Brink.

It hyped up its character customisation, it hyped up its movement mechanics.

What we ended up with was a terrible, terrible, TF2 clone.
and lets not forget the "no girls allowed" fiasco

IMO when it comes to the heat of battle does the eye depth of your character matter all that much?

I think a sacrifice for females would have been worth it
Agreed.

I like making women more than I like making men.

Pretty much every character I make in an RPG is a woman :D

From Dust looked awesome but I found it pretty horrible. This applies more to map packs and things I bought and instantly regretted.

What are some games that fooled you with hype and made you buy them only to regret it later?
Games don't generally make you buy them...anyway!

If a friend refers you to a game, then they're the ones that fooled you. Not the game.
That's true...but the same goes with marketing such as the marketing campaign used for Dragon Age 2. I can't fucking believe I got that game...It wasn't a bad game but I remember it being marketed as a fantasy RPG epic like the last...but it was a linear, hack-n-slash with RPG elements and a roaster of supporting characters who range from forgettable to downright horrible except for your sister the mage and, Varric. Also in a game where a big issue was the same-sex coupling why the Hell can't you have Varric wield your +69 War Hammer. Instead you get a pirate winch who looks like she carries more diseases than items. Also, why did a Final Fantasy character come in claiming to be an Elf?

You had pretty much sum up 2008 Alone in the Dark and abit of The Last Story for me.

I was impress with the game engine with Alone in the Dark and the many trailers of it however what I was watching was the Xbox 360 version (I owned the Wii.
Needless to say I was super pissed when I played the Wii version and the changes to it like you cannot combine items together and for some strange reason the plot was different in the Wii version.

With the Last Story they hype it out to be an awesome game and the gimmick/ mechanic it used (like hiding behind walls) and it's made by the same person who did this Final Fantasy game so you know it's awesome (same with the soundtrack).
When I played the game, the story and soundtrack was bland (I've been spoiled by the awesome varity in Xenoblade Chronciles) and the game is too lineral.

Castlevania Lords Of Shadow.
What a shitty, shitty game, I should have just got the demo and played that over and over, same effect really. Didn't exactly help that it was nothing like the Castlevanias that I've grown to love (Portrait of Ruin and such) What really pisses me off is that it was a choice between that and Enslaved (which is amazeballs) but everyone gave LOS the higher scores.

The last 3 games I bought on hype were Skyrim, Witcher 2 and Deus Ex HR. But that wasn't publicly generated hype, it was due to me being a fan of those series. So self generated hype.

The only one I'm disappointed with is Witcher 2, because I can't get it to work.

I never buy something based on publicly generated hype. Never. I HAVE bought some games on a whim, but it's usually "Hmm, that box art looks kinda cool... ?15? Why not". They are the ones that disappoint me the most.

Beat Hazard and Polynomial. Beat Hazard just looked so fun, and it ended up just being kinda...meh. The Polynomial is pretty cool in terms of visuals, but I just don't have any idea what I'm supposed to do.

Guess I'm just a sucker for music-interpreter games.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 in recent memory...great gameplay but bare-bones content. What was a bigger slap in the face was that 9 months later they release a better version that should have came out the first time.
which was again pretty bare-bones.

another game that didn't fool me, but did fool some friends of my (even though i warned them) was SFxTK. man one of them was Pissed! came to me saying i was right and how capcom is evil and stuff.

The Force Unleashed 2. Yeah, that game. 60dollars for 6 hours of bad storyline and boring gameplay. I'm having a derection right now because you made me think of it.
How in the world did you manage to stretch it out that long?

Anyway, for me it would have to have been Fracture. The trailers made it look fun, the tutorial was enjoyable to play, the weapons and story were rather creative. I thought it was going to be a fun time when I got it. Then about 5 hours later I was rather disappointed with what it had turned into.

Ah yes. I have a history with this. Now I do my research.

The worst case was in my highschool years in the PS1 era where I bought the Men in black game on impulse because I saw a review of it which made it look good. It sucked hairy old man testicles.

A few years ago I bought Shadow of the colossus because what the back of the cover said about the game. I got the impression that I could explore the whole region & look for the colossi. Instead, you had to kill them in sequencial order & your sword led you to their location. The game itself wasn't bad, just linear. And I wanted the pleasure of searching for them myself in any order.

I think the most recent was Mirrors edge. Again, it wasn't that bad a game just limiting & the controls are awkward.

Oh hell yes! New Metroid game! This is going to be aweso... oh. Oh, Gods.
This one right here. The first truly abysmal entry in the once-proud Metroid series, ruining the most prominent and powerful female character in gaming. And now there's been absolutely no word on anything Metroid since, so I guess it also spells the end of Metroid altogether.

nope. sorry.

it will never beat this

not even close.
Dead Island doesn't really count for me because it's a non-gameplay trailer that generated all the hype. Once you saw the gameplay you instantly knew it wasn't worth it.

Witcher 2 I just can't get into, not the story, love the story. But the combat mechanics are so clunky for my liking that they kill the flow of the game.

NBA 2K12, after having such a good time with 2K11...got to love companies that backtrack on their games. Which brings us to nothing else other than:

Diablo 3, anyone who has bought it and has reached inferno difficulty should know what I'm talking about.

There must be a few more than I've forgot, FO3:NV comes to mind, but the feeling there was lost mostly due to the crashes and not the actual game,so I don't think it counts fully.
