I can name innumerable Schmups ("Shoot em' Ups". Think Galaga, Gradius III, or R-Type).

Star Fox 64 made the Schmup accessible to most players.
Outside of the "Bullet Hell" series of schmups (which is more like trying to navigate the lines of a Magic Eye painting), I cannot really think of any terribly difficult ones.

Seriously though. R-Type 3 on Advanced Mode (you have to beat the game) can be brutally unfair past stage 3.

...Earthworm Jim, Battletoads, Mega Man X... all old favorites of mine. If it doesn't have a compelling story to tell, it should be that hard, in my opinion.

Yeah Ninja Gaiden. I tried it on the hardest level first thinking I could pass it...didn't get past the second boss fight.

Then I tried it on regular still couldn't get passed the second boss. I would have been real fun too, if I could just pass it.
Regular quest is very hard, but doable on normal. If you're really good, hard and Master Ninja are possible too (although you'll die A LOT). However, if you actually beat all the Missions, you must be either unemployed with no life or hacking. They are so damn hard.
...Well Radioactive Lemur I have no life or a job (not my fault no one wants to hire me!) I still have yet to beat the second boss...on normal...
Wait do you mean Doku? You do know that you're not supposed to be able to beat him right? I mean, some insanely good players have done it and got some kind of reward, but 99.999% of people lose. However, after he kills you, the game actually continues. If it doesn't let you continue the story after he kills you there's probably something wrong with the disc.

I am not the greatest player so I usually play on a "Normal" difficulty, sometimes even easy. There are two major exceptions in recent memory i can think of offhand where I played on the hardest difficulty, Wolverine: Origins and Darksiders. Wolverine wasn't so bad, though the last boss was really annoying due to the collapsing scenery. Darksiders though was a pain in the ass, especially at the beginning. I started on the hardest difficulty because I rarely play through the same game more than once and the achievement guide suggested apocalyptic difficulty was "not that bad."

In actually while it was doable towards the end when you have maxed out rage and health attributes, towards the beginning it was hard as hell. Tiamat was probably the most troublesome part since you only have one health extension by the time you face her and the attacks can take off a huge chunk of your health bar. Took me several days to get past that part.

The guy underground? He looks like a massive human fish thing? If its him, my disk is dead, he's killed me thousands of times and I haven't moved forward.

Hard in what way?

Half the people who see Dwarf Fortress quit because of the graphics.

Half of the ones that stay quit when they see the 40-odd video tutorials it takes to learn to play.

Half of the ones that stay after that quit when their fort is overrun with forgotten horrors unfathomable to mere mortal minds despite watching 40-odd video tutorials.

The rest of us figure out how to spam plump helmets and shut the door when monsters come a'knocking. Now there are plans to have enemies that can dig...

It's hard to visualize, hard to understand, hard to master, and soon enough it will be hard to survive. It's also quite simply fun.

Ah my bad, you're probably on the 360 version. That's not in the PS3 version I played. For the record, Doku is a dark samurai in black armor.

COD: Modern Warfare: the end of the level "One shot, one kill" on Veteran where you have to hold out and wait for chopper evac. They throw hundreds of enemies at you, which is not normally a problem, but when you die in one hit that many enemies is more than a little problematic. I spent more than four hours on what should have taken twenty minutes.
