I have to admit, Spore sprang to my mind first as well. But, enough has been said about that one to not go over it yet again. So, how about Darkspore?
I saw the gameplay videos of it and I thought it looked really interesting. I was excited for a Spore game where my creative skills would matter when it comes to how the game plays. After playing the beta for the game, I was sorely disappointed in what I found.
Let's start with the gameplay. A hack and slash RPG needs to have some character development/advancement in order for me to stay interested. A good way to do this is gain more powerful/new moves or combo attacks, for example. In Darkspore, you get a grand total of three abilities as well as one passive that affects all active heroes in multiplayer. While one of the three abilities is shared with the squad, these abilities are unchanging. The only difference between the starting abilities and ending is their damage due to scaling with hero level, which is determined by the item level of things pasted onto your hero. So, you have the same moves at the very beginning with the hero as you will in the end. This made gameplay very repetitive and boring for me.
Perhaps this move was to promote the use of more than one hero. But, outfitting more than a couple heroes was made very tedious. In order to outfit them, you would have to load up each hero in the creature editor and paste on their objects. While this doesn't sound bad at first, remember that squads are three heroes and you're encouraged to have several squads due to the different types of darkspore you'll encounter in the various missions. Plus, different heroes use different stats for their abilities. So, you'll have to spend even longer figuring out if any of the armor/peices you picked up are even an upgrade for that hero before moving onto the next one. Tedious.
What I would have killed for was the ability to create my own heroes instead of using the same pool of base heroes as everyone else. It felt as if they really missed the boat on that one. Considering how simple it was to share creatures in Spore, they could had worked out something for Darkspore. But, maybe it is something they are waiting for the expansion pack to address.
Also, what multiplayer loot-fest doesn't have a trading system? Granted, it was a beta. But, considering the developers were "considering the idea" made me wary of the game when it made it to retail.
Oh Maxis, what happened to you?
