gamers are no different than non-gamers when it comes to taste in music. although the gamers are more likely to favor video game music for obvious reasons.

Maybe because a lot of music gamers like is video game music, and to a large percentage of the ignorant, pompous; stuck up, snooty; pretentious people who listen to "real music" from "real composers", video game music is just a bunch of "bleeps and bloops". I'm always the first to call bullshit on this and slap those people in the face, because what video game music has that bands don't have is variety. I could name you 100 awesome video game songs and every single one of them would sound completely different, wheras if you were to name the top 100 "real songs" from "real composers" I can guarantee you that about half of them or more would all sound exactly the same.

Though to be fair, with this post I may be confirming this stereotype, so take this as you will.
I believe you are putting the wrong group of songs and composers into the REAL group, my friend. Anyone in "commercial music" is mostly not considered "real" by the rest of the industry.

OT: That is so much bullocks I can almost smell it, and I just had a shower, so its not me!
Just because music sells doesn't mean it is bad.
Yes, because not all music that sells is "commercial music". ;)

next time this stereotype comes up, introduce the person to the legend of zelda ocarina of time soundtrack. if they don't like it, then they have terrible taste in music.

As you said, it's all subjective, it all comes down to individual taste, so there is no answer to your question.
Yup taste is subjective, but there is a technical level in music that can either be matched or not matched.
Technical doesn't necessarily equal good, though.

You can play arpeggios and scales for ten minutes and get some people to call you epic. I'd rather have some Hendrix than Dragonforce, though. Even if Hendrix is considered more technically "simplistic." Or Queen, since Brian May knew not only when to shred, but when not to.

Anyway, considering most of my gamer friends are Japanophiles who would buy that Frog Song if it was done by Japanese lolis, I have trouble arguing the stereotype is completely baseless. Not that Japanese music is bad, but buying bad songs because they're Japanese is bad taste.

I think I have way better taste than my other friends. Simply because all they listen to is dubstep.

Do you believe this stereotype is true? Not true? Why?

Would you like to add examples to the contrary?

I for one don't believe it is true. I've seen gamers with good taste in music and bad taste in music. But it is all subjective anyway.

NOTE: Please read the OP and don't just read the title and assume I'm ignorant.
So you believe the stereotype is true because some gamers like good music and some gamers like bad music?

That's like saying humans have a terrible taste in music, because some like good music and some like bad.

I don't see gamers' taste in music differing all that much from most people, who are pretty eclectic anyway. I guess gamers are more likely to like game sound track music? I like quite a lot of that, so I'd see that as good taste anyway.

Not that it really matters, taste in music is about as frickin' subjective as it gets.

Most people on this site listen to metal and/or jpop/anime songs. (Weird combination, but whatever).

I don't like (read: absolutely despise) either genre very much , but to each their own.

Yes, but that doesn't effect whether it's enjoyable or not enjoyable to certain people.

It's not possible to have terrible taste in music, because if it exists, that means someone likes it, and that validates its existence.

Damn it's refreshing hearing someone acknowledge dubstep without saying it's amazing xD

Dubstep to me is just like "Electro for dummies", a popularized introduction into electronic music.

I think this because it's often a persons first deviation from their first genre be it metal or rap. And then you get idiots on Youtube calling everything that isn't metal or rap "dubstep". Hell I saw someone refer to a chiptune as dubstep the other day.

no, because, being a gamer, I like the music I'm into. Sure you hear a lot of that techno shit being rammed down microphones over xbox live but there's nothing like sniping in Bad Company 2 with Led Zeppelin in the background.

And just because it isn't popular amongst the gaming community/you haven't heard of it before, doesn't mean it is any less of a stereotype.
So you've basically made something up and called it a stereotype to justify asking about it?

Well done you.
Nope. It is talked about frequently on numerous music boards and blogs.

There is no need to keep going on about this. You'll never admit that it is a "real" stereotype and I'll never admit it isn't, so let's stop here shall we?
You keep saying this but provide no links/proof. I feel like you're making it up for the sake of 'discussion'.

Also, in response to your post that was a post below this one. No just because something sells well, doesn't make it bad. But some really shitty music can sell really well. See: Train. That group is an abomination. In every sense of the word, but they are/were/hell I don't know, stupid popular.

How... does being a gamer have any effect on your taste of music.

That's sort of like saying, "people who eat cheetos don't know what a good movie is"

What idiot started this stereotype?

I don't know what they mean by "bad taste" as I said in my OP (which I asked everyone to read) I disagree with this stereotype.
Right I read that, and I was never implying that you did agree with them. It's just for the discussion value of the thread we need a little more than being told there are people who think gamers have a bad taste in music. Without it your OP is really not much more than an inner musing which you seem to have already resolved for yourself.

The phrase "bad taste in music" is kinda vague and a really subjective one. If you want us to discuss at length what we think of that then we need to know what the opposing side of the argument considers "bad taste in music". Even some links to the music communities you're talking about would be helpful as it would at least allow us to infer what they might mean by it.

Yeah, and even when I show them some New Wave to try and broaden their horizons they just laugh at me and go listen to Skrillex. It's quite frustrating.

I'd say that "gamers" now cover such a broad spectrum of the population, can't we say that their taste in music is just as eclectic as non gamers?

I listen to Hugh Laurie's Blues.
I listen to Melodic Death Metal.
I listen to Classical (usually video game/film OSTs).

That is just me, ONE person.

Besides, as already stated, taste is subjective, but in terms of listening to what is critically deemed "good" - I'd say the answer is just as true, christ I listen to Rush (critically acclaimed) as well as... less critically acclaimed bands. (Looking at YOU Dragonforce.)
