This is a 'scary' games thread and no one has mentioned Project Zero/Fatal Frame? For SHAME!

I still get freaked out playing Fatal Frame 2. The original has more jump-out scares but the second is the QUEEN of atmospheric games. (The king is still Silent Hill 2.)
I'd wish I could say Fatal Frame, but I only have a PC, so I cannot tell.
OT: Easily Silent Hill series and System Shock 2 for their atmosphere, probably the best I have seen yet.

I totally forgot that scene, plus the prison level in Thief 1 a few years ago. Those zombies really piss me off.

Hmmmmm.
Not really sure.

Only BioShock and Dead Space made me Jump.

Iv never really been scared that badly before by a game.
That one bit in Dead Space where the woman slits her own throat was BEYOND disturbing.
That was more WTF!? to me.

Now, the first time i saw the Tall Necromorphs that split into a horde of smaller Necromorphs after being shot was really disturbing.
I instantly used up all my Plasma Cutter ammo in a while frenzy...and i still didn't hit them all.

The Call of Cthulu computer game. I started playing around 11:00 PM with the lights off (figuring the middle of the night was most appropriate for Cthulu) and didn't make it past 2:00 AM. Still haven't managed to go back to it!

Me too, I'm kind of a sucker for those jump scares.
Ever played Doom 3? It's pretty much Jump Scare 3D Adventure.
I couldn't agree more, that game was full of cheap scares.
OT: Dead Space, I get startled easy, and the game was full of surprises.

Silent Hill 1 fuck my mind over with the opening gameplay. There's a skinned guy crucifyed on a barbed fence and then children come out at you with knives... and you have nothing to defend yourself with. 1999 was a hell of a year...

Silent Hill 2 is good, but SH 1 was better in my opinion only because I played it first. Sorry folks, Silent Hill 1 for me. And none of that remake/revival crap either.

I had the balls to try and complete all the Penumbra Series in the same night, in the dark, in my isolated house... never again... never again.

Also, what is about penumbra that makes it so scary, ive been finding that almost the whole internet says it is one of the the scariest games they've played. I know it has something to do with a guy trying to find his father or something, but that's all i know.

Plus you get to hear 2 or more guys scream like little kids while you play it, and that's always fun.

Majora's Mask. Horror games don't often scare me because I'm expecting monsters, blood, etc. but the plot of Major's Mask was so dark and twisted and the atmosphere so haunting it scared the shit out of me. It caught me completely off guard because it's a Zelda game which aren't really known for strong plot (argue that point if you must) or depth (Of course I don't mean gameplay-wise) but Majora dealt with very dark subject matter such as abandonment, isolation, corruption of the world and that terrifying moon that was always staring at you.

Echo Night: Beyond is the one and only game that managed to get my heart pumping.
I'm dying to play this game. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it anywhere in my state. :/

OT: Probably Haunting Ground for me when I first played it. It was my first survival horror game and it scared the crap out of me. xD

Dead space when you're backtracking you see things you thought were dead that you killed before then they come up. Scared the living shit into me.
That game was freaky I remember seeing this lady cuting this guy up who was alive with no skin while laughing after he died she laughed louder and cut her own throat with a saw. I realy shouldn't of been playing that game (being 13 at the time) hell I shouldn't play it now! (being 14)
