I don't know if anyone has said this already, because i'm too lazy to read every single post on this thread, the original Portal.
The cake joke was funny at first, but i still know people who make that joke at every opportunity and still think its funny. It has almost ruined the game for me.

Mass Effect, Call of Duty, the first Portal, (potentially the second as well), and...Minecraft?

Any Moba game (DOTA, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth) seems to draw this hyper-competitive fanbase. I really couldn't keep playing League of Legends for it's shitty community. It's scary to imagine that DOTA and HoN are worse.

Fans don't ruin games.

The only problems fans create for games exist inside the head of those who gives a crap about the fans, aka. you. Or in short: It's you who are ruining Halo for yourself, because you are letting the fanbase affect you when you don't have to.

Fans, however, sometimes ruins sequels because developers sometimes let them have too much influence instead of following their instincts.
I call bullshit. Multiplayer games can and are ruined by the people you play them with. DotA is exceptionally newbie unfriendly and the community almost prides itself on treating them like shit. Similarly, people who don't play like a team in Battlefield get curbstomped by enemies that do, so while your doing teamwork shit like healing and guarding flags, the ten snipers are making the game a waste of time as you have no hope of victory.

There is a difference between letting someone's behaviour get to you and people who are being complete dicks and sucking the fun out of the game for others. A noisy kid on the mic is the latter. A kid grabbing the flag and purposfully running around like a headless chicken for no reason is the former.

Have fans ever ruined a game for me? No, not really; unlike a lot of people I know, I'm not going to just stop enjoying something because other fans are dicks/weeaboos. That does not mean, however, that I have never been embarrassed to admit to liking a game/movie/whatever fans might be into, as a result of a rabid fan-base. Allow me to explain:

I love zombies. I love Vampires. I love Family Guy. I love Final Fantasy VII. I love The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love Halo 2 (specifically 2, don't really enjoy any of the others). Call of Duty: The Next One is generally a good time.

All of the things I have mentioned have had the chance to be ruined by their fans, for various reasons. Zombies, for example, have always been a favorite of mine... imagine my disappointment when they turn out to be some fan-boy wet dream. Vampires were nearly ruined by Twilight and it's ilk, and even before Twilight, there were the "vamp fags", yound people, mostly girls and gay dudes, who hung out at special clubs pretending to be vampires. Not ever LARP... just... why? Family Guy and Final Fantasy both have annoying fans, and when people think of Rocky Horror, they tend to think of hordes of men dressed as whorish women for novelty. Halo and Call of Duty need no explanation.

Still love it all, though. Why would I let a bunch of strangers decide what I should like?

The playerbase ruined WoW for me. Antisocial jerks wherever you went.
This. This is exactly why I hope no game ever kills WoW. We don't need those assholes invading TOR or GW2.

Final Fantasy VI's fans have made the game seem extremely undesirable to me. I have yet to have Final Fantasy VI pitched to me in a way that isn't just a massive Final Fantasy VII bash.

"Oh, man, it's so much better than VII. You'll HATE VII after you play VI, it's so brilliant."

"It's not until you see how amazing and deep Kefka is that you realize just how awful Sephiroth is. Sephiroth sucks, man, and Kefka will show you why."

"Cloud is such a shitty character. Every character in Final Fantasy VII is shit, man, you'll see when you play VI what a Final Fantasy game should be."

I still have no idea what Final Fantasy VI is about, and I've gotten it pitched at me by hundreds of people. I get it. Everybody hates Final Fantasy VII because all popular things are shit. You're such an edgy, rebellious nonconformist.

Except you're not.
You've just pointed out exactly why I hate the Final Fantasy fanbase... Because they do this for every game and for some reason, they always and I do mean always compare them to VII. It gets annoying.

The original portal was killed for me by all the fans. I played the game and it was decent but all the people claiming its the greatest game ever made and that it had some of the best jokes ever and I played it and I didn't see any of it. And the ever funny "The cake is a lie" bit wasn't even that funny to me, and whenever I hear someone say it I want to do terrible things to them.

I love the Mass Effect games and yet ever since I joined the Bioware Social Network (as a way to socialize with other fans of Ashley Williams without fear of being picked on) more and more stuff has just started to piss me off.
So many vicious debates and flamewars, they just divide into different groups depending on who you like and snipe bitterly at each other across the board. I've spent more time angrily having to defend my position on things among Mass Effect fans then on ANY OTHER FORUM.

