As an opposite to "Gorilla Gunk"s "Games you want to like but just can't" thread -

I thought id do this, so, like the title says -
Games you didn't think you'd like, but ended up loving

For me it would be Mass Effect, Red Dead: Redemption, and Batman: Arkham Asylum

Mass Effect - I played both Dragon Age games, and I loved the story, the characters and the setting (DA:O more than 2), but I just didn't think a RPG couldn't be done very well in the future (I don't know why), I recently got the game on Origin for a measly £5, and I've got to say, I love that damn game. The combat, the characters, the setting, the story; I just love it all! I will definitely be getting 2 and 3 for my birthday.

Red Dead: Redemption - I have never been a fan of the "Wild West", or Rockstar games, but I decided to borrow RD:R from my friend to try it out, within about 20 minutes I was really enjoying the game, and I decided to buy the game the next day.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Much like Red Dead: Redemption, I have never really been into the Batman universe, I had heard some very good things about AA, so I decided to get the game on Steam last year on a sale for about £7, I was very impressed with the combat, story, graphics and most of all, that amazing voice acting by Mark Hamill for the Joker.

Metro 2033 for me.

Went to my local Gamestop and wanted something, couldn't find anything, and just decided to pick up Metro. Wasn't too big on it, but then I found that it felt like Half Life. Now "Metro" is my category for games like this. "Never thought about it, bought it anyway, liked."

Splinter Cell:Conviction - I was never a fan of the SC series or of stealth games in general but I saw this new for ?10 and decided to give it a bash.Thoroughly enjoyed it probably due to the fact that it's more action oriented than the previous games, something I understand disappointed a lot of SC fans

Until i couple of weeks agon I never played an Assassins creed game.
I just ignored the whole series and I didn't thought I would really like it with all the "being an assassin" thing. (I'm ussually a warrior or a mage)

I started with assassins creed two and It's a hell of a game, I'm completely surprised that a souless monster as ubisoft could come up with such a gaming masterpiece.

Decided to get Fable 2 on a whim.

LOVED IT TO BITS.

Inverse reaction to most of you, probably.

No, I loved Fable 2 as well, it was all I played for about a month. Sadly, to me at least, Fable 3 just wasn't up to scratch, not to say I didn't enjoy it though.

Didn't like Fable 3 too much, myself. But I still enjoyed it, too.

Plus the co-op worked.

Dungeons of Dredmor. I went from "huh, the randomness and permadeath are a little weird, but it's the price of a burger so why not" to "DUDE THIS IS THE BEST THING FOR SO MANY REASONS WHERE CAN I GET MOAR GAEMS LIKE THIS" in the space of a few hours.

I used to hate Halo, in fact I never really did shooters before with the exception of the glorious TimeSplitters.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Bought it half expecting a cheap mediocre God of War Rip Off.

Then I played it, and I discovered that I was wrong, so very wrong.

Biggest surprise for me this gen, the game is absolutely stunning.

Alpha protocol . It was 9 bucks . I bought it because it was 9 bucks . I didn't play it until a year after buying it . LOVED IT TO DEATH. One of the rare games i played twice back to back . It is one of my favorite games on the xbox 360 . Then i played deus ex : hr a few months after , and wish it was more like alpha protocol .

Mass effect. Was sceptical but it turned out to be one of the best games (and game series) I've ever played. I still remember the first "This game is awesome" moment. It was on therum and plenty of geth were trying to kill me. I got my sniper, aimed at a geth at the far side of the map and killed it. Loved everything about the game after that. The story, the universe, the gameplay, the characters, the inventory, the elevators, the mako. I went to every single side mission and got every single mineral. Talking to Vigil and Shepard coming from the wreckage is still one of the greatest scenes in gaming in my opinion.

La Noire. Didn't really see how it would be any fun to drive around in a big city with no shops or killable pedestrians. Neither did I think that lurking around a crime scene would be any fun. However I loved the game. The gameplay was interesting, you felt like you got respect as you rose in ranks, and the narrative was flawless.

Orks Must Die. I hate the medieval fantasy Peter Pans and Merlins that plague our games these days, but I loved this game. The 3rd person shooter tower defense is how I would describe the game. It's a blast.

The Witcher series. Never been a fan of that combat style.

And then I played both games. I got addicted to the story and the characters and the world. Still not a huge fan of the combat, but whatever, everything else is glorious.

I played the demo on xbox and found myself not getting very excited for it.
Years later I decide to give it another shot, and then I got completely hooked and couldn't wait for Arkham City to come out. lol
Hope they make a 3rd game, as it's just really fun. The combat and gadgets and secrets and exploring and atmosphere and voice acting and everything. OMG, it's amazing. Glad I gave it another chance.

Elite Beat Agents

I don't much like anime, I'm not into cheesy pop tunes, and I'm terrible at rythm games. By all rights I should loathe this game but I don't, I bloody love it. Such a damned good game!

So much this. I found Oblivion really boring.

While the internet was wetting their pants over OMG SKYRIM LOOKS AMAZIN I was just sitting there uninterested.

Went out on a whim and randomly bought it and loved it.
