Most older puzzlegames (and some new ones too) lack a story, but doesn't make them at all.

Alot of the games mentioned in here is said to have "no story at all"-syndrome, but without a story, you have no goal, and with no goal, the main charater wouldnt be shooting zombies/ninjas/pirates/mokies (i can refer to ZP too \o/).

A story is not always Metal Gear Solid thrown in your face type.. Lets take, erm, any Civ game, basicly the story is "you're elected leader of a tribe, now settle down and expand", the gameplay -is- the story, are you a military dictator or a diplomatic democrate?

Sometimes you tell the story, and not the game.

And saying WoW have no story what so ever is an attention span problem imo, if you care to read the quests (while autorunning to the things to kill) every zone have atleast 4+ story lines going on.

Racing games have a story, thin as it may be.. You wanna be an awesome racer, but to do that you need cars, and to get cars you need money... Go race and win money, simple ;)

Again, let me return to an above post metioning he doesn't wanna play the first 5 games of a series to understand the story (WoW again)... Then what the hell do you expect? Take out 10 years of writing and then claim there to be no story?.. please..

And well, for MMOs not having a main story, they kiiiinda do, I know it takes some imagination to imagine -you- as the main hero along with your raiding mates, but when playing Final Fantasy, at the end of the day, you still measure you attacks in X damage and Y recharge time...

Most games tell a story, be it simple like "Demons there, save world" or MGS cutscene én mass.. Its a story none-the-less.

Plants vs Zombies has story, you can read descriptions of all the zombies, isn't that qualified as story? ;)
I could read descriptions the type of tea I'm planning on drinking, doesn't mean they have a plot/narrative. (I'm thinking about tea, thus a tea example was given.)

In gaming terms you can read the descriptions of the rollercoasters in Rollercoaster Tycoon, Doesn't mean it has a story. :p

Any MMO, really. They can try to have a story, but who the hell actually pays attention to that after level 10. I'm there to kill shit, dammit. To hell with your 'story.'

Also, Sims. My version: You are a sad, lonely, misanthropic god. Here are some people to fuck with. Have fun.
Hopefully the MMO storytelling will change with the Old Republic. But on topic: hmmm well I can only name games that have kind of a story but its completely irrelevant. God of War anyone?

Half-Life 2 definitely has an expansive story, but the essential trope is pretty much true; there's zero exposition of it, and everyone assumes you know what's going on. Yahtzee's comment about the walrus at dinner was spot on.

But Plants Vs Zombies does have a story. There's a zombie on the lawn. You don't want zombies on the lawn. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N1_0SUGlDQ]

But if I'm not wrong, it explains why some zombies are like they are, and why some aren't. :p
I'm reading them now, and they give a slight (humorous) background.

Anyone saying Plants vs Zombies has a story needs to acknowledge that Team Fortress 2 has a story as well, they are on par with the minimalist amount of narrative needed. (Just.)

Because I say Team Fortress 2 does, I suppose ill have to grant PvZ the same honor. :p

That's an objective... Fine, every game ever has a story. EVER.

I'm almost tempted to say all Mortal Kombat games after MK: Trilogy, because the plot in each game was so insultingly stupid that it doesn't constitute as much of a plot. The first three were fight to save the world; straightforward, nothing special (but that's how you want it in a game were the point is to brutally kill others, there isn't much of a need for a real plot), but then they had to go and try to build a real story. It was just dumb. I mean, in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the story had "progressed" so far, that the "plot" was a huge war in the middle of a desert, while two dick brothers run around trying to decide who is to stop the war.

So screw it, Mortal Kombat 4 / Gold, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and of course, the cherry on top, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

MK vs. DC's plot was just flat out stupid. In two separate universes, both Shao Khan and Darkseid are imprisoned in some form of portal, at the SAME time, causing them to fuse together to form Dark Kahn, which causes everyone to go crazy and conjoins the MK world and the DC universe. How does two people fusing into one person cause two universes to fuse together? How does that make the slightest bit of sense?

That being said, I still enjoyed the actual gameplay of most MK games.

Outrun. It's basically... here's a ferrarri, here's a sun-soaked american city (setting), you got your hot girlfriend riding shotgun (characters)... now go nut-shit crazy and DRIVE. (plot)

And it was awesome. :D
Responses in (italicized parenthetical statements).

Rudimentary as hell but still a story.

World of Warcraft, is a good example.... Just do this quest than that, no real main line of story.
well i can agree no main story line but it has alot of storylines you can folow plus its an MMO if everyone was doing the exact same thing at the exact same time then there's barely any social so might as well make it 1player

Depending on the way you look at it, the Civilization games have either no story at all, or one of the biggest stories ever.
I vote for "Biggest Story Ever". It even changes every time you play.

You know the ones. The games where you get plonked into a suit of power armor, a shotgun deathcock shoved into your arms, and your vision tunneled to the first person perspective and thrust directly into the game with no idea how; or best of all why.

Worse of all as you progress through levels you still have no fucking clue what the point is besides fucking this world up.

My list includes Quake, and the entire racing sim genre.

What others have you come across that never once actually gave a story in the game itself.

PS: And don't say it's explained on the box, games should hold up on their own.
wait racing game are expected to have a story.....I thought the point of a racing game was to race....does there need to be a storyline in order to race?
