There has never been a good videogame based movie made and there never will be. The last conversation I had about this with my friends brought up the fact that one of my friends actually considered the movie "Doom" to be decent. Needless to say, I don't talk to him anymore.

But seriously:

Wing Commander
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter
Doom
Tomb Raider (I know someone is going to argue with me on this but it isn't a good movie you just think it is because Angelina Jolie is stunning. Ask a woman, she will be able to see past this feature and explain exactly how bad this movie truely is)

What do these movies all have in common? They suck and so will a Halo (insert any game name here) movie, it's not like the story is that great, even for a game.

Believe it or not, I'd say that it doesn't really matter to me which games they chose.
No.
I'm serious.
What matters to me is *WHO* makes the movies.
I'd love to see a japanese studio make a movie based on a videogame, it cannot possibly end up being any worse results than Uwe Boll, can it? Or most of the completely americanized versions of action flicks being caughed out on the silver screen every month.

Street Fighter the animated movie comes to mind, while far from perfect it is a sublime vision on the Street Fighter franchise and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Just don't let the boys with deep pockets buy game licenses all the bloody time, give it to some japanese people with some freedom to design.
I know that people will tell me that they ruined FInal Fantasy, but hey, at least they didn't shit out bricks, did they?

Totally agree, any game movie has sucked big time and i don't even know what there doing making a Halo game, I'll go see it just to see if they may suprise me which i doubt, i have a feeling master chief and alien friends are going to look as crappy as the previous Hulk movie on the big screen and there is more amusing things then watching a big badly computer generated green thing tear through california like for instance ripping out your own eyes from there sockets. The only hope i can see is the Max payne movie which i've only really got hope for because i like the game and i seriously pray they don't mess it up.

Anything that Uwe Boll expressed interest in making. Why does that guy hate video games so much that he has to butcher them on his straight to DVD releases?

As much as I say "leave it as a game", I think it is pretty much a given that Bioshock will be made into a movie (even if it's just to give a big FU to EA) and if that is to happen at least it should be done by a director who will respect the material and the skills to pull it off.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
wow, that was... inaccurate. Isn't he supposed to be a kid when he meets zelda?
and gannondorf looked like shit.
I'm suspicious, they posted it April 1st and it comes out April 1st, am I the only one who thinks this might be a joke?

Edit: there's also no IMDb listing. thank god for pranks.
Also i think that making an Indigo Prophesy movie would be a bit redundant.
It better be a joke, otherwise it will be a catastrophic disaster when it comes out (IF it comes out).

None of us have to worry about Half Life 2 becoming a movie because Valve said they've been approached by people in the movie industry numerous times and they've rejected all of them. They're reasoning is because they've never seen a game benefit from having it's own movie, and they're damn right.

No one should EVER make a Portal movie.
Oh yeah, neither should they make a Smash Bros. or a Rock Band.

see Alien vs Predator for example
The AvP movie wasn't based off the game(s). The script wasn't even remotely connected to the game(s).

Not trying to be rude, but you do know that the concept of AvP exists in other mediums besides the two PC games?

In addition to the arcade game(s?), there is a very long history of AvP mini-series comic books.

Including the ones (sorry, the name escapes me atm) that the first movie took a couple plot elements from (specifically the woman who gets the mark of the predator she assisted).

While I agree that AvP1 (and 2) could've been better (far better, given the amount of source material to draw from), but you cannot really classify them as "video game movies" since they aren't.

Lol i was waiting for the end of it to see the release date, and "yeah this is a joke" was the first thing that came to mind. I will say this though, they did a good job of atleast making it look good visually, so it atleast looked like it could be real.

There are plenty of legitimate complaints about The Spirits Within, but it kinda gets to me when people complain that it wasn't based on the Final Fantasy games. With the exception of Final Fantasy 7 and Tactics (which should be considered their own, independent franchises) the games aren't even based on the games. It looked pretty and there was a guy named Cid, congratulations it's a Final Fantasy.

