The most recent example I can think of is Dead Space. It started of great, but someone turned into an action game during the middle. The few scares it had were gone, and it turned into a "find this, kill everything, find something else" type of game. That's actually what the entirety of the game is to me, but it was more interesting in the beginning. So now that I stopped whining, what game started off great for you, but got worse?

Gears of War 2.
It's all fine and dandy, but the Jacinto assault was way too hard without a human partner, and the end 'boss' was the most dissapointing pile of crap ever. Besides Fable 2's 'boss'.

I had fun playing through the No More Heroes tutorial level but once I was spit out into the awful sandbox things fell apart completely. That game got me renting again.

A few games i played kinda just trailed off and i never finished them. I'm talking assassins creed, no more heroes... every metroid prime game...

Oh and Far Cry 2.
Half way through when i realised that the game was just a copy/pate of the first half, glued together with a desert.

Fable and Fable 2. Both started off good, but then got real boring. Never finished either one.

I would have to say crysis, it was fun while you fought the Koreans.
And interesting when you met the aliens, but then it became to much and you coulnd't play around with the aliens, like you could with the Koreans.

The nurse part was really scary, and it was about half-way through. And the ending was...*shudders*

But yeah, the overall scariness of the game dropped about half-way through the game.
