Games that should have been the next Halo, Super Mario, or Ocarina of Time, but weren't.

You put those three games up like no one would ever argue that they're the best of the best...lol

-I've never really liked Mario, ever! Even in the 80s when I was nine.

-Halo is probably the blandest shooter I've ever played. I'd play Fear 2 before I'd play Halo or any of its incarnations.

-And as for Zelda:OOT, well, I never played it, and I'm pretty sure it's too late to be blown away by it now...=/

Sorry, but two out of three of those franchises irk the fuck out of me...-_-

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. This is vampires without that gimpy, bullshitty twilight wank. Great story, fantastic level design (Like deus ex there wasn't just one route to your goal and being week never meant you couldn't win in a fight), Chosing your character mattered, choosing what you said mattered, the morale questions were great, brilliant sense of humour, too bad about the bugs but god I wish Troika were still putting out games. This should be a staple of gamer culture by now.
I have to agree, Vampire the Masquerade were good games, Bloodlines and Redemption, Bloodlines was off course beter because of the setting and variable gameplay. The reason it didn't get such a great following is (in my opinion) because the game never got finished, they had to bring out an unofficial patch to unlock a lot of unused content, same with KOTOR 2, it's a fantastic game but it never got finished and that's a damn shame

In my opinion the latest Super Mario should've been the next Ocarina Of Time, instead it was merely a Halo.

While I don't think they had/have the potential to be the next Mario/OoT/Halo (what an odd grouping), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Psychonauts, and Beyond Good & Evil are all underrated.

Speaking strictly for myself, they all had good stories, characters I actually cared about that broke the typical game hero/heroine mold, fun gameplay (well, not so much for ED), and a sense of real satisfaction once completed. Even though they did't have much in the way of replay value (for non-completionists), I still found myself playing them over and over.

Rogue Galaxy! A great ps2 rpg that deserved more than it got. Great story and graphics. Gameplay was also good and you had a ton of things to do.Pity it got overshadowed by games like Persona and FF (they´re pretty good too)

I'd say Jade Empire.

I see so much love for Mass Effect and Dragon Age yet almost none for the awesomeness that is Jade Empire. It's the old Firefly and Mortal Engines deal, good Eastern and Western hybrid steampunk adventures simply don't get money and recognition.

Because the gameplay was annoying and samey, in places also just plain bullshit (elephant demons). If they made a sequel with a better combat system I would definitely buy it.

Chibi Robo, he came along in the dwindling era of the Gamecube, and his game was one of the most creative and funny experiences I've had in a good long time.
And all he got was a crappy DS sequel that was only sold at Walmart

HE DESERVES BETTER, DAMN IT!
This. I had hours of fun playing it.

I don't know about mass appeal... but Metro 2033 should have gotten a lot more coverage.
Metro is great, and the book is also really enjoyable as well, if you're able to find it. I think I'd go with Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, though. God damn that game was fun.
Ok, maybe one of you can help explain to me what the big appeal of Metro was. I bought it, played it twice for both endings, enjoyed it, and sold it all in the span of a week. It wasn't a bad game by any means, but I'm reading your comment and a million others I've seen like it, and I just apparently missed the big point of the game.

I thought the story was great (I loved the book, by the way), but very poorly told. The gameplay didn't really stand out. Really, I think the only thing it did well (and it did it very well, I'll admit) is atmosphere.

Again, I did enjoy the game. It certainly made my wait time for Fable 3 go by a lot quicker, but it isn't going to be a game I remember a few years down the road.

Okami got a 'greatest hits' re-release on the PS2. And it's getting a sequel. And it was also ported to the Wii, which currently has no "greatest hits" re-releases, but I imagine if it did Okami would be there as well.

I'm just saying, is all.

It was a large combination of things really... honestly reading the book has actually made me enjoy the game more but I read the book after I first played the game so that's beside the point.

Metro had an amazing story, with just enough information to get by and it touched upon Sci Fi/Supernatural/Religion/Segregation/Political turmoil... now maybe I was reading too much into it, but all of that in this amazing setting with near perfect atmosphere... it just made the game insanely enjoyable.

It's not for everyone, and I'm not saying everyone should enjoy it and the story, but a lot of people agree it has a great story, and I've lost myself in the vast ocean of trying to explain Metro... I'm going to stop with, if you like books then you should buy the Metro book, it might help your enjoyment of the game, and if not it's a damn good read anyway.