To be fair though, they aren't all bad and in places I find some great people who are fun to talk to, so I guess that's enough to justify why the fanbase hasn't totally turned me off Mass Effect games yet.
I tell you, I liked Ashley so much more than Kaiden, and it sucks, cause I'm a girl and I like to play as girls. It would be interesting to learn more about your Mass Effect opinions. I try not to get flamey about it, I promise.

OP - Can't say I really have run into a game like that, but I honestly don't play a lot of games online. I've become less pleased with games and game series over time, but never because of the rest of the fans.

I do agree that Final Fantasy VI fans are often too much this way.

I personally like VI better than VII myself. And I can see where they are coming from. But it still annoys the heck out of me how far they take it.

For the record, Sephiroth has much better characterization than Kefka.

Reading the responses in this thread, it's little wonder that gamers are still subject to stigma.

If someone loves a game, let them. If someone bugs you online, mute them. If someone acts stuck up about what games they like, ignore them. Pick your battles people. This shit isn't worth the hate.

Halo: Reach. Game is great, possibly one of the best Halo games to date (second maybe to ODST), but by god the multiplayer scene is shite. There's always some ragey dickhead who thinks he's god's gift to gaming, some spawncaming fucktard(s)or someone exploiting a map glitch somewhere.

Gah.
There are multiple things wrong here

1. if someone's annoying, mute them
2. spawncamping is a strategy, and if given the opportunity you'd spawn trap too, you wouldn't back off to give the opponent the chance to gain map control
3. The only map glitch known in the game was taken off the playlists months ago
4. In terms of competitiveness Halo: Reach is actually the worst of all the Halo's. The DMR Bloom adds a random element to the game that rewards the unskilled if they spam and get lucky and it slows down the killtimes and gameplay

anime in general. the very reason i hate anime is because i used to be into it when i was waaaaaaaaaay younger. i was made fun of for it, and once i grew up, grew a pair, and realized what was wrong with anime; literally everyone else who was into it (or everyone most people noticed) were otakus, and even comic book nerds and geeks resent them, and thats sad.

World of Warcrap. I tried it out back in like grade 10, but didn't really care for it too much so I dismissed it. But by grade 11 pretty much everyone in my whole school played it and they TROLLED me for not liking it.

Back then I didn't know to "not feed the trolls" so it just got worse and worse. I'd have people walking past me in the hallways going "WoW has the best graphics out of every game ever", etc, etc.

Eventually I wrote a three verse song and a 6800-word essay filled with research and facts about why WoW was one of the worst games ever. And I printed copies and handed it out to people. Believe it or not it actually shut them up.

But yeah. I hate WoW and its fanatics.

This isn't exactly a place to disagree on such things. But Eastern animation has a huge variety of fans. And that sounds about as stereotyping and closed minded as anime fans who say they hate cartoons. Of course this thread is going to be off, but honestly I do have to take a bit of issue with that statement. The Western comic and animation fans that resent anime are often the type who are elitists for those Western things. No matter what anyone would say, it's not less geeky to be a fan of Deadpool than Revy.

Both Eastern and Western animation have great works and great fans. And I hate how animation is being polarized by people such as yourself.

And the people who made fun of you for it were closed minded fools.

Actually... this topic is about games. Why are you talking about anime here?

Know what's bad? I have a freaking Kingdom Hearts avatar and I can't stand the fans of the series. I don't mean the ones who just play the games and generally think they are fun, I mean the ones that never shut up about the story, spam news about the newest game, pair up every single character and write an entire essay every time a new armor boss is announced (this gets really bad since every armor is apparently foreshadowing of the next game) while yelling, "Got it Memorized?"
EDIT: I still love the games and get excited whenever a new one comes out but me admitting that gets me flamed almost everywhere because the general populace can't tell the normal fans from the vocal minority that ruins the perception of a very fun series.

I'll have to support your Halo comment, on grounds that I am a person who felt unable to pursue it because of the fans. I also find that Soul Calibur lost its appeal after 3, because 3 had extra stuff for more replay value and 4 is JUST a fighting game...
