Half life
I seriously feel the need to reply to such a post..
In the same way ocarina of time was original when it came out and introduced some never-before seen/done mechanics and storytelling and whatnot, Half life 1 was to first person shooters a completely different take. it was the first shooter in which you could feel immersed and the game itself was unfolding the story with scenes that convinced you of the world that you tore apart when you've put that crystal in the beam.

before half life 1, shooters were all monsters, guns, ammo.. and sometimes tits (duke nukem) and any hints of story were through either the booklet that came in the box or some cheezy cutscene.
hl had scripts.. loads of'em.

trouble with half life 2 is that it stepped away from that and it was made more like show and tell instead of storygrip. + you've seen every innovative element in the trailers that just showed you the entire game before release rly..

edit: tldr: unless you could become a gamer from 1998 and have the same feeling that compelled you to awe at the exciting quality and innovation behind the memorable games that came out at the turn of the century.. OFC you don't get it.. and you never will. + most game genres are an acquired taste
Um, he's just stating his opinion (which is both allowed and valid). Remember, not everyone is going to like the things you like.

I love me some Final Fantasy, but I see that it figures in this thread on more than a few occasions. All I can say is, people's taste vary greatly. No need to be offended. Some people don't like FF. Some people (like me) don't like HL (or any FPS for that matter).

OP:
Dragon Age: Origins.
The FPS genre as a whole.
Grand Theft Auto series.
I'd like to split the FPS series into 3 parts

part 1: the "modern" FPS (Halo, CoD... anything your health comes back in seconds and the story is laughably easy)

part 2: the "story" FPS (Half-Life, Bioshock... anything that's mainly about the story itself but holds tru to YOU HAVE HEALTH)

part 3: the "classic" FPS (No real story, no regen health, just you and a ton of people to murder... good examples are DOOM 1+2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Unreal, PainKiller, TF2...)

and as you can guess in my opinion I named them worst to best

I hate halo and CoD
Bioshock and Half-Life are REALLY fun the first few times
but PainKiller, Duke Nukem, and TF2... I KEEP COMING BACK! AAAAAAAAAAH!!!

There really isn't any. If someone likes a game I make sure I find out why, even if it's something I wouldn't enjoy myself.

I didn't get why people liked Fallout 3 for quite a while. But once I got a kick start with some tips I think I found what the appeal was ^^

Mario. I really don't understand his CULT following.
A cult? I don't think you can call it that when millions of people have played it.

Anyway, i really hated ICO, i mean i really did... maybe it was because i was only 7 XD. oh yes and i can't forget elder scrolls IV: oblivion, I thought Fallout 3 was great but i never liked elder scrolls.
Just because there's a lot of fans doesn't mean it's not cult like, which is what I meant. Many Mario fans (or fans of any game for that matter) are cult like in their singleminded devotion to their object of obsession.

pretty much most, if not all, fps's. they are all the same barring one or two differences like one is on a different planet and in another you can shoot through some walls. the only major difference is the story and most of those are about as interesting to me as watching grass grow.

Goldeneye. I came to it after playing FPS games on consoles with a sensible controller and found it so awkward to control it killed the experience. Other than that it seemed like a fairly generic shooter so god know why everyone seems to go around with such a hard on for it.

No offence meant, but from the looks of that list, you just hate everything popular. I'm sure you have good reasons, but I'd at least like to hear them... also, what games do you like?

OT: I'm currently playing Half-Life 2 (will have to stop tomorrow and won't be able to resume until I come back on holiday here - reasons are annoyingly complicated). I just finished Ravenholm.

The game certainly isn't bad - fuck, it's a long way from the mire of badness. Indeed, Ravenholm was really terrifying, and the passive storytelling isn't bad - On "Water Hazard", I found myself staring up at the top of the canal from the dry, nearly water-free bottom and noticing an old water-line very near to the top. About 7 metres up. What the fuck have this "Combine" been doing to our planet? Hell, I even found the physics puzzles mildly diverting.

But having said that, the game was only on the upper end of average. The combat was very linear, the Combine cop enemies were awfully boring and lacking in variety (and stupid, to boot), and dear god... the vehicle section. It was utterly shit, completely awful, went on for so damn long... I really hated that airfanboatbike thing. Even when using it to run people over, it was horrible. Using the D-pad to switch weapons was fine and fluid when you only had a few, but when you started stocking up every weapon in the game it became tedious and annoying to have to press the D-pad multiple times to get to the Magnum or gravity gun.

And yet, there are people who treat it like the second coming of Christ, like some sort of FPS god, and treat anyone who likes a lesser FPS - say, Halo - like lesser beings. They are the worst kinds of fanboy, and this game doesn't even deserve it. It's certainly not as good as Halo.

So yeah, I think Half-Life 2 qualifies for this list.

WoW, i just found it so boring, i don't see how people can spend hours playing it, i deleted it off my system after about 15 minutes.

