Personally I'm not even eighteen yet, but I've been playing games since I was a young'in on the Mega Drive.

Playing video games is statistically better than sex.
And it also makes for a cheap night in, which is good 'cause I have no money to waste XD

i don't know why 30+ people even game.

there are so much greater things to do. i'm 16 and in Holland that means NO DRIVING!(we are allowed to drink though)

but not being allowed to go long distances without involving my mom or the train, really bothersome.
Uh, because gaming is a lot of fun? What, I can drive, so suddenly I should stop enjoying games? That makes no sense.
Because video games are toys, and adults shouldn't play with toys. At least, that's a view I seem to sense with many people.
What??????? Toys come in many shapes and forms and adults should be made to play!
*Activating 15 year old school girl mode. Exercise caution!* omg my lozer bother plays that hes so dumb lol. why cant he get a life or a gf
*Deactivating*

There you go. Right there. Any and all introverted tasks are essentially viewed as being necessary for people with lack of social skills, a weakness in the gestalt's eyes. It's been evolutionary ingrained into our psyches to ostracize parties who jeopardize our group's future, either through their incapability or threat to a working status quo.
Activating 43 year old mother mode exercise even more caution 'Go to your room, and stay there'!
I don't know about you, but I feel better for that, especially since I never 'send', my kids to their room ;-)

(This is the undoctored transcript of a conversation I just had.)

Bitter: Hey, I need you to prove a point.
Bitter: What are video games to you?
taylor: nothing.
Bitter: Okay.
Bitter: Would toy be a fair assessment as well?
taylor: not necessarily
Bitter: But in general?
taylor: sure
Bitter: And do you think people who play with toys past a certain stage are in some way socially incapable?
taylor: no
Bitter: So a 35 year old single male who plays video games as a hobby is in no way socially stunted?
taylor: no he is

(Mr. Taylor isn't exactly what you would call an out there person. I'd say he's pretty in line with the common line-of-thought, so tell me what you make of this.)

This. Also, from a *cough* adult financial view, games are way more bang for the buck than a trip to the movies...and I'm well *past* the age of hittin' the bars and clubs, so I find myself playing more as the urge to leave my nice warm home in the dead of winter recedes.

Oh, yeah, I get that a lot, but I stopped caring a while ago. I work very hard at my job, which means I get to spend my free time as I see fit. If that means I want to play with toys, that's my business. (Not that I consider games toys, of course, but you get my drift.)
As someone once said 'we don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.'

Anyways I'm 25 here but won't be giving up gaming just because I hit 30. I may cut down a lot due to other responsibilities but never stop completely.

More common (mis?)conceptions the general populace has: You're over 30, therefore you should be financially secure enough to go to the movies anyways, or read books, or just kind of mindlessly watch TV. Or, you should be trying to ignore your age, and cling onto your youth, still going to the clubs.

LMAO...it's a poor argument on my part anyway, considering the coin I pump into my PC rig. hehehe
As for reading...well, why wouldn't I do that as well, right? My gaming crack is narrative-driven games because I love a story that rips my guts out. Doesn't matter to me if it's on paper or my computer monitor.
I'd love to ignore my age, but I'd probably just end up breaking a hip. ;)

Who do you think makes the games? 10-year olds......although I would not be surprised.
Ten year olds make games? ZUH?!
yes they do in fact... hide and seek, tag, and pick on the fat kid, to name a few.... they may not know the technology but might get a job as a story writer.... or art, or graphics, or dialoge........ or CEO of Nintendo. Doesn't take a scientist to order people to remake a game for the 50th time.
WOO! Pick on the fat kid FTW!

As the fat kid, I approve of this sentiment!

I'm 30 and play mostly shooters but will buy some top tier RPGs like Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3.

When this question arises, I often ask people how many adults watch TV. Is it immature to prefer your media coming out of your TV to be interactive? Is it more mature to passively let the networks stream their garbage into your living room, or is it more mature to take an active role in the exchange? Is it more mature to play Mass Effect or to watch the Price is Right? People look at me like I'm insane if I question whether people my age should be watching CSI or The Biggest Loser.

So rokkolpo, that raises the question: will you stop watching TV when you turn 18?

I'm a bit over thirty. Unfortunately, unless a game really grabs me by the collar (doesn't happen as often as I'd like) I just don't find as much time to play games as I used to. Various responsibilities, possibility of child or spouse interruption, need for sleep. Mostly these days I play my DSi or flash games that I can leave at any time without too much regret. Prototype is amusing, but it hasn't really captivated me enough to really hit it hard. Looking forward to Mass Effect 2, though.

I really miss some of the good teams from games like Team Fortress Classic- when a group of people clicks in a team-based game, it's fantastic. I just don't feel I can play a game where other people will count on me for the quality of their experience any more if I might have to drop out on a moment's notice. Doing that is only half a step above griefing in my book.

Mostly my time on the computer these days is spent on my own creative projects. Which does include creating a couple of small games of my own, though.

Driving is THE WORST. With the help of portables you can game just about anywhere. School. Work. On the Bus. Church. Your sister's wedding. At bath time. During dancefights. While having sex. (Multiplayer games are best if you don't want your partner to feel left out.)

The only time you can't game is when you have to keep your eyes on the road.

Driving sucks.

You should try it on Canadian streets in December. Lesseee...risk icy motorized mangling, or stay home and squish space zombies?? Yeah...easy decision...

...now...if I can just get hubs into multiplaying....
