To really get back on topic (many people are naming games that ARE meant to be scary, like Condemned and Fear 2):

I got really freaked out by the Meat King level in Hitman: Contracts. There's this big guy in a room with blood and flowers where a girl I hung upside down with her eyes cut out. In the meantime 'Put your hands on my shoulders' by The Platters is playing. Eerie.

Oh, and when I opened a dumpster in Police Quest:The Kindred
There was this dead boy lying there
It really took my breath away, dang!

Spyro. Yes, I'm currently hanging my head in shame. In the first or second one or something there's this part where you have to follow some down syndrome wannabe spy to find his 'spy hideout' or whatever. At certain moments he'll turn around to see if anyone is following him; at which times you have to hide behind a tree. If he spots you there is this sudden screeching sound as he turns around and points at you and just fucking stares with an ill-fitting look of glee on his face. I used to plee to my brother that he do this part for me because it scared me so much. But then again, I was only about 6.

I'm making this post after playing a game a friend gave to me which seemed to be a normal tactical shooter he insisted it was a awesome game SWAT4, i gotta say going into it i was thinking oh yeah this is good and the first level was standard arrest these guys and secure the guns.

come the second mission you had to apprehend a serial killer after its believed he has a girl kept in his house, the briefing doesnt bode well for the mission as it describes in detail what he does to the girls he takes, on to the mission i decided to take the stealthy route and go through the garage the garage sets is a indication that the rest of this mission isnt going to be too pleasant for you, glass cages filled with dead rats were piled high in this room, i go through a door and break into his bedroom which is plastered with newspapers stating his killings and pictures of the ones he killed and to quote the black guy in the squad "holy shit man ive got a bad feeling about this", you then go into the room adjoined where there are more newspaper clipping s on the walls and theres mannequins and papier mache masks hanging from the cieling, and on a filthy bed is a woman restrained wearing what seems to be a porcelaine mask though it isnt the one your looking for, you then have to carry on into what seems like a makeshift tunnel into a iron box underground, as soon as you go through into the iron room you see the killer holding a shotgun to the head of the crying woman whos covered in blood and filth, i didnt kill the serial killer though i was doing shit by the books.

The only thing that made this worse was the fact his mother who was upstairs when the killings had happened kept repeating hes a good boy hed never hurt a fly. that mission scared me more than any horror game has in the last few years, probably cos murderers are real and monsters arent and that scenario has probably happened somewhere.

So what games that werent supposed to be scary scared the beslubber out of you.
Swat 4 was pretty awesome as far as tactical shooters go though, i remember that part and saying "what the fu...???"

GET DOWN!
DROP THE GUN!
GET DOWN!
BANG! (oh well, i tried :p)

Alien Vs. Predator 2, playing as the humans... because you are such a week little nothing compared to a predator or an alien. I would start to freak out anytime the motion sensor would go off, and every now and then you could hear the predator but not be able to see him. Creeped me out.

Cannot wait for the next one. It looks quite bad ass.

Mirror's Edge is the scariest game ever... No really, it is.

Get chased by the Runner-Cops is probably the scariest moment in any game, in my opinion.
I wouldn't call it scary, but it was definately some of the highest tension I have felt in a game in a while. One of the few games that actually could give you an adenaline rush.