CoD, all my friends practically hump their copies of the game, but when i played it, it seemed to be the same as any other FPS.

The entire Gears of War series. It was a pretty game at first, but I couldn't get into the cover-based combat done by most other shooters in existence right now, like Mass Effect (which I actually love).

I'm almost mad at it because people refer to it as"G.O.W." and I assume they're talking about God of War, which I actually like.

Elder Scrolls series, I played the first 2, they were actually pretty fun, but Morrowind and Oblivion were just downright horrible.

I think it deserves "cult" status when Gamestop hands out free Mario Mustaches just for showing up. Mario games have a great history when it comes to platformers. I can go without most of the sports/party games, though.

These are the biggest offenders for me for titles people love that I just hate. I'm not a fan of Halo, but have played it at a party and the social aspect can be enjoyable, but these three are just terrible titles that keep getting released.

Obviously they are doing something right because their fans love them, and I respect that, but I just hate the games themselves.

I'm sure people hate Rock Band too though, and that game can't do any wrong in my book lol.
As a street fighter fan (as in still plays ST, SSF4, and 3rd strike, competitively) its really only appealing to people with a competitive nature. You need to have the drive to improve your self. Not in just pulling off moves or doing combos (though doing a fancy combo like it was nothing is pretty cool sometimes), but improving yourself in meaningful ways like being less predictable, learning the difference between being patience and hesitation, or aggression and recklessness. And learning how to manipulate others like confusing your opponent, forcing your opponent to react a certain way, and a lot more stuff.

Sometimes just keeping up with the technical knowledge is very challenging to new players. Even things most veterans of the genre consider "basic" can be overwhelming to learn. New players usually have a hard time controlling their character, pulling off special moves or doing basic combos. Someone learning to defend themselves is pretty hard to (blocking, throw defense and anti airs). Then theres really hard stuff, like frame traps, option selects, 1 frame links, tick throws, mix-ups, footsies, zoning and mind games that someone has to deal with when they can barely just move and press buttons! So these games are a nightmare to learn on your own with no one helping you.

So basically if your a "games are art" kinda guy that doesn't give two shits about how a game works then you wont like fighters ever. If your think your the best at everything and you don't need anyone to tell you how to play then you will also never enjoy this genre cause any competent player worth their quarters will body your ass for fucking free and you'll just whine about how cheap everything is! But if you like a challenge and wanna learn how a certain game works and see who is the best out of your circle of friends, always looking to improve yourself, you could have a good time.

tl;dr

If your a gamer that likes games as games, and don't mind beating up your friends as long as your all a good sport about it, you'll like Street Fighter. If you are a gamer that likes storys, character archs, plot, you don't care about multiplayer, and don't care about too much about gameplay, then don't play street fighter.

Okami.

I always see people throwing this game up when someone brings up the "Games as art" argument but i never really cared for it.

Sure the scenery and atmosphere is beautiful, but the rest of the game to me was stale and boring.

Half Life 2 is my pick.
While I will agree that it's a fun game, I don't see how or why it is regarded as such a huge hit. The combat was ok and the characters were believable, but I have some serious gripes. I got stuck on a lot of the puzzles and there were a few parts in the game where I thought I was going the wrong way but actually wasn't.
There were also parts in the vehicle sections that were supposed to be quick, exciting moments but I would always botch them up because I wouldn't see them coming soon enough.
I personally blame general thickness on my part for the former, but I chalk awkward controls up for the latter.

I never got the love for Halo 2 back in its heydey. It was the opposite of everything I wanted from a shooter at the time. Of course, now I tend to view the Halo series from a different perspective and enjoy them in a different way, but I remember HATING Halo 2.

Also, just about every JRPG I've played or been exposed to. I loved FFVII, I loved FFX, I've mostly enjoyed Lost Odyssey as I play through it, and every other game in the entire genre I hate. This mostly has to do with a combination of characters having either overwrought completely ridiculous arcs or having no personality whatsoever, or being a stereotype character from a culture that I happen to hate the stereotypes of (seriously, enough of the ambiguously gendered heroes and villians that talk once every ten months and are revealed to be no more interesting than any person off the street.) OR the repetitive, needless stretching of a story through writing conceits and pointless grinding, which has never been fun EVER and yet is something you can look forward to in every single one of them (in Final Fantasy's case, stripping another layer of interactivity in each ensuing sequel) or all of the above. I watched my friend play FFXIII recently and we made it through exactly one hour of that no personality tunnel saga borefest before we couldn't take anymore, and the only reason we made it that far is because one of the characters looks like Kurt Cobain and we just started singing Nirvana lyrics over any dialogue that involved him in the scene.FFXIII is in my mind the symbol for what is wrong with JRPGs as a genre. Granted, western RPGs have just as many cliches, but western RPG writers occasionally want to tell an interesting story or give you dynamic personalities with depth, something that JRPGs only seem to stumble on occasionally by accident while formulating their ridiculous plot/world alchemy.

Wow, that turned into a weird catharsis.
