And you'd be wrong, people did buy ET on the 2600, they played it, realized it was crap and told everyone they knew it was crap which lead to them not being able sell the game. Discovery talked about this fiasco on their Rise of the Videogame documentary a couple of years ago. As further proof that copies of this game exist here's the ebay search results.

EDIT: Forgot my contribution, Cybercon III

I'm pretty sure my best friend and I are the only people who've played this game.

Strife : Quest for the Sigil.

One of the last games to use the Doom engine, it was quickly forgotten as Quake came out some weeks later, trumping it completely in a wave of innovation and upgraded technology. But Strife was an underrated classic - it was one of the first games to incorporate a fully-fledged story into a shooter, especially in the days of run-down-corridor-shoot-bad-guy as back in Doom's days.

There was an inventory system, conversations, three different endings and some reasonable levels of non-linear gameplay, too. Not to mention some quality voice acting!

But the reason why I loved Strife so much is because it was SO DAMN HARD on "Bloodbath" mode. Pickups did not regenerate - any enemy that wasn't a rank-and-file grunt respawned - it was a nightmarishly hard game and anyone looking for a reasonable challenge should invest time in tracking it down, I recommend it.

and I'm not sure about this one, but a long time ago (1997) i owned an aussie made rts called "dark reign" and have not ever heard anyone talk about it.
I fucking love Dark Reign, I even bought Dark Reign 2, which was waaaaay ahead of its time with the camera controls.

Anyway, I don't think anyone has played Birthright.

It's pretty cool, really.

Dark Cloud 2
Dark cloud 2 is pretty badass for what it's worth. I actually bought the first one thinking i would like it. I was wrong. Then my wife rented the 2nd one and got me into it. Between the art and weapon creation it was a pretty fun game.

yes i bought dark reign 2 as well, it was good, also made by different people. it brought something other then the usual things we saw in rts' like Age of Empire. spicing it up with a space setting

Wasn't the first space setting I saw (having played starcraft, total annihilation, and such) but I really loved how the 3D worked and you could rotate and zoom the camera anywhere, and I remember the campaign being really cool.

It and it's sequel were on game tap. I played both and found them to be exceedingly mediocre.

I was already an adult before those games existed, how many people played them for the first time ever in their 30s?

Ok how about Plundered Hearts then?

Skullmonkeys anyone?
I'll go one better and say I've played The Neverhood, to which Skullmonkeys was sort of a sequel. What I liked most about both games (apart from the excellent claymation) was the sound design - especially the little "bonus stage" song in Skullmonkeys: think Portal's "Still Alive" but 10 years earlier!

I could dig through my memory of almost 30-year-old games I've played to try and stump you, but I'll give you a fair chance - Blackthorne by then-unknown Blizzard Entertainment.

I guess I play a lot of obscure games... I'll start with the one's that have been mentioned here already.

Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood was an excellent game. The mouse movement = sword movement attempt was interesting, but Robin usually ended up flailing around.

Stronghold is one of my favorite series. It's not too focused in any one area, and it's always fun to outwit the AI. Or build a tower next to their castle, and fill it with archers.

I played Kingdom of Loathing briefly, for lack of other games. Does it count if I only played for a couple days?

Evil Genius was amazing! Especially the second island, when you can plan the entire base from the start. Or interrogating maids to learn their cleaning secrets. Or torturing people using a giant mixing bowl. I highly recommend it.

Certainly not least, Dwarf Fortress. I happen to be playing it right now. My Dwarves are determined to not build that bridge I want... Unfortunately my laptop is so slow, it takes forever for anything to get done.

Now, for the ones I don't think ya'll have played.

The first is Shogun Empires, for the DS. If you haven't played it, don't bother.

The other two I played on the Dreamcast, and they were both great.
1. Fur Fighters
2. Toy Commander

Battletanks. Such a great game series. Kick the crap out of your enemy in a bloody tank! All sorts of fun weapons too!
