Never played a Deus Ex game and I really don't care, but. I will say that the argument "it had a lot to live up to" never flew with me. If it's the same team, then they are competent enough to make another good game. If it's a different team, who aren't professionals who know exactly what they're doing, they should just stop right there.

Speaking of.

I'm going to have to pick Tales of Legendia and Gungrave: Overdose. Oh, everyone hates them, with a damn good reason: They're bad. They're really, really bad.

I think of them, however, as "so bad it's good."

Legendia had a predictable plot, full of cliches, and badly written dialogue that I couldn't help but snicker at.

Gungrave: Overdose had an atrocious story, some of the worst voice acting (the keyword being acting: They had good voices, but they couldn't act for SHIT) you'll ever hear, some really bad game design choices, and a whining, angsting, emo mary sue. It's a trainwreck. And it is one of the most glorious trainwrecks I have ever witnessed.

The best character in the game... Is the ghost of an elvis wannabe.

Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise, and more recently, Bastion.

My friends are stupid. They're FPS-fed mongrels who see an AC-130 section and wet their pants. I am a bit more intellectual. I play just about everything, always looking for new experiences that push the medium further and further into an artform. This can be traced back to my first-ever Xbox 360 game, and first game as a true gamer, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

So much cute! So many unlockables! Gotta... get... that... Dragonache... It was the best thing I had ever experienced, so many hours were logged, it was just amazing. My friends see the cuteness and immediately turn it off, labeling it a kids game, and never giving it a chance.

Two point five years later, we've got the Summer of Aracade. I have two potential titles for purchase, Bastion, or Toy Soldiers: Cold War.

Now, Bastion has been adored by many (even The Escapist's own Yahtzee) as an innovative, funny, overall great indie title with an awesome narrator. Toy Soldiers: Cold War? Good, a bit too much like the original, less unique with the bandwagon-jumping cold-war-setting.

I have both trials. The boys jump right into the Toy Soldiers trial, gobbling it up in bursts of "Oo" and "Ah" and "HATREDCOPTER". When I dictate my greater desire to purchase Bastion instead (remember, 16, limited disposable income), while them having never even seen the trial, they yelled at me with cries of, "I don't care about your little Bastion! This is friggin Toy Soldiers: Cold War! Action! Look! A helicopter! WOO!". I felt shafted, the Bastion experience just seemed like the overall better game.

TIP and Bastion... I'm an RPG/God Gamer Tuna in a sea of FPS minnows. Ah well.

I really enjoy Driv3r, but the trick is that you have to play it RIGHT. Get some friends over, get the cheats turned on and play "Survival". Mark down how long you survived and pass the controller around. After five games, the person who lived the longest out of those five games wins.

My dad and I play the game like that and we laugh our asses off at how ridiculous the cops are in that mode! XD

In the other thread about the same topic, I couldn't believe the rainbow 6 vegas series got any hate at all. Vegas 2 is like my favorite game of ALL TIME. Can't get enough of it...such a simple premise, and so many ways to play. Guns feel right, gameplay paced/balanced superbly, terrorist hunts on various difficulties/density offer so much replayability. Coolest shit ever.

Also can't believe anyone would hate Vampire: Bloodlines, that was a tremendously immersive game with atmosphere, story angles, and characters.

OT: There's probably a few, but I really like Severance, that didn't seem to be received too well (old school sword fighting adventure game I played on PC), and Kane & Lynch 1 & 2. They got torn apart for the glitches, story and characters, but I actually had a lot of fun in them, especially the first one.

I guess Medal of Honor 2010, I was so excited for it, preordered and everything, I loved it, but the rest of the community didn't, Im still good at it and will enjoy a game every now and then, but becuase the matchmaking system against the low rate of XBL players is crap Im often pitted against an entire team, no worry M16 Suppressed ACOG, too easy XD

Final Fantasy XIII.

I can understand why a lot of people didn't like it and I recognize that the game has its barrel of flaws.

But, damn I had fun playing it and while the story was far from perfect, I felt that the character progression were excellent.

Deus Ex Invisible War...

Yeah it wasn't as good as the first one but then it had way too much to live up to, it still had a decent story and strong RPG and shooter aspects.

Everyone seemed to hate it but I kinda liked it
Here, take this flame shield, I've got one. We shall form a phalanx of opinion. I too liked Invisible War a lot, despite it's differences from the original. They're both good games in their own right.

