Red and blu are at war, that's pretty much the story. Just like every other war game.

Nine mercenaries have come together for a job. It's the middle-ish part of a century a lot like the one we just had. A simpler time. There are three TV stations, one phone company, and two holding corporations that secretly control every government on the planet. Each corporation administers its half of the world with a multi-disciplined army of paper pushers. For any problem lacking an obvious bureaucratic solution, mercenaries like these are contracted to address the situation through a massive application of force.
It's cheesy, but it's meant to be. Also, L4D has something of a story, even though it
is flimsy and isn't a factor in the game. Rabies-like virus turns humans into mindless violent killing machines, and makes fat guys explode.
As for games with no story, I present you the game I somehow can't seem to shut up about: Red Orchestra (although it probably applies to MP-only shooters in general to some degree). It's basically "Krauts vs. Ivan, pick a class (e.g. weapon), go shoot guys, try not to get shot and cap certain arbitrary points". Especially on some of the custom tank maps - one of the most common ones (Debrecen B2) is literally
nothing else than a massive swathe of rolling grassy hills with a few outcrops of trees and one clump of 6 houses in the centre called the "village".
Also, I consider Unreal Tournament III to be without a story. Yes, I know it has a singleplayer campaign, but I refuse to consider that utter mind-numbing piece of shockingly stupid lameness a story.
Garry's Mod would be an obvious example, and a major cop-out.
Depending on the way you look at it, the Civilization games have either no story at all, or one of the biggest stories ever.
