your clip, looks like a dull version of Modern warfare.

ugh i'm still disgusted with your wipeout suggestion for GotY

Uncharted 2. :O I take one look at the game and I start having seizures.

I'm very good at playing through seizures now.

Most new games I've played this year have been horrendus. Anno1404 was a cool game but it's just...well, between the completel lack of a lan option and the way over the top DRM the game failed. Killing floor was fun, but I doubt it would class as 'having come out this year'. Maybe league of legends? Brutal legend was cool but I doubt it's going to have been popular enough for GOTY. This really was a disapointing year for gaming (unless I'm forgetting something that came out early in the year). Was mirrors edge released this year? I suppose that could take it, it was an interesting concept and fairly well executed.

Y'know, considering how many games are coming out over the next month and a half (or just came out) that I won't be able to buy until I can convince my wife that yes, it IS a good idea for me to use the credit card so I'll have games for winter break before going back to school for 24 credit hours (subject to dean approval) in January, I might not be able to actually play everything I want to play in order to render a proper judgment before the year is out.

I'm thinking any Game of the Year award I give is subject to revision long after the fact---after I've played Football Manager 2010, Arsenal of Democracy, For the Glory, and Tropico 3 (at least. There may be more!)

Borderlands
and
Arkham Asylum

The former gives me a chance to finally play an Openworld FPS with a friend while the Latter was possibly the greatest single-player game I've played this year.

id say either L4D2, Uncharted 2 or AC2.

for 2 individual genres, i have some candidates (that i´ve played or tried demos of):

RPG: Dragon Age: Origins, Torchlight.
FPS: MW2 (despite major cockslapping, the press will probably overrate it), L4D2, Killing Floor.

I love it because it's just such pure fun.

I liked the old school lack of a big plot, it was pure, simple and hella violent.

I think it gets at the obsessive compulsive in a lot of gamers. Loot collection is a driving factor in lots of games, like Diablo, Oblivion, even Fable.

Well, given the corruption in the industry it pretty much comes down to who bought Game Of The Year this year. You can look at the contenders by looking at the ratings though the year with any given source. It largely comes down to who bought the most advertising from the reviewers and thus got the best reviews while still having a game that was fairly decent.

I'd be VERY surprised if Borderlands becomes a game of the year contender since on Gamefaqs I think they were saying it pulled an 8.5. I think Dragon Age Origins (despite being my personal pick) was in the same general catagory.

Earlier during the year during the "sandbox super hero" head to head between Prototype and Infamous I think a lot of people wound up giving Infamous ratings in the 9s, where Prototype scored in the 8s.

I haven't seen Modern Warfare or Battlefield's ratings at this paticular moment.

From what I've seen it seems like it SHOULD wind up being Batman: Arkham Asylum, Vs. Infamous by the numbers I've seen. I personally think Batman deserves the victory however.

As an RPG junky I would have liked to see the final contenders be between Dragon Age and Borderlands, but I just don't see that happening.

Plus to be honest, while Borderlands is more my style due to the RPG elements, when it comes to sandboxy shooters I think Red Faction: Gueriella is simply a better game despite not really being much of a Gueriella warfare sim. This is coming from someone who was very wary about that title and only wound up playing it as much as he did due to receiving it as a gift.

Generally speaking this year was rife with a lot of potential, but it seems like nearly every game wound up falling short of what it could have been. The general reactions I've been seeing (and this isn't just speaking for myself) is that "this game is good, but really needed more work put into it".

Ironically I think what makes Batman such a strong contender this year is simply that they put massive amounts of work into it, the entire thing oozes polish. Not to mention the fact that the whole viral marketing campaign (the Arkham Asylum security cameras and such on their sites) was pretty awesome as far as such things go, so even their ads were fairly classy. Where others have tried similar things they wound up falling short of that.

This is simply my opinion of course.
