Fallen Earth.

A post-apocalypse MMO from an indie studio. First person shooter style combat, very in-depth crafting and a huge and very atmospheric world. Helpful and friendly in-game community as well.

Emphatically NOT a Fallout 3 rip-off. It was in development well before that game was released, and is more Mad Max inspired in any case.
I actually had tried that game but couldn't make anything because I was a BIG noob. So I quit. Also I didn't have a mount.

I'm sad that no one has mentioned Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

It's a great atmospheric horror game by Frictional, the same studio that developed Penumbra. Hell, even Yahtzee liked it.

It's only $20 on Steam, and over the weekend I believe it's 33% off.

Torchlight for awesome ARPG fun, Shadow of the Colossus because it's just so different and minimalistic, in that it includes only the colossi and the area map, without any sort of equipment-collecting or grinding of any sort. Basically, SotC doesn't do very much to remind you that you're playing a game.

Would someone PLEASE play Obscure?
Seriously, stop reading this and go fucking play it, it was an incredibly fun, terrifying survival horror game.

Also quite an apt recommendation given...Y'know, Halloween and everything.

Disciples 2
Metro 2033
Ground Control
and Global Agenda since sandstorm...

All great games in their own way...but generally not very popular.

Note: Global Agenda is an MMO. <<
Yep, Metro 2033, I would recommend that to everyone.

Alundra. It's an RPG that was released on the PS1 way back when(and was also recently released on the PSN store so I can finally play it again). It's often compared to Zelda, and with good reason, but it's a very good game on it's own right. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes RPGs.
Another game I recommend is Brave Fencer Musashi. It parodies the actual Miyamoto Musashi. You play as a young samurai named Musashi, who was summoned to another world to save the Allucaneet Kingdom from the Thirstquencher Empire. You must find the sword Lumina, and gather the Five Scrolls(earth, water, fire, wind, and sky) to help you on your quest. You are also given the sword Fusion, which allows you to literally absorb your foes and assimilate their abilities. For example, if you absorb a soldier who has a gun, you can shoot bullets from your fingers. It's an extremely fun Action-RPG, with a fair sense of humor. I recommend pretty much anyone to try this game.

The learning curve can be a bit steep early on, but the devs recently reworked the extended tutorial (after the prologue in the Dam) so you might want to give it another try. Oh, and you'll get your first horse at the end of the tutorial.

Just don't ask in the Help Channel how to 'unsummon' your horse, since once it's out in the world it stays there, which is just one of the details that adds so much to the sense of it being a real world you're in.

it seems surprisingly few people have played world of goo. this should change. SOMEHOW through a physics game with a very simple and completely incomprehensible story, the two developers managed to convey alot of emotion. what? also its very very fun and charming.

Okay, here we go.

Men of War: Awesome World War II RTT, but it can be a little impenetrable for some people, since the difficulty level is insane in some parts even when played on Easy.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Still, in my opinion, the best WWII combat flight simulator ever made, and it has cooperative multiplayer, which is always a plus.

Psychonauts: Fantastically fun puzzle-platformer that never received nearly as much publicity as it shoud have, since it's a fantastic game.

Grim Fandango: This is, in my opinion, the best adventure game ever made, and probably up there with the best written games ever.

Call of Duty: To be honest, I'd be surprised if there was anyone on here who hasn't played the first Call of Duty game, but if there are, you definitely should. It's worth it for either the first Russian mission or the American mission where you're careening around the countryside in a banged up citroen alone.

Deus Ex: The combat is awful, the mechanics are clunky, but the meaningful choices you have to make that affect the narrative and the crazy cyber-punk plot that reads like all the ridiculous fantasies of a first-year PolSci major mixed together make this a game you should totally play.

The Half-Life Series: Seriously, does this really even need to be said?

The Sly Cooper trilogy, the 2nd in particular, it's just brilliantly brilliant

Also, Geist, it's a puzzle FPS for the GC (at least) and is just super fun ^^
