Final Fantasy 8. From 7 (excellent) to 8 (horrible). The problem? They had too much success with 7 and had too much money and time to make 8.....and over-thought the hell out of it.

I had the horrible feeling when I was killed for the 3000th time by a sniper rifle from 3 feet away that the community of Call of Duty 4 is all that's going to be left someday.
I know it's getting on in age now and that more recent ones may have cut down on this "quick-scoping" crap, but it's still a nasty thought thinking that most multiplayer games are going to be left with no one but people who are too good at the game by mastering little more than an exploit.

Final Fantasy XII. Oh, but I'm not a hater. In fact, I really like FF12. But I sure as hell do know where it went wrong(you know, besides Vaan.)

First of all, what was FFXII? A decent offline-MMO. It did alright as a game, but it fell short of what it promised.
What did it promise?

EPIC AIRSHIP BATTLES!
OLDER, MORE MATURE MAIN CHARACTER!(Basch)
DEVELOPPED BY THE GUY WHO BROUGHT YOU FINAL FANTASY MOTHERFUCKING TACTICS!

So what went wrong? The head honcho quit. They took out the airship battles. They added Vaan.

God dammit Square...
How many times do they hafta fail before they wake up?
Well the guy who brought you FINAL FANTASY MOTHERFUCKING TACTICS is coming back for a Tactics Ogre remake, so that's a step in the right direction.

F-Zero GX.

It made itself out as an intense trilling racer, which is why it might be going to hell for lying, as it's so frustratingly and absurdly difficult, I swear that it's a torture device in disguise.

Dawn of War II.

The very definition of taking a spectacular game and completely ruining its mechanics.

I tried to very hard to love that game as I loved DoW I, but I'm sorry, it's an embarrassment to mankind. Worse than Soulstorm.

SPEESH MAHREENS, GET IN OUR METAL BAWKSES!
I can understand not liking the route they took with DoW2. I can understand being mad about them completley changing most of the games mechanics and moving away from the traditonal RTS format. I can get that.

But worse than Soulstorm? Are you serious?
...okay you're right that's absurd, I think passion just got the best of me.

bahahahahahaha, NOTHING is worse than Soulstorm. Relic...seriously. Come on. Did your once-spectacular voice-acting department suddenly boycott you or something? And who the hell thought FLYING UNITS were a good goddamn idea!?

Why......WHY. HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?

*sobs uncontrollably* I LOVED YOU, DAWN OF WAR! I LOVED YOU! BUT NOW YOU'RE OFF SCAMPERING ABOUT LIKE SOME INFERIOR COMPANY OF HEROES CLONE! I LOVED YOU AND YOU BETRAYED ME BY ABANDONING TRADITIONAL RTS MECHANICS. YOU'RE NOTHING! IT'S OVER. I HAVE STARCRAFT 2 NOW AND I NEVER HAVE TO SEE YOUR STUPIDLY DETAILED AND BEAUTIFUL CHARACTER MODELS AND HIGHLY AWESOME IN-GAME UNIVERSE AGAIN!

I hope you get a Bolter round to the face!

Deus Ex: Invisible War

I mean, seriously, what question other than "where did it all go wrong?" could you ask yourself about this game?

Oh, everyone knows where deus ex 2 went wrong...the dev's thought they could somehow compete with vanilla shooters and dump our asses, making a killing in profits.
And of course, this was stupid of them. The "people" who love the likes of halo over the original deus ex don't give a damn for complications of even DX: IW's depth.

I didn't say the question was unanswerable, just that it's the one that begs to be asked.

And you're right. They tried to expand their fan base toward the lowest common denominator while keeping the fans the original Deus Ex earned them—having their cake and eating it too—and ultimately ended up with something that appealed to neither.

Oh dear god Prototype... how did you screw that up so badly.

They just made it so sluggish and boring and unplayable...
I liked Prototype until the game started targeting things 20 blocks away instead of the giant monster standing right in front of me :(

For me, Damnation has to top this list. So bad....so very very bad.

Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts - so much potential, but it seems like a chore to play, and I'm glad I got it as part of a clearance controller package. With the restrictions on vehicles you can use and somewhat awkward controls there's a whole bunch of seeing what could have been, but it's rather mediocre compared to its potential (like the Wii).
