In my mind, ALL camping is fine except for spawn camping. I mean, even weapon camping. The logic seems to go like this:

"I do not accept that you have the superior weaponry, as this means I have to rely on my own talent!"

I mean, I've never had a problem with anyone camping anything, it's always too easy to kill someone who stays in the same place constantly. Only very unbalanced games have a single place where you can effectively camp without a single countermeasure being available to the other team/players.

However, I can recount a particularly absurd story of being called a camper. It was on Halo: Combat Evolved, on the Battle Creek map, which is tiny. Seriously, it's the smallest map based on teamwork I've ever played on any multiplayer game. And this was with sixteen players, eight on each side, and everyone spawns with rockets. And one guy runs into our base through the main entrance, which branches to the left and the right. I had been waiting fairly close by, snce the other team kept firing rockets through the main door, and I needed a chance to get out. This enemy who runs in turns right instead of left, bypassing me completely, and letting me put a rocket in his back, to which he responds by calling me a camper.

On a tiny map, with sixteen players, each with a rocket launcher, where standing still generally means instant death. Later on this guy claimed someone else was camping, before quitting.

Gamer code of ethics? There is no such thing, in gaming the only thing that matters is the win, unless you have some other reason for making other rules like honor or you run a gaming store. I would also like to point out that the reason soldiers have ethics is because if they didn't that would lead to barbarism and, perhaps more importantly, not following orders.

You're a fun, light-hearted person, aren't you?

i think it really boils down to one golden rule.

Everything you can get away with is permitted.

Camping? permitted
Being a 12 year old racist? Permitted

and...

Hunting down that camping son of a ***** religiously to wipe his ass out so often he cries? permitted
Muting or simply telling the kid insulting your mother to suck a corpses dick? permitted

In this way, all wrongs are beaten down by the over-morals of the group, campers are destroyed while true snipers excel, 12 year olds learn to shut up or be shot down, its natural selection.

Permit everything, including your reaction... and no code of ethics is required. there will always be assholes... but there will also be those with the power to ventilate their skull or infuriate them in conversation.

6. Never kill a teammate.
Change that to "...unless you have a very good reason"

For example: i was in a halo 2 match when one guy on my team got a plasma stuck on him. I saw 3 enemies behind him and he didn't seem to be aware of it. So i shot him with a rocketlauncher, sending him all the way across the room where the grenade exploded, killing 2 of the 3 guys there.

And then there's the numerous "human cannonball" events in garry's mod.

Thou shalt not rant about racism against the Japanese in an extremely annoying voice for almost an hour while everyone else plays a match.
Someone actually did this in TF2 the other day :(

Good point with the spamming invites, people do that too much.

Camping is acceptable when you're sniping, I.E. enemy base with a couple of cliffs on each side made for sniping, awesome view into the base, camp as long as you want, pretty soon somebody's gonna get out and/or snipe you back

Camping isn't good when your just standing there with a shotgun waiting for someone to spawn, you have to give them a chance to run

Of course next time they spawn there they will know where you are and kill you before the half second spawn invincibility wears off

Personaly counter sniping is one of my favorite things to do, along with taking pot shots at people on motorcycles or turrets

If your drunk don't play on open/random matches. No one wants to hear you bragging nonsense while tking half your team because you're just in the mood. (Also be careful what you talk about when drunk. I once let myself go while playing squiffy, leading to me raging on and on about my racial belief system. Follow my advice: DON'T! Whatever you believe in no one else wants to hear it. )
So long

The number one rule is to have fun. Why else do we play? We are not making any money, in fact it costs us money.

Number two rule is to be friendly. I'm not saying you can't teebag after a particularly good kill, but screaming cusses and racial slurs just shows how far down the food chain you really are. Don't get me wrong, If my online friend pulls of the most impossible sniper shot from all the way across the map while I am in the middle of a smoke grenade, I will call him a Fucktard, but it is not meant to be hurtful, and I would only say something like that to someone I have played with before.

Number three, help people out. For example, I was in an online game of Unreal Tournament 3 last night and my whole team was made up of guys who had never played with vehicles. They were trying out the different vehicles and not really playing concentrating on the match. So I shared what some of the best vehicles are and how to use them (some of the vehicles need instruction). I helped them, we had fun... and we lost horribly, but it is just a game and maybe those guys will be more useful to the next guy they team up with.

I have to say that last nights gaming was some of the best I have had in a while. There were no screaming idiots. The teams actually used thier mics correctly. My teams were typically helpful. And I had fun. And yes, I was playing with some younger guys in a couple of games, and they were pretty cool.

If you have a high-pitched voice DO NOT TALK ON A MICROPHONE. Honestly, it has to be the most annoying thing on this earth, short of people actually thinking Dane Cook is funny.

