Do strategy games count? Warlords Battlecry II and III allow you to play as the Demon race, with all unique demon units and buildings and such.

WBCII also happens to be my favourite strategy game of all time, so I highly recommend it.

Yes, very much so!

I'm bad at strategy games, but I do still enjoy them. I recall trying a Warlords game of some description in the past, but I don't think I played enough to really gather an opinion on it. If you've played any of the Warcraft games, how would you say they compare? Re: controls, UI, difficulty, etc., because Warcraft is one of the few RTS metrics I have to compare by, unfortunately.

You're going to play Sacrifice, and thus good things are bound to happen. There's also Brutal Legend you can't complain about the lack of variety in summons there, it's still action based but with some strategy to work in too.

Another voice endorsing Scrifice. Great fun! Not all units are demonic (actually majority most likely ain't), but you decide what units you get so just go with the evil flame-y thingies.
Yeah, each level you pick which god you're going to serve at the time, and you unlock that god's unit. So, if you serve the fire god for the mission where you unlock your third unit, your third unit will be the fire one henceforth. The sniper laser bugs under the fire god are awesome, BTW. The death god and the fire god have most of the more "demonic" critters.

As for Summoner, RPG with a combat system based around timing combos for the main character, and being the Summoner, you also get the ability to summon demons. One at a time, you unlock them as the game progresses, and they are very central to the plot.

Dunno if this'd float your boat but on PS2 the Shadow Hearts games were pretty sweet. MC can turn into demons after absorbing their souls and the whole judgement ring makes it a little more action based. Fighting is almost exactly like Final Fantasy X though so not too action-y.
Plus, meant in the nicest way, you are incredibly precise in what you want so I don't know if this'd scratch the itch. It is full of demons though?

you might try Deception series. they are not to my liking gameplay wise but the character player gets to control in last one was daughter of satan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deception_series

HoMM 3 in either main campaign or expansion you get to play as necromancer. that was one of my favorite heroes ever. There are other devils/death factions in other HoMM games and Disciples games but all of them are poorly writen but if you like the gameplay those are enjoayble.

Dungeon Keeper 1/2 are awesome. First one didnt age well 2nd one is one of the best games ever made.

Diablo 2 you can have an awesome undead army and can defile enemy corpses. Still very awesome game. D3 I wouldnt recomend.

Path of Exile you can summon specters/skeletons/dead enemies into an army. The game is very fun and free.

Bayonetta - you controll witch character that finishes off bosses by summoning actual demons from underworld and your weapons are all made by demon from angel remains. Also this is one of the best action games ever made.

Torchlight. More so the first than the second. I think it's the alchemist, he can summon a fair few minions on his own tech tree, and with additional spells can summon undead, spiders etc.. To the point where the player themselves don't need to partake in combat that much and have your own hordes being around a dozen or more.

I'm not sure if it would satisfy this particular urge, but I have been meaning to try the Shadow Hearts series anyway.

Oh yes, I know. 'Twas a very specific thing I wanted because games don't seem to do it very often.

I liked the ability to have a little army of imps following you around, but that kind of falls under not having enough summon variety. Particularly since the more powerful summons are just mechanical golems. That said, perhaps the modding community has come up with something.

Playing a Necromancer in Guild Wars 2 is apparently pretty dope. The game itself is rad too, it's nice to have an MMO that doesn't really pressure you into playing because you're paying a monthly fee.

It's also (finally) getting an expansion soon, so they might have the original game discounted.

I just remembered another one: Dungeon Defenders.

Granted, this one is a little weird due to being Tower Defence, but the summoner class can spawn an number of different minions, and if you play the older version (not the GOTY version of it) then you have a separate limit for minions, so you can have both towers and minions if you play solo. As the summoner you can also control the minions in an RTS'ey kind of way.

However, most of the game and it's DLC really isn't solo friendly after the first few dozen hours.