I usually only come to this website for Yahtzee and Zero Punctuation, but I had to register and put my two cents in on this thread.

TWO freaking WORLDS! seriously, I bought this game last year for six bucks, expecting to return it the next day. even the guy at the counter called it "Boo Worlds". Well, you were all wrong. the combat system is fun, if a little repetitive. The typical fantasy world organizations (fighter's guild, mage's guild, thieves' guild) have non-generic names and backstories. The only complaint I could make is that the main character often references events in his life that I have no knowledge of, and then doesn't expand on them. But this is only a minor complaint.

Deus Ex: Invisible War: A disappointing sequel, but still a very good game.

Alpha Protocol: Holy Crap, I loved this game. It was the Mass Effect game I always wanted with balanced gameplay and RPG elements, and the choices. Steam probably has it cheap, check it out. Obsidian can do great things if they were given more time, resources, and money.

Mirror's Edge: While not exactly hated still really liked this game. The art style was beautiful the gameplay was flawed, but fun, and introduced to one of my favorite songs. Still Alive by Lisa Miskovsky

Warcraft? Hm, everyone likes it.
Starcraft? Good as well.
Diablo?
Half Life?
Portal?
I feel like I only play good games. And people tend not to hate good games (except occasional WoW-hate).

Who the hell can you name who rags on Warrior Within? The Prince of Persia trilogy is one of the most critically acclaimed series out there, because of its smooth platforming and original asthetic. Metacritic lists 24 professional reviews which say it's good, 5 mixed and none -- that's zero -- that say it's bad. So where are you getting the hate from?

Chrono Cross.
I don't think you read the topic title correctly. Chrono Cross is a popular and generally loved game. Yeah, CT is way more popular and more often regarded as the superior game of the two (for good reason IMO), but it's generally regarded as an excellent game, but an atrocious "sequel" (even though it's not a direct sequel).
I've only personally met one person who was a fan of Chrono Trigger and also loved Chrono Cross, so I that was my basis for saying "I loved it and everyone else hated it."

And if you're going to get all technical, there is NO game that qualifies under the topic title. For it to qualify, the poster would have to literally be the ONLY person in the world who loved the game and EVERYONE else in the entire world without exception would have to hate the game, not be indifferent or think "it's okay," but hate it. There is no game that meets that criteria.

So, maybe YOU didn't read the topic title clearly, or maybe your perception of the way Chrono Cross is presently received is more optimistic than mine. Either way, don't get technical unless you're ready to go all the way with it. This is casual gaming discussion, not logical argument.

Oh, you know... http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/12/03 and Yahtzee, mostly.
Well, fair enough. Penny arcade does attack a couple of the game's aspects, funnily enough the same ones that Yahtzee does as well. But what Yahtzee also has said about Warrior Within is that: "The enviroments were still nice and the gameplay was better than ever." So you see, just because a couple of aspects are being criticised, doesn't mean that the game as whole is considered as being bad.

I really love Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. Granted the later games were pants but 1 and 2 were awesome when I was 16. I seem to have this idea of the character as intelligent and capable whereas everyone else just says she is a pair of boobs.

Was I playing the same games? :|

I think nostalgia helps with these sort of games. This was the first game I ever played that had shooting in it, so I worshiped it. My boyfriend recently pointed out that Lara is horribly selfish and is like a rebel without a cause. She decides to go find a relic and just shoots up whatever she feels like, including people and endangered animals. He says Indiana Jones makes a much better one. I have to agree, but I still don't care. I love her lol.

By the way, totally looking forward to the reboot!
To be fair she gets commissioned to find the scion and then fights back against Natla when it turns out she is nefarious. She didn't have to she could have just taken the money and walked away.

She also doesn't attack people or animals unless they attack her first. I think in one instance she actually tries to save Pierre DuPont who is her rival for one of the artifacts, if I remember correctly. I think your boyfriend has been watching Yahtzee's reviews :p

I'm looking forward to the reboot too although I am fearful of an Other M style mess on that front. :S
Oh my goodness, I forgot about how much I love Angel of Darkness! That's one of the few ones I really like because it shows her being rather real with people. I liked Legend for the same reason. I watch Yahtzee a lot with my boyfriend, so guilty as charged. I did not play the one with Natla in it. I watched the play through, and I can agree that she could have just ran off while she took over the world lol.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Not only is it Kingdom Hearts, it's the weird 2D handheld one with cards.