I think part of the problem is the attempts to adapt the stories. Some games would serve as better inspirations for films than straight adaptations. Take Silent Hill for example. You can pick up nearly any installment in the game series, play it without ever playing the previous games, and you'll get through the story just fine. My first exposure was through Silent Hill 3, the only direct sequel in the series, and I never felt like I was missing out on backstory. The Silent Hill series isn't so much a story as a mythos, relatively unrelated stories are tied together by central themes rather than a broad narrative. Had they used this mythos as the basis for an entirely original movie I might have enjoyed the Silent Hill film more. Instead they tried to make an adaptation and I feel the movie was weaker for it.

But I think some games could possibly work on television. Half-life and Half-Life 2 probably wouldn't make for good films, but I could picture a Half-Life 2 based TV series. The production budgets may not be as impressive, but you get hours more time to work the story.

I know the previous readers and writers bashing and praising the Spirits Within movie won't come back and read what I'm about to write, but I'll write it anyway. I'm going to say right now, the movie was meant to be called Gaia: Spirits Within as a movie that was meant to show the importance of the Earth (hence Gaia). Now, onto my argument.

People who were mad at it for not being a Final Fantasy "thing" whether it be a direct movie or whatever should reassess what Final Fantasy is. Has there ever been a direct RPG sequel to any of the games that hasn't had the prequel attached to it some how? See ---> Final Fantasy X (2) <--- attached.
So what we know about Final Fantasy games is that none of them are linear, they don't precede each other, they don't lead on to new things, they're essentially stand alone games. I could take Final Fantasy 6 as an example, change it's name to Kefkapalooza and change Cid's name to Roderick and you'd have a stand alone game.
This is how the movie operated, if you ignore the fact that it wasn't meant to have Final Fantasy tacked on it. It was a stand alone movie with fresh characters (however clichéd their desires and story may have been) and thrust it all into a sci-fi world. Okay, now that that rebuttal is done.

I nearly shat myself at the Zelda trailer until the end with the release date. I wonder if IGN will follow up with something next April Fool's as a continuation of this one. Perhaps a dodgey 10 minute movie? I'd watch it, but then again, I have no life. (See the earlier part of this post for proof.)

I do, however, wonder what it would be like to see a movie done for either a stand alone Breath of Fire (excluding 5, only because it didn't make sense compared to the other 4) or an adaptation of one of the games, or maybe a mixture of adaptations of the entire story into a stand alone title. I think it would work quite well if done by the right person (Not Uwe Boll), and I think it would only work well with Beowulf-esque animation. I must say, I was impressed with the visuals of that movie.

And for my vote for Game that Shouldn't be a Movie....Earthbound aka Mother 2. I really don't want to see one of the better years of my childhood ravaged into anything but fan movies on You Tube.

Edit: Someone beat me to the Final Fantasy issue. Damned be to you! But at least I'm not alone.

A few thoughts:...

Most of the people who make movies based on videogames have two ideas in mind.

1. Appeal to the groups who play the games.
And unfortunately
2. Let's change it up to make it cooler!

The problems are that the movie loses appeal to the fanboys who played the games when directors mix things up and the movie becomes not mixed up enough to be good.

Here's what I mean if it's confusing:
Example: Legend of Zelda Fools day trailer
Link goes into town and gets himself locked away for seven years. Fair
Link needs the Triforce/Master Sword to fight Ganondorf. Fair enough
Watch Link go through 8 dungeons and collect crap for the rest of the movie. NO!!! STOP!!

If they gave it a new plotline where Link didn't need the M-Sword or go through bunches of dungeons I'd think it was great. Take away the stupid hat since it dose'nt look good on screen. Go ahead and make it live action. Get a halfway decent director suited to the genre.

The problem is that when you must mix up v-game movies to make them good they lose what makes them recognizable as the games we love. So at this point you might as well change up the names and make a brand-new movie

Super Mario Brothers was AWSOMENESS SQUARED. You take your lies and slander elsewhere, you... you... something something!

On a more serious note, have you watched the Resident Evil movies? Sure, they arent epic oscar worthy filmmaking, but they do stand on their own as action movies (I was never one for the games myself), and they use the video game quite well.
Well, yeah I have to admit Super Mario Bros. was pretty funny (I had some serious laughs with it) but I hated Resident evil (I only saw the 1st one though).

Uwe Boll works a little known German Tax route that allows him to recover all costs from his films and get paid, NO MATTER how bad they are. (And they all stink worse than Gorgonzola)

He's also a professional boxer...
