I'ma start with Planescape: Torment. It's one of those dreaded 2nd edition AD&D Infinity Engine games, and it's one of the most heartwrenchingly beautiful things ever written for nerds who think in hit points. Don't like the isometric RPG style of gameplay? Play it anyway; the lackluster game mechanics are more than made up for by the unique, atmospheric setting, the desperately flawed and sympathetic psychopaths that hover around you, the sad and romantic storyline... the... well, everything. It shines lucent genius in every artistic department. If the opportunity ever presents itself to you to play this game, take it, it's gorgeous.
Definitely Planescape: Torment. As Mnemophage said, you can forgive some shoddy mechanics for pretty much everything else the game offers. Not only is every tiny character feel like a unique entity and practically every bit of the story is unforgetable, but it's one of the few RPGs I can call to mind that really allow for an alternative to hack-n-slash at nearly every turn and where you really do have a wide-array of options instead of the goody-two-shoes solution or the indescriminantly evil solution.

If you haven't played it yet, get on that.

Did anyone say Sacrifice? No? I'll say it then. Sacrifice.

There.

I'd also like to second MDK 2. That game was a joy from beginning to end and it's a shame that nobody bought or played it. I mean you can play as a four-armed dog wielding four chainguns at once. What's not to like?

Plus the original MDK introduced the Gaming world to the joys of sniping, which should never be forgotten.

Oooh, everyone needs to play at least one of the Advance Wars games too.

Little Big Adventure(called Relentless here in America). It's an under-appreciated oldie(runs on DOS), and pretty fun. Just recently got it working on my PC and am playing it again for the first time in god knows how long.

Team Fortress 2 deserves a mention. And if you like team gameplay like that, might as well give Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory a try. It's free.

Hum.. All the other games I was going to mention have already been said.

Tony Hawk 2 and Tony Hawk Underground, two best games of that series.

Also I would say ALL the MGS series not just the first one, though I respect those who disagree.

And I don't think anyone has mentioned God of War yet.

I'll mention games that have not yet been mentioned and are kinda old:

Sid Mier's Alpha Centauri (How did you guys miss this, PCGamer gave it a 98% score, tied with half-life 2's score)

Ascendancy (this actually works without a DOSbox, amazing)

Super Mario 64 (duh)

The Longest Journey (perhaps THE best traditional point-click adventure game)

Guild Wars (k fine it's not an old game, but this is good for anti-WoW ppl, in my view alot of the things you thought were missing or wanted in WoW can be found in Guild Wars (goes vice-versa too unfortunately).

Well, lets see here
- Ocarina of Time. This doesn't even need an explanation
- Eternal Darkness. This game was excellent. Great storyline, graphics and gameplay and it kept me entertained enough to play it through three times to get the final ending.
- Pokemon Red/Blue. Yes I am adding these ones in because despite their childish nature, they were fun and completing the PokeDex doesn't involving find 8 billion different f****** varieties of pokemon as the modern incarnations do.
- Baldur's Gate 2. I have played this game to death and I still love it. I have yet to play it the same way twice, although my favourite was the sorcerer class.
- Super Smash Bros. This was the highlight of the N64 aside from the blessed Ocarina of Time and allowed my parents to discover new swears words as me and bro were beating the hell out of each other.
- Goldeneye. It was kick ass for its day. You could even lag it :D
Finally Diablo 2 - Truly awesome game. Well done to Blizzard.
