There was an old vertical scrolling shooter I played once, I cant remember the name of it for the life of me. But the thing I remembered most about it was that you didn't JUST collect powerups for better weapons and added firepower. Your ship would start off fairly small, but you'd pick up parts that would add to your ship and increase its size. No, you didn't just 'grow', the pieces added on to you individually, so that there would be no resolution issues I suppose, and yes this made you a larger target but it also gave you more armor.
I loved it! but the name.. the name is gone.. I haven't seen ANYTHING resembling this kind of ship growth in over 15 years. No games making throwbacks to such a design (DarkStar One does not count, *shudder*)
The system we played on was a Golden China console (basically it was a South African (YESIMSOUTHAFRICAN) knockoff of the NES since it had all the classics, donkey kong, super mario brothers, excite bike, islander, tetris, pinball and a smorgasbord of other games).
If anyone can identify this old gem I'd be extremely grateful.
