Mass Effect 2 (but not Mass Effect 1, because I actually expected that to suck. So I didn't have any expectations for it to live up to.)

Batman: Arkham Asylum. My expectations weren't exactly high, I was just expecting a liscensed game a cut above the rest, and what I got was a liscensed game that was a cut and a half above the rest.

...and that's it really, I'm the sort of guy who tends to buy games 6 months to a year after they're released, so I don't often get affected by the hype machine.

Assassin's Creed II.

I was so excited for that then I played it and I had a total nerdgasm.
Finally, that phrase caught on!

MW2 for me. Other people may think it was shit, but it seemed just right to me. the campaign was short enough for somebody with a busy timetable like myself, but full of enough excitement to entice me to the end. The multiplayer is fun, if a little unsophisticated player-wise.

Fable 2. My expectations were low, and it exceeded them at every turn. Yes, my expectations were LOW.

Bioshock 2

I was expecting an over-hyped average game but it just blew me away.
I love bioshock...

Shadow of the Colossus and Okami.

Nevermind hearing that SotC was a great game, I was really anxious to play it since I first heard what it was about. For me, an action/adventure game consisting entirely of boss battles and no smaller enemies appealed directly to my sensibilities, so if anything, I went in with really high expectations, which is usually the setup for large disappointment. However, the game actually broke through my expectations, far surpassing them and leaving them in the dust.

I saw trailers for Okami when I worked at a video game store. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise, I'd imagine, but the trailer seemed to appeal to me - the art style was pleasing, and the gameplay mechanic was truly unique. I had also recently turned sour towards JRPGs, which was the genre I was initially anticipating the most when I first planned to buy a used PS2. I was utterly disappointed with what the PS2 promised me, but I was happily whiling away time on SotC right before Okami was released. I gave it a shot and it BLEW MY MIND.

To put things in perspective, I figured that God of War had all the makings of a game designed specifically to my tastes. But I did find it somewhat overrated and felt that it simply "pretty good." To be fair, it did keep me interested long enough for me to play it through to the end and the day will come that I will play through God of War, so I don't mean to imply that it's a bad game, by any means. But I felt it was "good" rather than "great," as far as my experience with it is concerned.

Gears of war fell way short

Killzone 2 was more fun than I expected

Team Fortress 2 was right on point, every good thing I heard about it was true.

Tekken 6. I expected Tekken 5 plus a few extras and a better replacement of Devil Within. and that's what I got.

WHY IN THE HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK WOULD NAMCO PROGRAM AZAZEL TO BLOCK WHILE ATTACKING!?

Talk about unfairness.

Psychonauts!

I was worried it would be nowhere near as good as everyone made it out to be...best game ever!

And World Of Warcraft, I was bored one day and decided to give the free trial a go thinking 'it can't be THAT good!'......................................*is on a quest*

World of Warcraft >w< I'd never actually played an MMO before that and I didn't understand what all the fuss was about until I tried that nifty little 10 day demo... Which isn't nearly enough time, by the way!

Also, although a lot of people have already said it, Mass Effect 2. :p What a great game...

The entire Orange Box- I really had no love for FPS games at the time, but I'd watched a Portal walkthrough on YouTube and loved it. Not only was Portal more fun to play than I had expected, I've become absolutely addicted to Half Life (I need to get the original game <_<). I'd seen Yahtzee's review, I'd seen other people talk about it (both pros and cons), and I really wasn't sure just what to expect- I didn't think the characters would be as good as some said they were, I didn't think the story would be good (I have never been a fan of alien invasions), and I just... really prepared myself to be disappointed.

I'm currently on my third go-round of HL2, and I've beaten both episodes twice, and it's not looking to stop anytime soon.

Mass Effect 2. My only real complaint is the planet scanning, and that is such a miniscule part of the game. I was expecting it to be about as fun as ME1, but it was much, much more.

Half-Life 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Gears of War (shut up, I loved it)
Mass Effect (Changed my view on gaming forever)
Mass Effect 2 (Even better than the first)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (Possibly one of the best multiplayer shooters ever. I still love it)
Team Fortress 2
Star Wars Republic Commando
Command and Conquer Generals
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War
Crash Team Racing (fuck Mario Kart, CTR for the win)

All of those games were fantastic and made for hundreds of hours of entertainment.
