Games that should have been the next Halo, Super Mario, or Ocarina of Time, but weren't.

I don't know about mass appeal... but Metro 2033 should have gotten a lot more coverage.
Yesssss

This game was spectacular. It is an example of near perfect environment and atmosphere.

The Hitman games are huge, sure, but are they to Super Mario and Halo standards? I don't think to. They should be in my opinion.

Well, it is remembered and has fans, but TimeSplitters does deserve to be the next Halo.
TimeSplitters [1-3] definately. I plan on replaying them all soon as I get some free time.
I see what you did there.

I would say Timesplitters, but the ninja's have taken the stage...

Convince me :)

Give us reasons people!
Well, it's a solid shooter, with no power weapons. It has weapons from different times, even from the future. About 150 characters to unlock, good comedy, lots of customisaiton, and you can kill a monkey with a brick in a chinese restaraunt while playing as a snowman that walks by sitting on a flying carpet.

Blinx. That game should been Microsoft's Sonic or Mario. The only things that really ruined it were the steep difficulty curve in the second half of the game and the ugly cover art.

And Alan Wake. That isn't doing terribly but deserves to stand alongside Resident Evil and Silent hill as an equal rather than as a slow burning cult hit.

It had all the makings of a decent universe, and played very differently from your typical shooter. Fast, fun, varied.

But it's all dead now. Thanks to Vivendi Universal pulling all support for the game before even the first patch was released for Tribes Vengeance in a move that still baffles me to this day.
A bloody shame too, because I actually liked the story (well, up to a point, then it fell apart).
This. I love The tribes games. In my eyes, there better than Halo.

You know what? Fuck you, Starcraft. Fuck you for ruining what should have been Homeworld's heyday, for overshadowing it and making everyone else forget about it. Fuck you for creating the standard RTS formula and making everyone completely ignore Homeworld's many innovations in favour of your standard gameplay.

Homeworld should have been Relic's flagship series. It should have been held up as a paragon of the RTS genre and remembered by all as a classic. Instead, it and its vast stock of pure brilliance were left in the dust, and now are only known to a few people.

That's just bloody tragic.
This as well.

Henry Hatsworth. Nobody even heard of it, but it's a brillian DS puzzle platformer RPG.

Good show indeed...

Chibi Robo, he came along in the dwindling era of the Gamecube, and his game was one of the most creative and funny experiences I've had in a good long time.
And all he got was a crappy DS sequel that was only sold at Walmart

HE DESERVES BETTER, DAMN IT!

Conceptually perhaps but they never fully nailed the execution, unfortunately.

Mount&Blade and the sequal Mount&Blade Warband. The single-best combat in any game which requires a lot of skill (especially when dismounted without a shield). Truely open-world realistic medieval landscape. There is not main story quest, the story is whatever you want it to be. You have no set objective. If you want to be a merchant, do it. If you want to be a bandit, be one. If you want to start your own faction and take the place over, good luck but it can be done.

True. I guess the ones that hold it in such high regard are willing to look over the technical aspect of it. If you get the hang of it though it's a rewarding game.

Super Meat Boy. I know it's popular, but it's as addictive and even more infuriating than the later levels of any Mario game. The fact that its initials are SMB definitely give Mario a run for his money.

Dead Space was the next Resident Evil 4. Was more jumpy than scary, but on Impossible I have nearly screamed when I use my last round of Plasma Energy, find I have no more, and am faced by three Lurkers. That shit be freaky.

Still, Resident Evil 4 is my favourite game next to Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead 2 and Half Life 2.
