Deus Ex
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Those are the games that had the greatest influence on me.

Funny you should mention Planescape, actually, as i've recently been playing Alpha Protocol- which borrows quite a few elements from it. The adaptation of the story is the best i've seen in any game to date- MUCH better than that in Deus Ex (Which doesn't actually give you that many choices with regards to the story, so I don't know why people regard it so highly). Plus the game is just genuinely fun, which is all I want.

Above that, though, i'd probably say DJ Hero. Genuinely one of the best experiences i've had in gaming in the last few years- the setlist was perfect, the difficulty was just right- and with the release of the Domination Track pack, I can officially claim to be in the top 25 for something (Not counting all those RB1 vocals which I seemed to be the only one playing).

Thinking back.... Ultima - The Black Gate on the PC was the 1st game I remember that I was old enough (14 years old) to think about and enjoy on many levels. The sheer size of the game amazed me.

Then the original Resident Evil on the Playstation and the original Silent Hill on the playstation both completely blew my mind and I couldn't stop playing them

Also, Metal Gear Solid on the playstation.

Then Counter-Strike on the PC introduced me to FPS games in a big way.... when it came out I worked at an ISP in the UK and have very fond memories of staying behind at the end of work to play on our LAN against my colleagues.

Most recently Fallout 3 and Dead Space had me utterly hooked until I had completed them

Uncharted 2 was the first game I ever played on my shiny shiny new PS3 and I absolutely adore it. Good voice acting, lovely graphics, a thrilling Indiana Jones-esque story, it had all the right curves in all the right places.

Also FFX was the first rpg I ever played and when I got the end of that I had to dig for hours to get out of the amount of bricks that hit me.

Funny, I was clicking on this thread all set up to list PS:T. Glad to hear you've played it.

Lessee... Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura. Consider that a recommendation too, by the way, just patch the thing first.

When you meet Nasrudin, most of all.

Terranigma, especially towards the end. Portal. A certain scene in Bioshock (you know the one), multiple parts of Iji. The first two Penumbra games, especially the ending for each, but the games in general. Iji's even freeware.

By the way, all of these are PC games, except Terranigma, which is for the SNES. Have fun with that.

Nier.

The story to that game had me so damn hooked and on an emotional rollercoaster the whole time.

Lemme see here. Since you also seem to like older games:

Close combat (series): RTS at it's finest and maybe still is.
The Baldur's gate series: RPG bit like planescape, only a different setting.
Gangsters: a mix of RTS and turn-based.
Postal 2: Think this one you either like or hate.
Vampire the masquerade - bloodlines: Mix of RPG and FPS.

Blood Omen Legacy Of Kain. - At first I was just digging the whole zelda thing with vampires but the whole setting and atmosphere was just brilliant.

Warzone 2100, though at first it felt a bit crappy, once you start getting new techs it just gets amazing. Rotary Howitzers and Hyper Velocity cannons are just great. The sound effects in that game were spot on.

Dwarf Fortress - Enough said.

Ultima 7, I got into this very late but it is just a wonderful game.

There are so many but was trying not to name stuff that appears all over the board.

Oh Jagged Alliance

Total Annihilation. Revolutionary RTS for the time. People still play it. People still mod it. People still try to ressurect it.

Thief. Still among the best steath titles of all time.

Command and Conquor. The game that invented RTS (well, almost. I think Dune was before it? Not sure anymore).

Anything by BioWare/Black Isle. Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Dragon Age, Mass Effect 1 & 2 (and likely 3 as well).

Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor. Awsome game in a great series.

Diablo 1 & 2. 'Nuff said.

Fallout 1. Slow start but after getting the hang of it, wow it just drew me in and gave me a deeper and more engaging experience than anything I've played before or since. My only regret was playing it directly before Mass Effect.

I think Planescape: Torment may have the best game story, with the best protagonist, and the best characters of all time. I remember being disappointed when I learned that all the times I played with the model Modron made me chaotic and I couldn't use the ultimate weapon thingy because I was chaotic good, but it didn't hinder me in finishing the game.

Roller Coaster Tycoon.
The first one.
Also Corkscrew Follies and Loopy Landscapes, the expansions...
That was the most surprisingly fun game I played during my childhood (and I still open it up from time to time).

Any of the pre San Andreas GTA games.
Simply classic, especially 2 and III. That was back when Rockstar focused on the PC more, and modders began springing up...
Good times.

This happened to me with MechWarrior 4. I'd never played any of the previous games and had been a console-only gamer up to that point. At first the complex controls were irritating, but the premise of the game was enticing enough to steel my resolve of mastering them, and suddenly I was completely engrossed in the game, unable to stop playing.

Halo, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Portal, Oblivion and Otogi: Myth of demons.

All these games were instant jolts to my system as I became entranced by their greatness.
