Half Life 2. I didn't think the game was that good at all. Nothing in the "plot" is explained at all, you are required to have played the first one to know wtf is going on.
It's pretty common to have to play the first game to understand what's going on in the second. I don't understand that complaint.

OT: I'm getting sick of hearing about Halo. I liked Halo 1 and some of the 3, but it's getting really old.

Call of Duty, it was very good and I am not even saying it doesnt deserve praise but I mean come on... people are obsessed with it and you know just stop telling me about it. Yeah it was good, but everyone I know freaking talks about it. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD MY CHURCH MENTIONED IT AND HALF THE CONGREGATION WENT NUTs ...IN A GOOD WAY! What the hell is that about? (I'm actually being serious too)

Call of Duty MW and MW2. It's just another generic modern warfare game.

Oh, and Killing Floor. Stop comparing it to L4D, the two games aren't close enough to compare.

Will you guys (that's not you Escapists by the way, I'm using "you" as a generic term) just shut up about every single one of Valve's games for ONE FUCKING MINUTE? Seriously, there are people who practically worship Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2. I'm getting sick of hearing about how awesome they are.

I'm also sick and tired of hearing about how terrible FFXIII is. And I don't even know the first thing about the game, other than that it was made by Japanese people and so is probably a little odd by our standards.
Amen to that.

I'm mainly a console gamer and generally ignore all of the Valve wanking that goes on, but really is getting out of hand. Every other thread is almost guaranteed to contain at least one person who considers Valve's next release date to be the second coming of Jesus.

I swear no-one actually read the OP, this thread is about games "you do think are worthy of the hype/praise/sales" but you still think are overpraised.

OT: I can't actually think of any, most of the games I really like are ones like Fallout 3 or Fable 2 which tend to be love 'em or hate 'em.

Portal. It was a three hour first person puzzle game that had a funny premise. I get it. it was funny. Shut up now.
Might want to consider changing your avatar, then...

EDIT: Ninjas! Ninjas everywhere!

On topic, everything by Blizzard. I despise that company and everything to do with it, especially after spending some time being told exactly how great WoW and Starcraft are. It gets especially irritating when everyone you hang out with is obsessed with WoW and will discuss nothing else.

No its not. Any good writer (movie, books, games, etc.) will tell you that writing a sequel without introducing any of the characters, the setting, the motivation behind everyones actions, and so on is a plan for failure. You never assume that everyone reading/watching/playing has intimate knowledge of your previous works. Unless you are Robert Jordan, but he's made of fail anyway.

I'm seeing a lot of people here answer MW2, which is kind of like beating the dirt patch, where there used to be the blood, where there used to be the carcass of a very dead horse.

Seriously, does MW2 get ANY praise these days?

OT: Counter Strike, I think it relies too much on twitch gameplay and only a handful of the guns are actually useful.
