Just Cause 2.

Not that it needed to make sense, telling me I have a dual grapple hook, infinite parachutes, and a nice military arsenal and to go nuts was all i needed.

Katamari Forever

Rolling up mice with a large sticky ball while listening to cheesy J-Pop.

It's awesome, but the game is so flippin weird.

Devil May Cry. All of them.
And Okami, wich for me is a shame since I really liked the game and I think they lost a chance to make it even more epic by giving it a cohesive story.
Oh, and Diablo 2. It never explained why Diablo felt the need to tag along with Marius, or why Tyrael thought it was a good idea to trust him to go to hell and save the world. He's just a random junkie that they found in a bar for christ sake.

To the people saying Gears of War, what was so hard to understand? It takes place on another planet (Sera), the humans can`t leave because they don`t have space ships. They are fighting the Locust because the Locust want to get away from the underground, where they are fighting a civil war against the Lambent, Locust who have been exposed to too much Imulsion (Sera`s Oil expy) and have mutated. First game involves Delta trying to deploy a WMD against the Locust, second has the COG getting their asses kicked and deciding to go on the offensive (and agsin, getting their butt kicked). Its really not that complicated.

As for me, I always thought that the plot to Vanquish was kind of silly. It makes some sense all the way up to the very end. Then they pull out a big plot twist that...doesn`t really make much sense. Its like MW2`s twist, but without any context or purpose.

I never got Eternal Sonata's story, it seems to be all over the place with unresolved plotlines and romances before you have to kill Frederick Chopin and a girl jumps off a cliff and then somehow you have saved the world.

Nothing makes any sense. A main protagonist (be it a ball of stuff or otherwise) constantly controlled by a man/woman/boy/girl in a completely different universe, using only a single allocated mind-control device, of which has different forms (created by Microsoft/Sony/Apple/Nintendo). IT'S MADNESS!

Serious Sam Double D.
So far it doesn't seem to have a real story but the game is about a macho man runing arround piramids, stacking guns and fighting headless men with bombs in their hands, gorillas with jet legs and syrup covered pancakes with football horns sprouting from them o_O

Mafia 2. So much of the story was so obviously cut out of the game. There are many plot holes and things left unexplained. It's not that it doesn't make sense. It kinda does, but not as much as it should have, considering how long it was in development. I feel like crying when I think about Mafia 2. It's such a wasted potential.

What isn't coherent about Okami? It makes sense to me.

Modern Warfare 2.

"Go to Brazil!"
"Why?"
"Just cuz"

Or the russians perfect plan of invading an airport with just three people, and being expected to kill everyone there including the 2 squads of fully armed riot cops, and then get to their van safely.

Also, Doom 3. Why are only certain people possessed? Why doesn't the Doom Guy get possessed? If it's because he's a badass, then why aren't the more mellow scientists you sometimes come across possessed or zombified?
It's all about willpower. You actually do sort of get possessed in the beginning. Look in a mirror, and you get this creepy quick cutscene where it's your guy turning into a zombie, but then everything goes back to normal because he's immune to it. The few scientists and marines who are left are too strong of mind to be possessed. Everyone else gets their brains raped by the devil. (ZSec; all the other zombies; hell, even Sergeant Kelly.)

Devil may cry's stoyline does make sense for the most part with the exception of Nero having the blood of Sparta. They never explained that plot point at all.

The rest is easy Dante and Virgil are twin brothers who is good while the other is evil they fight each other. Dante wins at the end of DMC3 and opens up his shop "devil may cry" and Trish comes and offers him a job to kill his father's enemy Mundus in DMC1 and he does at the end of the game. While DMC2 he looking for a way into hell to get his brother Virgil back. IN DMC4 Nero has to kill Sacntus(spelling?) for kidnapping his girlfriend Kyreia(spelling?) and Dante is trying to find his brother's sword and take back his father's sword as well and any devil arms that "Holy Order" has in it possession
I thought the reason why Nero has Sparta's blood and was able to use Virgil's Sword was because he was Virgil's Son. Or am i just jumping to conclusions?

Any of the beat `em ups - Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear ...

but the shit-filled caked goes to mother fucking Dead Or Alive 2 ...

Seriously ... a fucking TENGU ?!?!? Who? Where?! What the fuck is going on ?! I have a middle-eastern mercenary, a rapper, and a fucking OPERA SINGER bashing the shit out of each other for the pleasure of getting repeatedly mind fucked by a mythical monster ?!!?!

EDIT:
Here's the story according to wikipedia:

" .. A great leader was killed at the end of the 20th century. His name was Fame Douglas, and he was renowned as the sponsor of the legendary Dead or Alive World Combat Championship. Since his death, and in the absence of his charisma and leadership, the world has become chaotic. Yet something appears to be transpiring. Amid this chaos, it is announced that the Dead or Alive Championship 2 will be held. However, Douglas's passing has taken with it the purpose and significance of the tournament. Even worse, the promoter of Dead or Alive Championship 2, who is fond of conflicts and jealous of the string, is responsible for Douglas's death. The new promoter is more than a corrupt mastermind, but a man of pure evil. His involvement in the tournament has brought a sense of terror to the world, resulting in the infamous Tengu disaster that occurred at the end of the 20th century. The climax of the disaster is about to begin with a roaring battle ... "

Rrright. A fight promoter was bringing peace and harmony to the world, but he was killed by a rival promoter who is jealous of the string (wtf?), and this rival promoter is a nasty guy who .. .. .. no, I just fucking give up.

Crysis 2.

The campaign was great, but I couldn't make heads or tails of the story.
I'm currently experiencing this. Game is fun as hell but if you asked me to explain the story... I'd have to resort to distracting you and running away.

Reading this thread, you'd almost believe there isn't a single coherent video game story...
...And if you read a thread entitled "who's the gayest character in gaming", you'd almost believe there isn't a single game that doesn't at least include someone in the closet.
