*Spoiler Alert* CoD4

The part in Call of Duty 4 when you see the nuke go off and where you go around as the marine in the ruined city and realize... he dies :( made me sad i was like "he cant die... noooo... he just cant.. main character" and in the end of the game where everybody dies on the bridge and then the russians come in and rescue's you.
I forgot about that one. I was madly bashing buttons as he was fading, yelling "you have to live dammit".

Either I'm the only one here to play Braid, or I'm the only one it has actually affected emotionally.

BioShock. I came away from it thinking about Objectivism and fascism like I hadn't before. No one in BioShock is finger quotes evil. They're just well-intentioned people who were far less advanced than they thought they were, with horrible, horrible consequences do largely to their self-imposed isolation. Granted, the fact that they were arrogant enough to try Ryan's experiment in the first place speaks to their character flaws. But it wasn't like they knew how bad everything was going to get. They were just simple people and it got away from them.

I never felt this way about game characters before. These aren't run-of-the-mill bad guys for the player to kill - they're messed up people who must be stopped, but again, it's nobody's fault, the situation is just out of control. I've never played another game that left that kind of impact.
Well, I think there was one person who could be called evil -
Fontaine

And I definitely agree about Planescape & KOTOR.

Silent Hill 2, hands down. After having the revelation of finding out the story behind James and Mary, I felt genuinely immersed in the experience.

I also second BioShock.

The moment I entered Andrew Ryan's office, and he commanded me to feed him his own putter, I felt way badass and off my testosterone levels. But once I found out that Atlas was Fontaine, I was pissed enough to attempt to bash through everything with a wrench. Yeah, stupid choice, but I needed to get my stress off somehow, and seeing clouts of blood and spittle fly out from the Splicers was very satisfying.

Beyong Good and Evil, when the lighthouse was destroyed. It's one of those moments that makes me want to cry.

Totally. Why? Because the characters were well written! In a videogame? Imagine that!

Shadow of the Colossus. It was just epic, and I felt it.
Showed that to my GF a while back and she asked why i was killing the poor giants who were just minding their own business... I tried to explain that the character was trying to revive his love but she said the giants looked so sad when they died...

I can't play that game anymore.
Very true. I just couldn't get away from the fact that I was killing a bunch of things that were just hanging out in the mountains. It made me feel like one of those irrational Lost A Loved One And Is Willing To Do Anything To Get Them Back characters. They really irritate me because of their tendency to make illogical decisions. "Oh, I will toss away a chance to save the entire universe just to be with you!"

Gah.

Ah yes - worth always trying the button mash just in case...

I remember getting to the end of Blood Money and thinking how tragic (but appropriate) the betrayal is. It cuts to the funeral, credits roll and the hitman is cremated - ending a fairly epic history after 4 games. Tragic.

Then playing through a second time and I mashed the keyboard trying to skip the credits and he suddenly wakes up on the casket in the middle of Ave Maria, surrounded by 40 guys with machine guns.

Anyone who finished Mass Effect right should know these words: "Goodbye Shepard. Thank you." Sent a shiver down my spine, especially with what happened immediately after.

Saren, both on Virmire and the Citadel. He was indoctrinated, he knew it, but couldn't do anything about it and had to think up ways to make himself believe he wasn't. Like "I've studied Indoctrination. The more control Sovereign exerts, the less capable the subject becomes. That is my saving grace. Sovereign needs me to find the Conduit, so my mind is my own. For now." After Shepard says he's a slave "No! Sovereign needs me!" The fact that he had to repeat it cemented in my mind the fact that he knew he was a slave.

Ignoring the scares of F.E.A.R, when I found out what ATC did to Alma, and especially Genevieve Arestied's nonchalance ("I think its time we buried the dead"), it infuriated me. Also from FEAR, Harlan Wade "Genevieve dug her own grave and is going to have to get comfortable in it. Don't be a fucking lap dog and jump in after her." Finally, also Wade "It is the nature of men ti create monsters... and it is the nature of monsters to destroy their creators." Sent a chill down my spine, 'cause you knew that he knew he was going to die.

Final Fantasy X, Lost Odyssey, and Mass Effect.

I love those games. But they're very sad at parts.

I must be suffering amnesia because I forgot about that one too.

When I found out what James had done I went from feeling sorry for him to actually loathing him for a while before finally reaching a point of understanding. That really put me through the emotional wringer.

Spoilers FF X to follow...
Did FF X really hit people that hard? For me it was one of those "crap, betrayed by the church... damn yunalesca is hard, she's so sure, but she's wrong." Not much more, I knew who the incarnation of sin was some 45 mins into it, so that wasn't big, zanarkand wasn't that big a surprise, but maybe that was just me, what part really touched you guys?
...Spoilers over

I really liked Final Fantasy VI, but it just didn't hit me much because I wasn't really rooting for the good guys when there was already a perfectly admirable (and by admirable I mean awesomely evil) villain. Kind of made me not care for Edgar or Shadow or whoever when I was just using them as a means to get to the fun.

Cave Story was fun, and probably would've struck a deeper chord if I wasn't emotionally numb. It's a given by now that my favorite character always dies.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance didn't have a strong story, but I felt rather bitter when I finished the Judge storyline at the end. Especially when I realized I'd officially finished everything. That was...depressing.

And The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages was also saddening because it had to have an end. It's not like I could play again, either, what with most of the game's cartridges dead to the world.

There were a few things in that game that just stuck something in me. The moment Kefka's theme played for the first time and I saw him I just knew "I am going to HATE this guy". Since that scene every appearance of him had filled me with rage, hate and disgust for him and the things he did, and any villan who can spark an admirable hatred and fear into the player is indeed an excellent villan.

Each characters individual story was quite charming as well. The origin of Terra, Celes' loss of hope, lock and shadows redemption, they all stuck a chord in me at some point. Not many other games had filled me with such emotion as 6 did.

Chrono Trigger was another emotionally striking game for the same reasons as 6.

I'm another one for COD4 playing as the dying nuke victim was pretty sad and the end aswell, I assume Soap died Either that or he passed out either way it was really well done.
Yah that was a really sad moment, especially if you go to the playground and hear the children laughing, that creeped the hel out of me. Also, it was the American that was in the explosion (I forget his name), Soap is the SAS guy you finish the game with, and yes the American dies, he gets listed as KIA.
Yea that's what i meant, I knew the american guy was in the explosion and got listed as KIA and Soap was the one you played as at the end. I probably should have been more clear.

Rule of Rose

Damn... after hours of frustrating game-play (it is a short game maybe ten hours) I got a lot of cathartic release from the main character beating the crap out of a seven year old. And that's just the "oh yeah!" moment. The game weaves a beautiful tragedy the cuts right down to the core. I still get chills just thinking about it.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Everything?

Final Fantasy 7. Aerith death, cry.

PS- You get to beat the crap out of the evil little girl in Rule of Rose? Excellent payoff.
