I disagree. I have encountered someone with who subscribes to this stereotype, but the ************ liked country music. I refuse to believe someone can give me shit for liking the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack when he likes to sing along with a tune about giving booze to horses.

Besides, the only real catch is that a lot of the time the problem is simply a lack of exposure. Some gamers simply don't listen to a lot of music. They'd like if they heard it, but it's hard to pay for CDs when game prices are so high.
...and weirdly when it seems a lot of the people here listen to NPR rather than music stations.

OT: theres such a thing as taste you know If I tell some one I like internet/nerd/geek folk music (real genre look it up songs like Code monkey are in this genre ) they usally laugh and say I have bad taste then they go back to there pop music

The stereotype runs more as, "Everyone except me has terrible taste in music". Any music conversation with anyone can turn elitist. I have never heard of it specifically targeting gamer. Perhaps its because gamers are a younger demographic?

I think that beyond the fact that gamers often overlap with the "Metal is my religion and I am unwilling to listen to other music no matter how good it is because it isn't metal and therefore I hate it and it sucks" people, it's completely subjective.

Though people who only listen to game/anime soundtracks also irk me.

Basically anyone who's closed-minded about music for any reason makes me want to hit them with a stick.

But to me, A bad taste in music, isn't what you like or don't like, its how much you like.

I find Metalheads to have a bad taste in music because they for some reason find other types of music to be "inferior" and close off there music pallet. A lack of variety to me, is a the closest you can have to a bad taste in music.

Not true at all. Im a metalhead myself and I listen to all kinds of different music, from techno to ambient to experimental to video game music (even though that's not techinically a genre of music). I also know plenty of other metalheads who also have a very broad musical taste.

I do agree with your statement though. However, applying it to an entire group of people, no matter if its based on your own personal opinion, is a gross generalization.

Don't believe it has to be subjective, there are standards of course. However, gamers to have terrible taste in general is a load of crap altogether. Everyone I see answer in the music threads here are really diverse, classical and new.

Nowadays, pretty much everyone is a gamer in some capacity. My stepdad is the most computer illiterate person I know, and he still plays hearts on the computer regularly. The word "gamer" is rapidly losing its meaning, in much the same fashion that "viewer" and "listener" and "reader" have. (Television, radio, and books respectively, in case you were curious.)

So, most everyone is a gamer, therefore most everyone has terrible taste in music.

...Sure, I'll buy that.

Well I obviously certainly don't think so. My musical appreciation is extensive, and my favourite artists encompass numerous genres, eras, styles etc... Stereotypical "Gamers" generally seem to be more open to being introduced to new kinds of music. This is my experience by the vast majority. From Wipeout, to Fallout to DMC4, I discover and embrace new kinds of music all the time through games, and I know good examples of the genres and styles I am better associated with. I can discuss music intelligently and comment on individual artists strengths and weaknesses across their library.

So again, obviously, I don't agree with them.

well since i enjoy songs from nearly all genres like rock, metal, rap, pop,etc etc i cant see how my taste in music is worse than anyone elses

i like anything from blue oyster cult to disturbed to linkin park to kansas to nightwish to hilltop hoods to covers of these bands.

the main critera for me hating a song is not understanding the lyrics so that eliminates most sceamo or deathmetal or which ever it is that just growls the words out and foreign music like jap pop but even then there are exceptions.

I have a diverse taste in music, so even if someone were to say that some things I listen to don't do it for them, there is sure to be something I listen to that they like. Either way, it's certainly better than the people who refuse to listen to anything but the most offensive of rap, with so much bass that it sets of car alarms when you drive by.

while music is highly subjective, i will admit gamers generally do (this is excluding video game directed music, most of it happens to be pretty decent) have very..."odd" tastes as i will put, as in super super not mainstream, check out any of the "favorite music" threads, and you'll see what i mean