I tend to play MMO's and ARPG's. I would recommend Marvel Heroes Online. It's one of the best F2P games out currently. You can play as Dr. Strange and he summons demons. They have a few other summoner's as well. Rift is also a game with a lot of summoning options and is also F2P and it is similar to WoW and much better imo when it comes to character build options since you get to triple class.
I've thought about trying Marvel Heroes, the only thing that's really stopped me is that it's had a lot of bad press due to their F2P practices. I do have Rift installed as well, but the problem with playing an MMO is that it tends to just make me want to play WoW again. :(
Sorry been gone a bit. Felt compelled to address the F2P bit about Marvel Heroes. I have played a lot of F2P games and I actually find the F2P model in Marvel Heroes to be among the most fair. There is very little if anything that I have felt required to pay for which is a lot of why I advocate it. A lot of the items in the Cash shop are available in the game as we'll though not quite everything. Character costumes and additional item storage are really the only things that you really need to buy in the cash shop if you want them. Costumes do drop in game sometimes and are available through farming certain event drops, but I'm not going to claim those are practical means of obtaining them in a lot of cases. That said, costumes are purely aesthetic and don't confer any abilities or advantages. Buying new characters are available through an in game currency that drops regularly through game play. Same with buying side kicks. The dev's are also always releasing free codes to the public for more free item store items. And you get a log in reward every day and unlike a lot of games that so that it isn't just a bunch of garbage, but actually useful stuff. I would really recommend giving it a shot if you like ARPG's and Marvel. Unfortunately Dr. Strange is not an available starter character, so you will either have to play as someone else and farm eternity splinters till you can buy him in game, or you can spend a few bucks and buy him from the cash shop outright. But that is really the only downside I see for you atm.

In addition to Devil Survivor, there's Devil Summoner 1 and 2. I've only played 2, which I think would be better for you since it lets you have 2 demons out at once instead of 1. In addition to using them for combat, many of them have special abilities outside of combat, like telepathy, encouraging you to have a balanced team of devils to summon.

Also, the combat is in real time, with you being able to block, evade, and hide your devils with a button press to prevent them from getting hit.

Well, the Warlords series is kinda split, Warlords is turn-based, while Warlords Battlecry is real-time. Just a clarification so it doesn't confuse you.

I've only played a little bit of Warcraft III at a mates place when I was much younger, but there are quite a few similarities.
First, the WBC series was the first to introduce a 'hero' unit, which was added in Warcraft III, but I found it was done to perfection in WBC II. Also, unlike Warcraft, the WBC series has many more races, with 9 in the first, 12 in the second, and 15 in the third. All races completely unique save oen or two units/buildings.
In terms of gameplay, from memory it was pretty similiar. You've got swordfighting and spells and the like. The gathering of resources is a bit different I think, but I imagine if you've played Warcraft you should be able to pick up WBC pretty easily. It's just a case of learning what units do, what research developments mean and that sorta stuff.

If you're interested, I'd definitely say to look into the second Battlecry game. There's no story unlike the other two, but it's not needed. All the races are balanced exceptionally (and fun to play, learn their strengths/weaknesses etc.), the AI is intelligent, there's a boatload of different and fun victory conditions, the hero system is pretty in-depth, plus the Demon race that you're after is one of my favourites. It's available on GOG.com.

Whew! That's a lot of information. I'll keep a watch on GOG for them. And I like the idea of heroes being units you use in combat.
GOG sales frequently have the entire HoMM franchise on sale - that's 1 through 5, so I'm pretty sure you'll be able to pick it up soon-ish.

Also a quick note which I forgot to mention before - there is a Heroes 3 HD edition on Steam. Do not get it - apparently it's seriously not worth it as it's just the base game without the expansions.
Yeah, that's why I said I'd watch on GOG.
Well if you're looking for them, the current Humble Bundle is going with a Might and Magic theme.

There's Demon King Box for 3ds. You have a hero demon, and summon underlings to fight across one of three lanes of combat to defeat your demon foe on the other side. You attain more hero demons, and more underlings as you go.

Umm, do not get that bundle. It's horrendous
- no Heroes 3 (just the HD edition)
- Heroes 5 appears to be the base game only, without expansions.
- you get the games shotgun scattered through different platforms
- most of them are on Uplay
- no GOG

Sure, they could include the actual good version of H3 and the expansions of H5 but why the hell weren't they here now? They should be the thing that sells the bundle. And even then, it would still be better to just pick up the games off GOG anyway.

About HoMM snip
In case you haven't bought any HoMM you might want to check out new HumbleBundle. Unfortunately it seems HoMM 4/5 has to be redeemed on Uplay and 3 on Steam, so waiting for a GoG sale might be preferable if you're not a fan of DRM.

See directly above. I don't think it's a really good bundle at all. At most, you can get Heroes 6 for cheap but that's about it.

I am not entirely sure what you are looking for in terms of games. At first, I thought it was third-person action close to WOW, but then you said strategy games also count.

I know this is (at least) one step removed from a strategy game, but maybe Hearthstone could fill your "summoning-demon-in-a-WOW-setting" needs. Of course, it is a card game, but given that you are including strategy games...
