Way back when Eternal Darkness came out, my friend bought it and hurried over at around 10pm to play it at my house. So we started playing, lights off. And then the volume bar starts going down, and he turns to look at me and says "Why did you turn the volume down?" I reply that I didn't and point to the remote that is on the other side of the bedroom, and we freaked out. And then the bathtub scene, where you walk into the bathroom and see your character lying in it, dead with her wrists slashed open and blood everywhere. We were fucking terrified.

I miss games like that. >:

EDIT - Also that damn mannequin sequence was terrifying. Reminds me of that episode of Doctor Who. D:

Trust me when I say this. Never play Fatal Frame at night when you are by yourself! You will scare the crap out of yourself.
That's exactly why you should play it at night, on your own, with the lights off, and surround sound.

Project Zero is the only game to make me really consistently scared, so much that I had to take breaks from playing it.

The sequels are nowhere near as scary, though the story of the second one is excellent.

OT: Ehh Dead Space made me jump a few times, and I used to be scared of Regeneradors from Resi 4 but nothing really

I might buy myself Fatal Frame and/or Condemned........... 0_O

Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle. A game that proves that Stealth and Survival horror can go hand in hand hopping around in a flowerfield.

Chzo Mythos and 1213 were really creepy.

And Ravenholm from Half Life 2 was also pretty intense.

... Yeah, I don't play alot of horror games.

Games really don't scare me. I find they all use the same damn scare tactics that you can see coming a mile away. Dead Space was one of those games.

"Oh hey, Necromorph on the floor. I bet it's alive."

"rawr"

"Yep. Saw that coming."

I'm going to have to third Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Something about that just hit my scaredy-cat buttons. It was the only game I've ever had to put aside because I found it too mentally difficult to continue playing.

STALKER: Clear Sky doesn't focus directly on scares, but certain parts of the game really achieve it. There are very few scripted events in the game, so most of the time if a monster attacks you, it's because it was wandering around and found you. The best part is in the Red Forest, when all sorts of mutants lurk around and make noises in the bushes. There are two that will really get you; Bloodsuckers, which take quite a bit to kill, are mostly invisible, and before charging 60 feet at you will let out a very distinctive scream. Also there's this one two-legged thing the size of a shed that basically barrels toward you like a Big Daddy. The only way I managed to kill one was with about 5 other Stalkers shooting at it simultaneously.

I played a game called Extermination for the PS2 a year and a half ago. It really blew me away for a game that was only $4.89 at Electronic Boutique.

Treasures Of The Deep, and the Shalebridge Cradle in Thief: Deadly Shadows. Now THAT is a true triumph of game design.

Mirror's Edge scared me shitless at certain points in the game...
But that isn't even a horror game...

OT: Pretty much every level in Condemned.
Strangely enough... Horror-games don't scare as much as that game did...
