The Monster Hunter series is actually pretty bad at some points with this. Boulders and things you can't run/shoot through look like safe spots, but THINK AGAIN!! The monster has zero trouble phasing right through it with ANY of its attacks.

The Lavasioth is particularly frustrating since (being a lava monster) it can dive through solid rock. That means it can burst up from right below you with almost no warning. Even though Portable 3rd looks cool, every time I think about it I remember all the sh*t I went through in Unite and my enthusiasm starts to wane.
Not to mention when charge attacks simply wrap to the map's walls. Nothing like thinking you're safe bring slightly off-axis from the (insert monster name here[footnote]Rathian / Rathalos / Barroth / Add your own [/footnote])'s charge but then the wall pushes the monster sideways straight into you...

Also re: lava monster, the Agnaktor (which I believe is the lava beastie in Portable 3rd) creates a very obvious region when it's about to pop up from below the floor (or at least it did in Tri, so I'm guessing it will in Portable 3rd) so your troubles might be over in that regard.

I remember (and this is old, but I don't play many racing games) that Mario Kart on the N64 had a bad glitch that let the AI cheat. When racing, getting hit by a red shell or driving into a fake item block would result in a crash that would send your kart into the air before coming down, costing you seconds before you could even start going forward again. If an AI racer was in front of you and you saw him hit a fake block or if you hit him with a red shell, there were times where they wouldn't jump up, only start the animation to crash and then be back on their wheels, and up to speed WAY faster than you could be able to. I was still really young when I played that game, so it really turned me off on Mario Kart...I had to be forced to play Double Dash by a friend to fall back in love with the series...although I'm pretty sure it's just "coincidence" that all the AIs somehow get a spike shell, red shell, and lightning bolt all at the same time and just happen to use them in the right order to keep you in one place, about 10 feet from the finish line, so you'll end up 5th. ;)

Any tecmo bowl, if you pick the same play on defense as the offense its like insta-sack. The computer almost always seems to know what I'm gonna run when you get late in the season. Suspicious me thinks.

World at war, all of it on veteran. I'v played thru spec ops on MW2 on vet solo and nothing compares to WaW. You poke out a foot and everyone knows where you are. An entire squad between me and this one guy and im behind a wall and the AI will still manage to run past all of them and come hit me with their gun butt. Bring back IW im sick of Treyarch...

Because I'm pissed off tonight.

So I'm playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, not even on the last race in the series, and I have to do this god damned duel between a Bugatti Veyron and Koenigsegg CCXR.
The first time I tried it I hadn't unlocked the Veyron yet, so I was stuck with the Koenigsegg, which was a couple of miles slower, top speed wise.
I have a pretty good run, but during one of the hairpin turns towards the mountain area the game throws me a traffic car that swerves towards me as I attempt to drift past it, the Veyron takes the lead, and then stays there for the remainder of the race...
I say "fuck it" and go do some different races.
After that happens I unlock the Veyron and decide to go back to the dual.
"Ah hah! Now I have the better car!".
Same thing happens, except this time I have an even better run, even having the Koenigsegg crash into traffic twice and still catch fully up to me, run into a traffic car which swerves into me on the same hairpin turn, get overtaken by the slower top speed Koenigsegg, and then become completley unable to regain the lead...
Third try, I take all of the turns flawlessly, the Koenigsegg has been behind me the whole race, I don't crash into any traffic on the hairpin turns, and two miles before the finish I get overtaken doing full speed (which for the Veyron is a couple of miles over the Koenigsegg) and no matter how much Nitro I use I cannot catch up to him.
What the hell is this?
Am I not supposed to be able to finish first? The first two times I acknowledge that I messed up, but my final try I trump the Koenigsegg completely by using a faster car and it still smokes me easily and stays in front against all odds.
Needless to say, I raged and logged on here to complain about it...
Now post.
Clearly you need the Bugatti Veyron Sport. Also, the Koenigsegg would go better around those corners if you put a spoiler on the back, and would generally give you a faster time overall. Doubt it would be enough to beat the Veyron though.