Also, when someone beats you in Call of Duty 4 with a shotgun on one of those really big maps that everybody assumes is for sniping only, don't whine that they're hacking or glitching or some other pathetic excuse for why you lost. Just accept the fact that they beat you with a shotgun on a level everyone thinks is for nothing but long range weapons. That means they are really good with the shotgun. Promise. Thats why it's the only gun they have that has the golden finish (apart from the Desert Eagle, but they give that one to you for free).

Also, don't call a person a 'fag' or '******' or 'gay' because they beat you. Just because that person won does not mean he likes it from behind. It means he's better than you....or he got really lucky that one particular match. Either way, accept it and try to beat him in the next match.

And camping is unacceptable in any way, shape, or form. Period.
wait... so you can be left alone for using that shotgun...

but me and my sniper rifle are 'unacceptable'?

My ethic: Don't go blaming the toolbox, every possible strategy and weapon in a game is fair, if your getting killed alot then perhaps you should change... not your opponent.
I meant no camping except for sniping. I went back and edited my previous post for that. Because it generally takes some skill to be able to win by doing nothing but sniping. Hitting those tiny moving targets is too tough for me, thats why I stick to the shotgun, which can still be very hard to use and win with without switching to a rifle every now and again, since you have to pretty much just bum-rush the guy to get close enough for the bleeding thing to actually do damage.

  • You will not cheat in any way to forward the single player plot is bad. Cheating for comical effect (such as most of the cheats in GTA) is acceptable.

You will not cheat in multiplayer unless all opponents have access to the same cheats.

You will not spam voice with pointless crap. Meaningful conversation is acceptable but should always be interrupted by tactical coms.

    You will worship Will Wright.

You will accept people of all sexes, colours and creeds play videogames.

You will not instakill a newb unless he or she is likely to kill you from his or her antics. This also applies to members of your own team.

You will not buy a new Battlefield game without admitting first that you are essentially paying full price for an expansion pack of BF2. Exceptions: Any game pre-BF2.

You will not buy games developed and produced by EA without admitting first that you are encouraging countless sequels and addon packs.

    You will worship Valve.

You will speak a real language online. Dead languages are acceptable, as they were once real.

You will not play music down voice coms, especially hard dance. If I wanted to listen to a chav masturbate into a subwoofer I'd live in surrey. For other types of music, more acceptable but also distracting so leave it out. (Note this is not a rant about Hard Dance but only once have I heard music spam that isn't of that variety.)

    You will respect admins wishes.

You will give all games a chance if asked. Even those you really do not want to play.

You will play a game before giving an opinion of it.

These pretty much sum up my code of conduct. They match the personal rules of most people I know as well.

- No constant mic... nobody needs a running commentary of the game. They can see, and if they can't then they should be playing...

-No mic if you are squeaky, please...

-No tryingto be a DJ and blaring music down your mic.. You are not a DJ and not everyone shares your love of Indie rock. If we wish for music, we have our own means of obtaining it...

-Swearing doesn't equal cool... bonus points deducted for high pitched voice while engaging in said swearing

-Don't harass hot avatars in mmorpg about if they are really a girl. Additionally, if you find she is, it is NOT cool to ask about her hotness or receptiveness to mic cyber sex... From a girl, let me say, this is defiantly un-fun.

If on a RTS, Don't let enemies walk through your base to mine unless you have a death wish.
Also don't "garrison your troops" my base without my say-so and go ahead, I'll destroy your base for that.

Resource hoarders share your resources. If i have more of something than other teammates i give them that resource if they need it. Sharing saves lives.

Don't leave just because the enemy has broken your outer defense and my army is on it's way. It's just a waste of time to respond to you then.

FPS.
When i snipe, i find a good vantage point and kill one enemy and move one to a different point. I personally let people spawn and find different targets like the warthog driver so the guy with the rocket can shoot at him easier.

Don't kill the AFK's

Teamkilling is wrong unless they tell you to(sticky so the can suicide rush)

No quitting an online lobby when you only need one more person to start the game.

No cheating in multiplayer.

Auto Aim is for pussies.

Teabagging is only acceptable after a particularly important kill - ending a spree, killing your friend/rival, etc.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
To add to that.

If you are around the age of 9 on Xbox Live, that's okay. The industry needs new gamers. However, please, turn your headset off.
I agree. One must first come of age/earn the right to use the headset. It is a great and revered responsibility, not to be entrusted to those not yet deemed worthy.

One of the most fun things is being completely civil to someone who's being a mouth-foaming freak. Give them props when they do well, cheerfully suggest ways they could improve, but just be 100% civil. It FREAKS PEOPLE OUT.
