FFVI - Far more annoying and snobbish than the FFVII fans, even though the game is far more infantile and shallow both in gameplay and story than VII.

And a special mention to Final Fantasy VII. I still can't understand why it gets so much dedication considering its nearly 14 years old...and looks like a LEGO game.
Do you really think it's that bad looking? [http://i.imgur.com/sCGd1.jpg]

1. It's the most interactive rpg of the era. Over 35 different interactive set pieces. Games are about interacting. In FF1-6 you wander towns and dungeons, get in battles, and watch story segments, that's it. FFVII was revolutionary in filling the story with interactivity at every turn. The gold saucer area should have become a requirement for every main final fantasy title.

2. The setting. Modern, sci-fi, cyberpunk > Medieval fantasy nonsense. Each location was interesting stylistically. From wutai, rocket town, midgar, cosmo canyon, chocobo farm, junon. You could go into space and underwater as well as multiple land vehicles. There was a level of depth not seen before or since in the series. With FFVIII they started to use FMVs as a crutch rather than a flourish. Since then they slowly cut out minigames, the world map, towns, puzzles, exploration and all non-battle interactivity all together. Pre-rendered backdrops mean FFVII-IX have arguably aged the best of all ps1 games, and certainly far better than the ms paint based FF1-6. The entire planet was a microcosm of Earth culturally. The urban sprawn (midgar), the spanish resort (costa del sol), traditional eastern (wutai), military port (junon), farm, etc. Most prior games had generic castles and villages that weren't very memorable.

3. Everything else was superbly well done. Music fantastic. Plot was very memorable with lots of twists, lots of learning interesting backstories. Not so much religious magical crystal nonsense makes the world a lot more relatable and believable. Most interesting themes in the series like terrorism and nature, etc. Sephiroth, Shinra, Hojo and the turks all have their own different believable motivations and are meaningful enemies. Kefka is just a clown. Every antagonist since is a nonsense convoluted godlike being. The characters are memorable and though they're not as well developed as the ones since voice acting was introduced, that's maybe a good thing.

Half-life - I like the series, but it's entirely too wanked over when you consider that there's not much content in it after 13 years, and it was never very well developed storywise anyway.

Sotc/Ico - pretentious garbage with interesting gameplay gimmicks hoisted upon what are nothing more than empty sterile tech demos. People love ambiguous atmospheric games for some reason. It's not an intentional artistic decision to make the game have no dialogue and almost no plot, it's just laziness or lack of talent.

Bad Company - Fans backlash against the call of duty series and feel all superior about it. Both series are actually just as garbage as each other, and battlefield is arguably more casualised than call of duty. Let's go around blowing crap up in tanks and helicopters in horribly designed maps with a stupid class system. Explodable buildings are a gimmick that leads to horrible level design in every game I have seen it implemented. The buildings in BC2 or red faction are all empty and bland. Map design is the most important thing in a multiplayer game, and call of duty is far superior. Each map is fastidiously balanced and filled with interesting places to go. Battlefields are too big to have that higher level of strategy.

Gears of War - Horrible guns and gameplay, horrible characters, horrible plot, horrible level design, horrible driving sequence, horrible art design, horrible multiplayer infrastructure. That this game is more popular than MGS4 despite being worse in every conceivable way (especially multiplayer), is symptomatic of how game development has been corrupted and turned into an exploitable business rather than striving to advance entertainment potential.

Minecraft players. "OH NOOO CREEPER SO SCARY HE GON SSSSS AND BOOM 4 OF MY BLOCKS D:"
thats a massive exaggeration but ok o_O
people like creating things they think are really awesome and its much more fun when this thing takes a fair time to get together, so if it were destroyed yes, they would be annoyed. but usually something of that magnitude would take a lot more crepers o_O

I don't particularly like Valve fanboys. Sure, I like pretty much all of their games (cept Counter Strike), but I don't want to hear about them in every fucking topic.

I'm going to have to say Halo fanboys, even though it hurts me.

