Skies of Arcadia and Deus Ex. Not a lot of people really care about them in this day and age.
Never heard of the former, but this picture is here for a reason:

Thanks. That brightens up my day. At least SOME people prefer it to Call of Duty and other things.

Skies of Arcadia is my favourite JRPG of all time, at least until I play a better one. I played the 'Legends' version for the Gamecube, mind you, but it's still better than most FF titles.

Deus Ex...
idk. Deus Ex isn't for everyone. I love it, but the stealth definately needs improvement.
Not for everyone? Well, it definitely weeds out the people completely new to video games, and it doesn't have fantasy or RTS or racing elements, but it has a wide variety of gameplay that allows for any approach. Who says you need to use stealth? I do, but you can storm right in with a flamethrower if you want.

It's definitely not perfect, definitely not. I have yet to find a perfect game, but I search. The lockpicking, bypassing and hacking mechanics consist of pointing at something and clicking a button maybe once or twice and are about as engaging as clicking an OK button. Also, the enemy doesn't have the presence of mind to climb a ladder or open the ventilation shaft that I just sneaked through.

But while most games say 'This is what you must do', Deus Ex says 'what do you want to do?'

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! A reckless Disregard for Gravity. It's fun as hell, has a great core concept, and should be way more popular than it is, but is sadly relegated to the realm of fairly unknown indie games on Steam.

Heavy Rain.

Yeah, I know, I'm talking about this game all the time, deal with it.

Seriously though, this is the first time, a video game made people care for their characters. In every other game, it's "Damn, I got shot/got stabbed/fell into a pit/lost my leg/whatever, Quickload, and let's kick their ass this time'. You don't care to take cover, because there is a heath bar/regenerating life. You don't care about dead companions, because you have Phoenix Down or they are just nameless NPC.

And then comes Heavy Rain, where every encounter (well, at least in the late game) IS a fight for your life, and believe me, YOU WILL throw your controller all over the place (whether it is necessary or not), just be sure, you'r character WILL avoid nasty death, thanks to a car crusher or something similar.

And if somehow you'll fail... Well tough luck, the game goes on. It's not over yet, you have 3 other characters continuing their story. And you care EVEN MORE for them.

Seriously, that car crusher moment mentioned earlier, gave me more goosebumps and shaky hands moments than Silent Hill 2 and Amnesia combined. I even stopped playing the game for that day, when another char found himself in a death threatening situation after seeing the consequence of the last screw up.

Amazing, simply amazing. I wish more game were like that.

well i wanted to do stealth but the damn cloak is sooo costly, and so is silent running. also stun rod ammo gets pretty scarce towards the middle

Deadly Rooms of Death [http://forum.caravelgames.com/viewsitepage.php?id=90294]

A small indie game that built puzzles out of monster encounters, with enough variety that the first game had 25 different level themes, and later had a level editor added so players could make their own. Seriously, if you like puzzle games, you have to try this one.

Unreal Tournament 3. It took everything I loved from UT 99 and 04 and put them together. Sadly arena combat just didn't catch on as much.

You know what? Fuck you, Starcraft. Fuck you for ruining what should have been Homeworld's heyday, for overshadowing it and making everyone else forget about it. Fuck you for creating the standard RTS formula and making everyone completely ignore Homeworld's many innovations in favour of your standard gameplay.

Homeworld should have been Relic's flagship series. It should have been held up as a paragon of the RTS genre and remembered by all as a classic. Instead, it and its vast stock of pure brilliance were left in the dust, and now are only known to a few people.

That's just bloody tragic.
You see, that's just plain unfair. You're making StarCraft out to be a bad game when it isn't. While StarCraft may not have been super innovative for the time, its pitch perfect execution is what keeps it on people's good books.

OT - To all the people who say Dues Ex, I salute you.

Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2. these games where pure works of genius. Honestly Peter Molyneux needs to find a way to get the rights for these back and make Dungeon keeper 3 already.
I mean the games were fun and challenging. Playing as the bad guys and building the dungeon was a great idea, and once you got to some of the later levels you really had to stop and think how you where going to tackle each problem. What rooms you where going to build first to attract which creatures needed to keep away from which so your forces wernt picking fights, making sure to pay them on time. plus the humor was great and dark. and honestly who didnt set up a casino for the hopes of hearing "Disco Inferno" playing throughout your dungeon and watching your minions disco dance?

In other words, games that deserved mass appeal, fans, and deserved to be remembered for years later on...

But weren't.

For me, I'd say Borderlands and Spore.

Spore was one of the most abitmous and interesting games ever, and it hardly gets any attention. it has the best customization and creation tools for a game, no contest, has an ENTIRE, FULLY EXPLORABLE GALAXY, and (had, as of the last time I checked before I lost my saves and played the game *sad*) near endless user base.

Borderlands has over a trillion weapons, literally. It's freaking Fallout X Diablo X Halo!
Boarderlands for sure, Spore though? really? as a player of Civ 2-5, Most RTS, Sins of a solar empire, Galactic civilizations, and simcity and such, spore is a HUGE Letdown. Don't get me wrong, great idea but it failed. everything else is a prologue to the space part really, and once you get there you will find yourself repeating the same sets of quests and what not. It tried to be great but fell short in every aspect, other than the massive ammounts of creations you could make (aside from the fact it was slightly undermined by the fact the would all function in smiler ways). very fun game but hardly lived up to the best.

I'd have to say Zone of enders, Persona 3, sky's of Arcadia, and i must add, The Tales of Series, All of 'em, they did fine but they should have been huge.

take your pick of any game that sucked, because id much rather my favorites stay under-appreciated than become massively popular and completely ruin everything good about it to appeal to the screeching child demographic.

The Jet Set Radio series.
It was about an original videogame concept, It had really ridiculously good music, and it was just amazingly fun.

I would say Borderlands if they got PVP right because that game's pretty underrated.

YES. Skies of Arcadia's one of my favorite rpgs of all time, and Deus Ex...depends on which one we're talking about. From what I'm seeing with the new one tho, it could be a return to its roots. :)

Other than that, I love Henry Hatsworth, and maybe, just maybe GunGrave. That game was wonderful. I personally hope that the Parasite Eve series picks up again with this sequel as well, because they really added to why I love the PSX so much.

Dues Ex (amazing, I picked it up the PS2 port for $4 and I spent about 2 hours on the same level trying to complete all the different things people would tell me to do instead of going to the main objective, lol, I have to get back to that game) and the time splitters series, a game that lets you make your own levels, offers amazing multiplayer, and has a guy dressed as a lion as a playable character you know it rules

The System Shock series.
Seriously! How had I never heard of this game before coming to the escapist?
LOL same story over here.
I actually had a demo of System Shock 2 that I played when I was much younger. Made me get the whole game and I loved it! Then I totally forgot about it until I came here!
