Well for me it was Katamari Damacy! I couldn't imagine what would happen if my friends busted in on me singing alone to the awesome soundtrack as I giggled my way around levels and yelled ROYAL RAINBOW! at the end.

I own a game called Oni, a little-known anime inspired action game made by Bungie (yes, the guys who made Halo) on the PS2 as a launch title. It received generally unfavorable reviews for oversensitive controls, uninspired graphics, and repetitive gameplay with a kickass heroine at its helm, yet I actually found it quite enjoyable for the storyline and hand-to-hand combat mechanics.

It's a dark secret, because at the time (2001, I believe; I was about 11), I only got the game for the said heroine that starred in it (stupid boyish hormones going for games with hot virtual women...). Nowadays, I'm just starting to play through it again as a way to give it a second chance.
That was the first ps2 game I ever rented when it came out. I didn't know what R/L3 was so I didn't get past the beginning but I should pick it up on ebay considering its ~5$ and l3/r3 is clicking the analog sticks :p

I guess I'm going to have to add Cooking Mama to my list now. I picked it up because I thought it would be a cute diversion, but now I want to get all the gold medals for all the recipes, and damn it if it isn't hard!

Steambot chronicles.

I bought it because I figured it would take a long time to finish, and it had robot fights, so it couldn't be all bad, right?

wrong. Take everything bad about jrpgs(useless whiny storyline, characters you hate*, and exceptionally linear gameplay**) and multiply it by a thousand and add terrible music***.

That still didn't stop me from playing it for a month and a half straight.

*All of them, they were named for spices, and they all had sad pasts and were generally crybaby twatcicles.

**Even though it was a "sandbox" game, yeah, you could dick around for a few hours, but it was incredibly boring to do so_Once you beat it, it had some odd "one year later" bullshit where you come back and(as far as I can tell) look for people.

***seriously, that crap was horrific.

Good lord, I feel unclean now that I've told someone that.

The Grand Theft Auto series. I've preached how childish and juvenile all those games are to all my friends enough times to be ashamed of this fact: yes, I will be getting GTA IV and playing it until the disc melts.

Legend wasn't a Tomb Raider game; it was an action game with Lara Croft. Anniversary was better, and I have hopes that CD finally understands what TR is---and isn't. ;)

Ring of Red for the PS2. I may have been ridiculed for enjoying turn based mecha combat but damnit, there's no greater feeling than knowing that you're opponent will be dead in two moves or less.
Confused...

Ring of Red is actually a really good game, and was one of the first PS2 games to actually get a universally good critical reception, why should it be a "dark little secret"?

- Rayman Series: I've had to explain to my friends about 10,000 times why Rayman's hands and feet weren't attached to his body, so I just stopped playing it when I arranged weekly get-togethers.
There's a reason for that? I'm intrigued, what is it? Not taking the piss, I'm genuinely intrigued!

Forumwarz, I'm really a PC, ultra-liberal love-monger who prefers complete sentences. Forumwarz is just such a different experience that is strangely freeing.

Were you one of the idiots who wasted money on the Collector's Edition? ;)
Well played, sir...

Being a self-professed "hard-core" gamer, and hanging out with mostly the same types of people, I would have to say my dirty secrets are games such as Rollercoaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, The Sims, etc. I can't even explain to myself why I like them, but I do.

Sounds like I need to check out Lego Star Wars. I've been guilty of mocking it with no grounds for doing so, but it sounds like I was wrong.

Also - on my NES emulator...Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball. Go play it, then come back and make fun of me... :)