Top Gear has spoken.

I love it but I hate Red Alert 3

There is no middle ground when fighting the AI.

You have easy with results in the poor little bastards turtling till you decided to attack and kill them.

The is medium which is a slowly non offensive expanding tutrling that just lets you steam roll them when you find them. I honestly have more issues hunting down the stray recourse nodes structure's then fighting its standing and I mean standing still army the little bugger hardly fight back.

Then there is hard,
This is where the AI gos in over drive I swear it no longer has Fog of War effecting it it calculates the right amount of force is required to kill units and it accounts for cost and time production for each of units so that it resources never get depleted. If you should attack it before it gets to you it knows just the right number and what kind units it needs to kill your invasion force while having its main force march on your ass.

And finally we have insane mode
I swear the computer is getting extra resources or at least accounting for every signal penny. And due to the fact its a computer it has the power to see the whole battle filed in exact detail and it can micromanage every signal unit at the same time. Giving it the power to send different orders to each unit has at the same bloody time. I might have the power to do that if I could plug my brain directly in to the computer. (Or if I was South Korean) But I can't.

So can we get a computer whose AI is restricted on its interface in to the software. Like how the Bots in TF2 can only see through the first person view that normal person would see or the fact the bot has to move its virtual mouse back to center of its pad from time to time.

Any RTS game that instead of making the AI smarter just let them cheat by building things cheaper/faster/stronger than you.

Super Meat Boy, because I always seem to end up in just the right spot to get killed when attempting insanely hard levels. I honestly think 1/4 of my later deaths were because of the game cheating me.

RISK: Factions - The AI is very unfair. It will beat you so often and so hard that it's not even funny. I can name 1 time in particular this happened. I had an army of 40 and attacked a spot with 3. I ended up with 26 before I finally beat it.

And pretty much any game in the later difficulties. Shooters make it so the AI can see you anywhere, RTSs and Turn-based give the AI unfair advantages, platformers cheat you out by saying you didn't make jumps, racing makes it so the other cars can catch up to you unless you're much faster then them, and so on and so forth.

Immediately I thought of the final boss fight in MGS1, if you are on the right half of the arena, you can't hit him.

Let me explain, you fight on top of a metal gear, but the right side of it's head is sloping downward for some reason, so if you are on the right side you CAN punch liquid once, but snakes second punch is always aimed high, so it will go above liquids head, and by the time you do your third attack in the combo his invincibility has already activated and he will combo you. This made me lose again and again because I just could not hit him fully, whereas all his punches and kicks are on the same level.

I used to have this happen to me on the V8 Supercars Demo (obviously with different cars) for the Xbox. I forgave it though because, it helped me get the 360 (because I sold the demo disc for $20. Poor sucker who bought it.).

Racing games.

In a different genre, I noticed some AI assholery in Halo Reach yesterday. In Sword Base, an Elite Ultra runs down a ramp after having a longer range fight with me. I'm standing shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of marines who are shooting at him, but I'm hurt so I go into armor lock. The Elite runs right up next to me. The marines stop shooting. The elite doesn't shoot at them. There was a total cease-fire for as long as I was in armor lock. The instant I get out, the marines open fire, and the Elite kicks the shit out of me.

Probably my favorite AI cheating is in StarCraft. I had complete control over the islands on the bottom half of the map save one. I send one SCV to start building a base on this island which is in the bottom corner, completely surrounded by friendly forces. There were detector units around; absolutely no enemies were in the area. Then a bunch of scouts zigzagged in between all my islands, killed my SCV, and left immediately afterward. I'm calling shenanigans.

ANYTHING where percentages get involved. I could have a 70% hit chance and still miss 3/4 times!

Billy Vs Snakeman and the Robo Fighto! I'm looking at YOU!
