What do you guys think has the best game story over the span of a series of games? I am talking the likes of Prince of Persia and Legacy of Kain games...

My personal preference is Legacy of Kain, and I am well biased on this. Followed it from Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on the PSX way back when and got hooked since... Crystal Dynamics et al made a damn good job of making a story that hooked you in...

Even the people that only touched Legacy of Kain on the ps2, Xbox got hooked and the culmination in Defiance, which, granted the game was really bad, was awesome story-wise, and did a damn good job of filling in all the blanks...

Anyone got something better?

if it has to be from a series of games, I'm going to have to say Diablo. I really liked the story of the original Diablo, and I liked the direction they went in Diablo 2 and its expansion.

Whether Diablo 3 will hold a candle to those masterpieces, has yet to be seen, but from what I've seen, I see no reason why they can't pull it off.

Meh, I dont know about Diablo 3... the problem most people are gonna have is 'OMG Diablo and Diablo 2 were feckin orrrrrrsum!!! they rockz!!!'

D3 has the potential to not be nearly as story-hooky as the first two, but when you consider that D3 is gonna be well designed graphically etc etc, I could quite willingly trade a bit of lacking in the story in order to be blown away by just how good the gameplay will be...

And that was blown AWAY

not BLOWN

LOLOL

I actually found it quite easy... the only one I even slightly struggled to fit in was LoK:BO2

took part in a weird part of time and...

ok...

Annoying thing about games that REALLY pisses me off...

wtf is it all about where you.. ok take Blood Omen and Blood Omen 2 as prime examples...

at the end of Blood Omen, you had loads of awesome weapons (I loved the two axes), different armours, different forms (mist, wolf etc) yet at the start of Blood Omen , Kain was as weak as a wet paper bag...

why oh why is it in a game sequel few game designers allow continuity of skills from one game to another?

Tangent I know... some shit pisses Me off though

I'm going to be the predictable one who says the Half Life series:

Half Life
Opposing Forces
Blue Shift
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
Portal

Each of these games has created for me not the deepest game story but the one I find most tangible. After playing 4 characters in this world and seeing so much of it I love the series. And the vague hints at the plots.

I want Opposing Forces 2! What ever happened to Corporal Shepherd?

i liked warcraft. granted they started off generic but by the time 3 got around it was happy. WoW does not count as it is a parody. or an MMO, same thing really.

The Elder Scrolls of course. What other game has literally hundreds of unique books written, many of which are fiction even within the game world!

series of games? I will have to say:
Dark Forces
Jedi Knight
Jedi Outcast
(and partly Jedi Academy, but Kyle is not the lead character).

Knights of the Old Republic was a good series as well.

Starcraft is very good as well (don't know if brood war counts as part of a series, otherwise we will have to wait and see how starcraft II goes story wise)

I find the story of kane and tiburium in command and conquer to be really interesting. It's really creepy how they keep making in seem like kane is the kane from the bible story cain and abel.

Planescape Torment : Although, it's mainly a massive collection of well written 'choose your own adventure' quest type dialogues, the underlining plot of an amnesic, massively scarred & tattooed immortal trying to die to reach his final death and get back his memories is just awesome :D

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura : You start off in a blimp crash, a man approaches you, he claims you are the 'Living One'. Off you go! Arcanum is set in a fantasy cum steampunk world just after an industrial revolution, the orcs are factory slave labour, the gnomes bankers & statesmen, the ogres hulking gnome bodyguards, and the elves distrustful and reclusive at best, xenophobic and destructive at worst. As for the Dwarves? Well, after having one of their finest inventions stolen by someone they trusted, they've locked themselves into their mountains. The plot follows you as you attempt to uncover the disappearance of a prominent Dwarven Clan. True, gameplay is a bit off, and the game is buggy as nothing else, but the world, and story I found to be utterly gripping.

Diablo 1 and 2 were great, though the D3 story could go somewhere else like say Diablos son tries to free him and corrupt the heroes. So many games with so many predictable stories around now days.

BO2 is basically not canon. It was created with a different crew from the rest of the series and if memory serves me correctly the original story writer was not involved in it so ya. Save yourself alot of time and hassle and just see it for what it was. A shitty little attempt to milk the name of Kain and just write it off.
Of course, the fact that Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance were also a bag of shit remains. The story writers might have cared about the product and had some investment in the world, but the people actually making the games sure as hell didn't, leading to shallow mechanics and poor environment design.

It's best, really, to pretend they never made any more after the first Soul Reaver game.

Weren't all the Prime Evils killed though in D2? And then Baal in the Expansion, although as far as I remember, I can only recall smashing Mephisto's soul stone. But I was pretty sure Diablo himself was also destroyed, and certainly not liable to be 'freed' from anywhere.

Hmm, my money is on some of the Lesser Evils taking advantage of the power vacumn left by the lack of the Prime Evils. Andariel and Duriel are of course gone though. So, that probably leaves Asmodan and Belial.

One of the best story concept overall has to be found in the 'Thief' games (Granted, I don´t think it was planned like this in the beginning).
Not only did Looking Glass Studios create a gaming universe filled with lot of lore and uniqueness, they also invented three fractions, one of each as the centre axis in one of the games(Dark Project - Pagans, Metal Age - Hammerites, Deadly Shadows - Keeper)
And even though fans didn´t apprechiate 'Deadly Shadows', I think it has one of the most twisted, elaborate and rewarding storylines in a game so far (and one of the scariest levels of all time).

GothmogII, you´re absolutely right! Planescape Torment is everything a good game has to offer.

LoK is great as well!

Hmm... I wonder why nobody has mentioned 'Baldur´s Gate', yet...
