What game has managed to put you off playing it at midnight, has made you jump with fright and at your fear has made your friends snigger with delight?

Sorry for the atrocious rhyming, but really, which games have the ingredients for the greatest interactive horror ever?

Echo Night: Beyond.

No weapons, in a bulky spacesuit, with only your heart rate monitor and the voices of the dead to keep you company, trying to survive your stay in a foggy outpost on the Moon.

Yes, foggy. On the Moon. It's messed up.

I am too jumpy of a person to play survival horror games or even games like doom 3, the mood mixed with random stuff popping out of nowhere is too much for me.

the original condemned, I don't like the homeless even when they aren't trying to bash in my head with a bit of pipe, when they come crawling out of a hole in the ground it's damn scary! That being said... great game!

Dead Space.

I haven't played it in a month because I know it'll just shit me up. I'm at the part after the medical station. I got past that part, thought "what the fuck", and turned it off... in a good way.

STALKER: SoC still gives me nightmares from time to time. It's just so bleak, and the bloodsuckers..ooh.

When I was a kid, however, it was Ocarina Of Time. Tell me you weren't scared by the zombies!

Or the thing in the wall....
The Shadow Temple still scares the crap out of me. The music is haunting.

Also: Resident Evil 4 on Pro mode. Lack of ammo makes it scarier.

F.E.A.R.

Mainly because you were powerless in those situations.
The ladder scene especially scared the shit out of me.

the second one kind of ruined that, turning what could have been scary scenes into quicktime events.

Developers:
A game isn't fucking scary if I can kill everything that comes at me.

Also, the bear from Condemned.

Holy shit that was scary.

The Suffering had it's "Oh my god i've pissed myself" moments

As did Fallout 3 and Borderlands.

having said that I have a friend who during the first Resi Evil game in the L shaped corridor, the dogs came through the window, he screamed, threw his controller down and dove behind the sofa. This was at 1am and he was 28 at the time. He still hasn't lived it down.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG. The game didn't frighten me, but the new insight it brought to how society deals with hysteria certainly did.
