Yea, that stereotype is complete BS. I don't know one single gamer who fits it at all.

For example, I'm 5'11", 195lbs of pure muscle, have a corporate job, and own a rental business. In addition to gaming, I work out 5 days a week, play Bass, rock climb, hike, camp, play paintball and ride motorcycles. So, as you can see, I own my own place, and you could never call me fat, nor lazy... although 90% of my girlfriends would argue that when it comes to housework ;) I'm a pretty serious gamer too, I don't only game on the PC and console, I've played just about every pen and paper RPG out there and only stopped because all my buddies who I played with moved away. Hell, I've owned just about every console that has come out since the atari 2600.

The only friend of mine who is both fat and lazy friend can barely be called a gamer. He does own a 360 but plays every single game on the easy setting and still gets his ass handed to him. My theory is that he is too lazy to challenge himself in anything, including gaming.

The stereotype of a gamer is we are fat, lazy, we live in a basement with foam swords and a castle, and can always end up embarrassing ourselves. But I want to know is this true do some gamers really do this or is it just a false stereotype?
actually sad as this is going to be, that fits a couple of guys I know, they are avid D&D players and they also are really into the LARP game Ampgard.
As for myself, lets do the rundown
fat-nope, somewhere between 5'8 and 5'11 I would say and 155. I alternate between running 20-30 minutes and weight training for an hour every day.
Lazy-well there is the workout routine I just talked about, which I do completely of my own volition, I do a decent amount of yardwork, and I help my friends move furniture and other such stuff.
Basement-well other than the weights and the treadmill being in the basement (gets very cold around my area, even sometimes during the summer) I don't spend much time down there.
foam swords and castles-I would love to own a real sword, don't have any foam swords. Used to do ampgard, but stopped having fun with it and wasn't worth looking stupid if I wasn't enjoying the activity, quite about 2 years ago. Now I do SCA, which is with wooden ratan swords, or live blunted steel.
embarrassment-well I hardly ever talk much, and I am choose my words very carefully. I generally try to avoid situations were embarrassment could happen altogether.

I have a really fast metabolism so I've never been fat, I'm extremely lazy, the aquifer makes it impossible for me to have a basement, no foam swords, and a (presumably) cardboard box castle sounds awesome.

Dude you've gotta post pictures if you are making a claim about "every console".

How is the Sega Nomad?
Note the "Just About" ;)

Never had a Nomad, never had a Neo Geo either. Until the PS1 I had to afford all these systems on a part time job while going to school, so I definitely missed a few but I had enough that people used to walk in my room and stare with awe...mind you, part of that was the jury rigged stereo that was the size of a small fridge, tv tube out of the case put in a cage built from my old erector set, and the other salvaged electronics without cases laying around my room.

From memory (and just consoles, not computers nor handhelds) I've had, Atari 2600, Colecovision, NES, Sega (that's all it was called that I'm aware of, you either had a Nintendo or a Sega when I was a kid, I had both after mowing LOTS of lawns :p ), SNES, Genesis + CD + 32X, Saturn, Playstation, N64, Jaguar, Dreamcast, PS2, gamecube, Xbox, Wii (which I've since sold and vowed to never buy Nintendo kiddy crap again), Xbox360...

Oddly, I don't have a PS3 yet. I've just been putting off getting one because 99% of games come out for both the 360 and PS3 but I'm going to get one soon, if only to play Blu-Ray disks.

It's actually the basement bit that confuses me the most. Storing £1000+ of computer equipment and assorted geek paraphernalia in the basement is an invitation to be £1000+ out of pocket the next time there's a flood. Edit: and that's without considering that some of the stuff might be irreplaceable or nearly so.

the only aspect of the stereotype I match up with is the laziness part. I've spoiled myself to the point only to where I have no choice but to staple my behind to the nearest chair and A) fiddle with my guitar B) stare and occasionally laugh at my computer screen or C) Do anything besides what I was told to do. I'm even procrastinating as I type. Other than that I'm just a bit on the chunky side.

I'm pretty much the skinny know-it-all gamer geek stereotype
I wear glasses when I'm watching TV or playing games, and I occasionally find myself accidentally saying 'noob' and 'pwnd' to people who have no idea what I'm talking about

But I'm not completely antisocial, so that's ok

I think there's a reason for the stereotype. A random gamer is more likely to be a fat, antisocial basement dweller then a random jock. But a random jock is more likely to be an arrogant, air headed douche. Cliques are not a straight jacket for behavior, and you should never assume that, but generally there is a source of the stereotype.

Fat...Well bad meds but I dropped 9 pounds and am on my way down.

Lazy...Medical condition but I run a corporation and am getting better and doing things.

Bathing issues...Crap i fit the damn stereotype. (same condition as lazy. And I seriously have a condition I am not making that up as others do)

Basement...Ha thankyou I don't.

Swords...I don't have swords ether. Though I am looking at some replicas which look sweet but as quite expensive. Am I allowed to post a link for that as I know we are not allowed to outsourse things but I don't know if that fits the rule or not. I will air on the side of contion on this.

Castle...Does corporate fallout bunker count as a castle. Man I wish I had one of those it would be sooooo sweet. LOL. Well when i get richer.

If you build it nerds will come.

Are you serious?

Yes. And keep it under a billion its all I got...On me. Ah ha ha ha.
BenchWarmers.

Fat: No, I'm actually quite thin.

Live in Basement: No, I have my own room and I don't even have a basement.

Foam swords and castle: I had foam swords and a castle..........when I was 3 years old.

Embarrasing myself: Absolutely not, in fact, I'm actually quite popular for being a gaming expert.

Is this a bad joke? I mean, it's bad. But it's a joke, right?
Nope.

Last time I checked I played Bass, sung in a choir, and was on the basketball team. Also; I plunk at least 10 hours a week on games.
A chior? I don't understand.
A choir. Check your spelling, buddy. A group of more than 5 people singing together (5 people is quintet, 4 a quartet, 3 a trio, 2 a duo/duet).

Y'know, making a 360 version is probably the best move Sqeenix ever made. This guy is obviously in his mother's house, he has a wine glass full of MILK.
