Have you ever played a game before and had way more fun than you usually do but didn't know why? Maybe it was a game that looked droll and bland on the first glance, but was fun and exciting once you got into it.

For me, this game was Puzzle Pirates. It was kid friendly, simple, and stupidly entertaining. I've never really been able to put my finger down on what exactly made it so great. It could of been the whole talking like a pirate thing, or the laughs I had with my crew mates. It had a just enough silliness to make it a game I would remember. Oh, and the actual puzzles were pretty fun too.

So what are your stories of games that were way to bad-ass than they should of been?

First reply is mine!

Age of empires 2 was my second RTS, and when I set up my first bait and snare tactic and it worked, I was so happy I had to pause the game because I couldn't play again for a minute. I was 7 at the time, and I got to light-headed with happiness at my first tactical success (it was a lot harder to pull off than you may thing) I thought for a second I was floating, oddly enough after I calmed down I landed on my chair, so I actually stood up without realizing it because I was so happy.

P.S. Welcome to the escapist my good fellow.

Starcraft. I got it last weekend (late to the party, I know) and I've been loving it. Just today my friend lent me ME2, as well, and I was torn on what to play!

Also, welcome to the Escapist.

Plants vs. Zombies. The concept seems horrendously casual-gamer oriented, but I found myself being sucked in. I've played through it 3 times now. ^_^

Roller Coaster Tycoon.
Seriously, that game is way more fun that it looks...

Also Multiwinia...
A friend showed it to me and I thought I'd never have a copy of it on my computer...
That first game sealed the deal though...

Peggle amused me far more than I expected, I couldn't stop playing!

Though after losing once I felt so defeated, but I guess that's part of its awesomeoness.

Puzzle Quest for sure.

the very idea of an RPG where all you do is play bejeweled seemed laughable to me.

and then I played, it and became addicted.

Everyone in my house was addicted to it for about a month. It was often being played on 3 different platforms in the house at any one time.

FreeSpace for me. I recall getting it, and from descriptions thinking it was just a StarCraft knockoff. I was new to computer games and pretty close-minded back then. Then I played it. Many hours. And discovered how stupid I was.

Peggle also jumps to mind, in this case as a game I understood. And was boggled by. Now I can play it for hours...

I watched a friend play a demo to that and the physics are horribly horribly wrong, and yet it looks fun.

Those two words, in that arrangement, do not mean anything. At all. A modal verb cannot precede a preposition. I'm not being a grammar Nazi, but I am trying to stop you from getting funny looks from anybody with a university education.

Anyway, aside from that, Oni has always been the perfect underdog game to me. I don't think anybody remembers it, but it was definitely a diamond in the rough. It was the game Bungie made before Halo, too; they should have made a sequel instead of spawning that retarded trilogy.

Demons Souls. What looks like a boring and very unforgiving RPG (one from Japan so it is technically a JRPG, only more westerny than anything) in videos is a very addictive masterpiece. I have beaten it at least 15 times and have near 300 hours in it.

Also Gundam Crossfire. Rated poorly, videos didn't look that interesting, etc. It was only $7 at GameStop so I decided to give it a try. I loved it. Twas the best $7 game of all time. I am a big Gundam fan, which might be why I liked it so much and very few others did.

THIS. The concept sounds incredibly ridiculous, but for some reason it just hooks you in. Not to mention the theme song is corny as hell and yet strangely catchy. I played through it 3 times and completed pretty much all the mini-games and challenge modes before I finally got bored of it.

I'd say Robotech: Battlecry. The ending was epic, and the transformations were all useful. Hard to pull off for a transforming robot game. The story was entertaining, but not deep at all. The soundtrack rocked, however.

I don't think the term 'modal verb' would be used by someone who is not a grammar Nazi or a linguistics specialist, heh.

Portal. I didn't see that coming at all.
I thought it was gonna be some shitty puzzle game I got for free.
Oh, how blissfully wrong I was.

Team Fortress 2. Oh, look, a pack-in with my copy of Portal. It's supposed to be good, but I never play online, because if I wanted to get cheap-shotted a thousand times I can just up the difficulty offline. Well, here goes nothing.

[bonesaw to the face] Take THAT, you dumb spy! This is AWESOME!
