i dont know if anyone's mentioned this yet but..

REGENERATING HEALTH!

which is completely bullcrap, and is now almost EVERYWHERE in a game -_-"
I think Far Cry 2 did health pretty good. It mixed regenerating health with a health bar.
hmm, i think farcry2 did have those stimpak thingy stuff iirc. i didnt play the game that long due to the endless repetition and broken gameplay and system, so for me its not worth remembering lol

btw, thats why i said 'almost everywhere'. but thanks for reminding me :)

added note : why i hate regen health. getting wounded till youre critical and then hide in cover and wait awhile and then magically getting healthy again, is just illogical in any way, and for me is considered a cheat. i miss the old FPS's

Dialogue system in Dragon Age 2 if I pick something recent (and no, I don't wanna cause any flamewar). I was so ready to buy the game and enjoy it. Until I saw that abomination.
imo, compared to origins. the whole DA2 is an abomination :(
(no flaming intended as well)

The fucking pope in Medieval 2: Total war.

THAT FUCKING POPE

He is the sole reason I always keep an assassin stationed right outside Rome waiting to pull an Ezio. It's so insanely frustrating to be fighting a defensive war against a fellow catholic when suddenly bam, excommunication, and you have 6 crusader armies heading for your capitol.

Roman constantly calling you up in GTA4 was pretty annoying sometimes, but you could turn it off, and it wasn't a game breaker for me, but i've seen a hell of a lot of people ***** about it in these forums.
Hold the phone, you could WHAT?!? I... I never knew... ( ._.)
Yep, there is an option in the phone or something to turn it off. It also turns off all the missions thy start with a phone call but still.. NO BOWLING!

mass effect 1 when it had issue's w/ nvidia driver's and took, what? 8 months to fix? LONG after nvidia went "well, we can only do so much on out end." did end up finishing it, after finding the box in my desk after a year or so.

plenty of games that coulden't be finished due to game bugs that completely blocked you, including codbo, ac2's story broke the entire series for me, it was that stupid. (bandwagon much ubi? i've seen you do better, son i'm dissapoint. :| )

roms (gba's and snes/ness) emulator and/or rom bug deleting my saves.

a bunch of games designed specifically for a very small target audiance, and not-being one of them, and the game ends up being shit and you have no clue wtf is going on.

there's proly more, but i think thats fine for now :p

Dragon Age: Origins: combat was too oriented on one point, so i kept dying in half a minute, even with stealth, healing and high-powered equipment. this also meant my allies kept taking all the kills, and i never levelled up.
Then you're doing it wrong because the party recieves experience, not who gets the kill.

My biggest one was Fable 2 when my dog disappeared after 5 hours. Then he reappeared only to get shot. That broke it for me.

Also some guy said the monster rush in Majesty, same.

Halo: Reach, framerate issues in a console exclusive, how the hell do you allow that? HOW the HELL do you allow that?
I've only had those a few times, and they were at least justified (there were enough people blowing me up that I was sure that everyone had thrown two grenades at me).
keep in mind this was just local co-op,

S.T.A.L.K.E.R - probably seems unfair because they aren't super perfect, but everything else about their games are.

1. The ever-shrinking game world per sequel; the zone just doesn't seem nearly as threatening when there's less of it to die in. The first one you felt that - "This is a big scary wilderness, I could get lost here, fuck.". In the last one: "Meh, that's it? this is like shorter than the walk down to my bus-stop!"

2. Becoming less terrifying: in 1- the bloodsuckers are mostly invisible, in 3 - they are TOTALLY invisible, and for some reason, they are less scarier than the first - because the panic you feel from being able to just barely SEE one coming at you makes you shit your pants just that much more. Same can be said with a lot of other things - for some reason the first one had the best atmosphere - where the sequels either were too pleasant, or just lacked the grittiness of the first.

3. Nigh-invulnerable creatures: seriously- emptying 6 assault rifle clips to kill one monster? If you want to make it difficult, make them move faster, be less predictable, have more special attacks and maneuvers. Not give them 6 inches of plate armor.

4. Poorly scripted AI and events: ZP mentioned this - being asked to do a mission, and then moments later, find the friendly neighborhood have just done it for you pro-bono. Getting missions where for some reason- your target happens to have travelled into a place you aren't allowed to fire your gun (and he decides to live there... forever) - and then of course the village is after you pitchforks n all after you shoot him out of impatience in waiting for him to wander outside the city walls or something.

Otherwise a fantastic series :D
I'm currently working on finishing Shadow of Chernobyl. My biggest problem is how much damage you take from a single shot. It's all random. You could endure 15 shots point blank from an assualt rifle, and then later get taken down by a single graze with a Makarov. I love the game, but it's a little deppressing when I have to load the same save file 10 times in a row after killing 13 out of 14 enemies. Of course, I'm a noob, so maybe I'm doing it wrong.
If you haven't yet, check out the massive modding community - they'll have a mod for EVERYTHING - from ones that retexture everything to be darker and scarier or brighter and more pleasant, to ones that rescript the AI to be more difficult/rebalanced, carry more inventory, etc etc; and believe me when I say, there's nothing to lose (that being said, make sure you backup the files that are going to be changed :p)

Mind you, the difficulty level dictates the number of times a headshot will be attempted on you - and thus, yes- sometimes out of the 10-20 bullets fired at you, for some reason ONE of those bullets is going to halve your health or worse. Also be mindful of bleeding and radiation- you'd be surprised how quickly these things take down your hp- and you'd never know too until it's too late.

