The recently released Red Dead Redemption has an amazingly heart-throbbing ending.

John Marston, reunited with his wife, son, and rancher 'friend' Uncle, returns to his ranch in Beecher's Hope and tries to start up his farm again. However, soon after, the American Army rushes your door and you, your son, and Uncle must defend the ranch. Soon, Uncle is shot and John and his son, Jack, rush to the barn. Your wife Abigail and Jack get onto a horse and, as you say your last goodbye's, ride off. John turns around, looks through a crack in the barn door, and sees Edgar Ross and Archer, the government agents from before. Finally accepting his fate, John walks outside, and takes out 6 of the soldiers, including Archer. The other soldiers, along with Edgar Ross, put John down.

3 Years late, Abigail has died and Jack Marston is now a lonely gunslinger. He travels to Lake Julio and soon finds Edgar Ross, who he kills in a duel as revenge for his father. The story ends there. Is it a cliffhanger? An epilogue? A possible sequel? Who knows, but it is one thing: good.
This. It took me by surprise, but in an awesome way. Oh, and Resistance 2.

ICO and SOTC´s endings were both fantastic.

Warcraft 3: TFT had one of my favorite endings of all time (the final cutscene was just epic on a whole new level).

Bioshock and Bioshock 2 both had great endings, the 2nd one´s almost made me cry.

Planescape: Torment (really, it's the answer to every question about goodness)
Fallout (the original; FO3 WAS NOT as good at reflecting your in-game choices)
Ultima 7: Black Gate (another one that's always an answer)
Ultima 4, 5, and 6 for that matter.
Longest Journey (if Dreamfall ended it would be here, too)
Shadows of the Colossus (never played Ico, but probably good)
Okami (SoC made me think of it)
Mass Effect (felt obliged to have a current gen choice)
KOTOR (although the mid-game reveal was better)
Bioshock (although, again, the mid-game reveal was better)

I'm surely forgetting some, but that's a start.

God of War 3. That ending didn't fully justify all the murder of the innocents that kratos has done, but almost.

I quite enjoyed the Mass Effect endings, they seem to nail that Empire Strikes Back tone of you don't want it to end, but it's not a horrible cliffhanger.
I really enjoyed the original Fallout 3 ending. it had a nice cyclic quality to it.
Any WW2 game ending is always good.
F.E.A.R's ending was confusing but amazing, F.E.A.R 2's ending was the same but through a crack pipe.
Flashback on the SNES/Megadrive had an amazing ending for it's time.

It's hard to think of endings that don't leave it open for a sequel. I always liked Metal Gear Solid's (psx) frankly confusing live action end titles (POLAR BEARS), they did the same in 2 if I recall.

Persona 3's ending while very bitter sweet tied up everything and kept with the game's theme. Then the Answer just made it all the better.

Obligatory SoTC answer, and I'm probably going to get it for liking it but the end of Dawn of the Dragon wasn't too bad.

Other than those: Persona 4, DDS1 for being a great cliffhanger,Kingdom Hearts,Yoshi's Island, and A link to the past for the bitching music.

Uncharted 2 did even though we all know there will be a sequel, naturally like Indiana Jones.

Then of course there's the many "good" endings in games where moral choice is a feature.

Shadow of the Colossus, though I may be biased, because IMO pretty much everything is good about that game. I actually cried at the end when Agro came limping into the temple.
I would call you biased then since everyone else I know at least, thought it was bitter sweet.

The only game that comes to my mind of the ones i've recently played is Mass Effect 1.
That was epic.

Fallout 3.
I'm sorry, but I have to slap you in the face.

The game was undoubtedly awesome, but it had the crappiest ending I've seen in any game for a very long time.
Especially when you have a companion that could EASILY have done it for you without dying.
But no, they just refuse for no reason and make you go kill yourself.
Even the end-game narration sucked.
It's so bad that the DLC for the game actually rewrote it.

For one that I liked, I can't really think of any that hasn't already been mentioned.
Ico make me smile.
Planescape Torment was also really, really good.
The fact that you feel all proud and stuff as you get banished to hell to battle in an never ending war for eternity is one hell of a feat.

Just Cause 2's ending was a cliff-hanger??
Errr??
I felt the game explained absolutely nothing about Rico. Should I have played Just Cause 1?

OP: Mass Effect 2 had a good ending (as long as you don't get Shepard killed) and the cliffhanger left a lot of questions like:

Where did Shepard get a fleet of Reapers and why would he need them?

Oh and Resistance 2, I don't realy know why though just liked the ending.
I agree, it wasn't amazing.
But still.. somehow it's one of my favourite game endings.
The main one that sticks in my head anyway.

yeah, it felt a little shitty knowing it was a stupid cliffhanger (yeah i know it was apparently dealt with in the books but... whatever), but then i thought about it and rationalized it as a "price of war"/"memento mori" situation... might not work for you but it justifies the ending for me without needing another (though another would be sweet)

Rez and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri have great endings.
Take it we're talking the whole transcendence thing (in SMAC)? Absolutely loved it, though the Alien Crossfire story never really caught me.