I am a big fan of the Halo series, and proud of it, but I do acknowledge that people are entitled to their opinions, and don't see the point of fighting over game preferences, which is why I get so annoyed at the 10yr old "OMG OMG MASTR CHIEF IS TEH GR8TEST" brats who camp, whine and whore heavy weapons. They're not even old enough to be playing the game for Christ sake.

So even though I'm a big fan of the game, the fanboys are the worst, because they ruin it for me.

Also valve arent that great, they make goo games, but christ, HL2 is an ovverrated peice of shit, and lets face it the character has 0 personality, even halo has more personality, and L4D wasnt that great. And all I ever hear about TF2 is fucking hats.

You cant comment on halo fanboys anymore imo, bungie has moved on, halo wont be an issue, M$ will make a new one, even the halo fanboys will hate it.
Judging from the view levels of campaign i played in halo 2, which IMO were shallow and boring, it is quite obvious that on the whole there is a lot more personality in HL2 than in Halo. no one has a personality in halo (IMO) whereas in HL2 all the main characters are fleshed out quite well (am i even using the right terminology?) and even some of the non important characters that help you out in the missions seem to have a personality, even if it isn't as full on as that of the main characters.

I'm starting to sound like a fanboy, which i probably am by your standards, so here goes. Overrated? yes, by some people, not all. some people will go overbored saying it is the best game evaa. it is a good game but there is no 'best game evaa' because everyone has different opinions on games. piece of shit? not really. well designed, good gameplay, and listening to the commentary (don't judge you sadistic wench rabbit) you can tell that they spent that heap of time they had on their hands finding out what the players did in their game, finding out what they wanted, and adding small touches- shit fanboy again....
HL2 is a mute scientis who you jsut see bludgeon things with a crowbar, how can that have personality ?
Halo 2 also had an amazing campaign imo, the mission killing the heratic, taking down the scarab, the last mission. It was amazing.

Bungie looked at what the community liked and enjoyed, lets look at vlaves work for the 360, TF2 is dead, and HL is just a generic shooter vlave fans fap over and hail as the second coming of christ, Halo 2 improved MP, Halo 3 gave us the forge, Halo reach made the forge even better. Improvements yes. valve just pumped out a
nother L4D game, added a few new guys and melee weapons, really not much imrpoved or added.

Tell me how does this amazing fleshed out mute have a personality ?
You didn't read me correctly. i said that ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS have well built personalities. Gordan Freeman does not. Yes, he has no voice and no personality. Why? because, at least for me, it made me myself feel more apart of the game. When the character you control does something you don't control, it makes you feel more like a camera following the character around, with some controls added in. Makes me feel more like i'm actually 'in it' when he's not talking. Again thats all IMO.

I just didn't get the same feel from halo. Maybe if i could play the whole campaign through without stopping to cleanse myself, i might change my opinion, but i doubt it. After the first couple of campaigns i just wasn't interested.

In the end, even if you aren't a fan boy you are more acutely aware of the positives in a game you like, and the negatives in games you dislike. That definitely comes into play here, and possibly throughout this hole forum.

Got to disagree, I noticed about 1.5 full personalities spread out unevenly between Half-Life 2's cast. That wasn't my main problem with the game, though (from what I played of it).

Also, IMO, Halo did the player-as-protagonist a little better than Half-Life. Gordon Freeman never offers so much as a grunt in response to anybody who speaks to him. Master Chief and Noble Six have non-specific, personality-less lines they speak to avoid sounding rude - about the only thing you can deduce from them is that Master Chief is a bit of a badass, and since that's exactly the personality people have projected onto Freeman I'm afraid I don't see much difference.

Characters have never been Halo's strong point either. But I'm increasingly coming to realise that characters aren't necessary in lots of games for a good story (especially FPS games, where there usually isn't a main character as that's supposed to be you) - the only common exception being RPGs.

Wait, huh?

Isn't it the other way around?
Yeah, that's my point, but there are some people who think it's the other(other) way around and I just can't stand them.