Also - learn which key is the quick-key to use a bandage or medikit - it's actually a bit of a game-breaker being able to spam health-kits Diablo style potion-quaffing, because all you need to do is make a few quick taps of that key to replenish that health real fast. That way, that last guy shooting you from far far away won't pick you off after you're on your last tiny bar of health.

Think about what weapon you're using as well- if you can find a Viper 5 in good condition, hang onto it- ammunition for this gun is EVERYWHERE, the reload speed is stupidly fast, the fire-rate is also stupidly fast, and worried about it being too weak? - if you spray it in the general direction of an enemy, it is bound to disrupt their aim/attack, and if you spray it a little closer to their shoulders/head - you are almost guaranteed a few headshots in that clip of 30 rounds (you can FINISH the game with this gun).

The combat in Prince of Persia;sands of time. Horrible.

And they'd make you do it usually just before you can save your progress, so once you've gotten to that part you'll just have to go through with it, and when you eventually kill all the enemies and save your game you'll abandon the game for a week or so, annoyed at it. Or I did, at least.

Every game-session ending in shit made my whole experience playing the game worse.

Thanks for the tips! I'm not sure it's going to save me, but maybe I'll be able to get through a fight without dying 10 times now.

Also, I'm going to go check on the mod db, only problem is that most of the links seem to be broken (DAMN YOU FILE PLANET!!!!)...

Giants - Citizen Kabuto got frustrating in the last chapter when using adrenaline moves started requiring fighting game like button combos. And you couldn't practice them either - you needed to use them right after playing through half the map without saving.
After playing the beginning of the level for about ten times, I yet again thanked the internet for video playthroughs saving me from further frustration.

IVAN is such a spectacularly nice game, it makes me sad it is impossible by design. Not only do the monsters level with you and your armor but faster, defeating the boss has ever succeeded only with exploits, which the designer is spesifically fixing every time he finds one.
If someone hacked the game to be reasonable, it would be a great game indeed.

Red Alert, second indoor mission for soviet union. Only once I have seen an obsessive fanatic beat it, and even he never wants to do it again.

Bad Blood's final stage was a sewer maze with switch puzzles and respawning enemies. Unacceptable by any standards.

Whenever I think about something like that, I blame it on futuristic countermeasures being too efficient for the technology in question to be practical. Works similiarly for firearms and automatic turrets too.

Mine:

Total Wars auto resolve - on Shogun 2 played a castle seige mission my force was 1500 against 2000 and I won killing 1600 at a loss of 52 of my own. Game crashed and reloaded. Auto resolved it an lost 1400 of mine dead to 900 enemies. Auto resolve is lazy but still....

NPC not using machine guns as machine guns - its like, dude you see that massive group of enemies bunched up over there? You don't need to carefully line up shots on each guy as you have a damn machine gun. Did an experiment in ARMA2. Landed black hawk against 5 militia squads bunch up on takistans runway. Me - killed em all by sweeping that 4000 rounds a minute beauty up and down the enemy line. NPC - killed about 5 by firing precise 10 round bursts at individual guys before being shot.

Final one - New games on disk requiring steam. I hate steam as its a massive resource hog, takes 3 hours to load and is ridicously unstable. So why do half the new games that I buy on didk force me to register and play them through steam? I choose to buy disked games for a very damn good reason

Poorly implemented ragdoll physics.

Take the PS2 Transformers game. Here you have Optimus Prime, strongest of the 3 selectable Autobots. 100+ tons of robot might, and he can't navigate a ledge that's no higher than his toe without him crumpling up into a pile of scrap.

I have a few.

-Dead Rising- Save system sucks

-Half-Life 2 (Xbox 360)- Controlls suck

-Half-Life (PC)- Got stuck in a glitch that insta kills me every time I spawn.

-Sonic Adventure DX on Steam- Same as leet_x1337

-Crazy Taxi- No infinite time mode

-Fable 3- When being a good guy gives you a bad ending, then you know the game sucks.

-Super Mario Bros. 2- I played this piece of garbage for 5 minutes and I never played again.

Any time teammates fuck you over. This can be in FPSes where friendly fire is on and someone decides to smear your team all over the pavement with the rocket launcher, or in an RPG where someone failed their Fireball roll and it killed everyone around him, it can even manifest in EVE Online where one dick literally hacks the CEO's alt account to give himself access to everything.

Or if you want it the classic way, when in MMORPG's party members won't stop Leeroying those mobs you specifically told them to STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM.
