Final Fantasy VIII game corrupted just before Ultimesia... twice.
Several reformats of my PC harddrive has resulted in lost saves - however most games can be level skipped. As long as I can roughly remember what I had in the inventory then I put them all back in through codes or the console.

I had problems with Deus Ex. I played "through the game" three times but I only completed the game once (the first time through). On subsequent outings the game saves seemed to break down about the time you get to Area 51.

Steel Battalion was the worst of them though. I had to restart that game over and over - not because of technical difficulties though: it intentionally has a "you lose forever" outcome. Not quick enough to the eject button? Game over! Start at the beginning. Fail a mission too many times? Game over! Start at the beginning. What killed me about the game is it seemingly had so much promise. It provided what seems to be a VERY realistic giant robot simulator (in fact it suceeds admirably at the simulation portion). Unfortunately, rather than making the game difficult via having a number of equally powerful foes with at least adequate AI, the designers decided it was far better if you simply had dozens of foes, some of which are capable of murdering you in a few shots, and all of them posessed terrible AI. To make matters worse, you were always fighting against arbitrary constraints, and failing any of them caused you to lose the mission. You could run out of health (i.e. die) you could run out of ammo (given the huge number of foes this was often incredibly easy to do), you could run out of time (every mission has a time limit, and it's usually painfully short), and you could even run out of fuel (which often makes the time limit seem even more arbitray when your fuel supply mandates it's own time limit).

Worse still? Many times the game had you trying to find items in any of the giant levels without the courtesy of telling you where they are. Nothing like looking for crates in a thick jungle environment under constant threat of ambush all while fighting against the limits listed above. In the grand scheme of things, considering the staggering cost of the game (nearly $200 USD when I purchased it), the game is probably the worst game I've ever played. So much promise and potential squandered at every turn with the most frustrating gameplay I've ever seen.

im gonna ***** about live here but for windows instead. gears, RIGHT before the last boss. had to reformat and reinstall windows, no big deal, went to the save game directory and backed up the save files to another hard drive i use for data only. got that done and reinstalled gears after the reinstall. then i went to look at my saves and guess what, FUCK NOTHING in the folder. went searching around the internet and found out that you cant back up gfwl saves because its tied to the account. just never went back and replayed it really, not interested in playing through again just to get back to where i was. live either needs to kill this shit or do what steam does and stores your save games over the internet.

had to start a elder scrolls 4: oblivion game again once cause i decided it would be fun to kill that lucien guy (from the dark brotherhood) who visits u after u murder someone.

restarted FF7 multiple times cause clouds date at the golden saucer wasnt satisfactory (i hate aerith)

restarted FF8 alot cause the game is so much easier if you keep your levels to a minimum and play cards alot to make super tough weapons so u 1 hit bosses at level 8!

I had to start Final Fantasy VII at least half a dozen times. The first time I played it, I didn't even own a Playstation so I was borrowing someone else's. Then later after acquiring a Playstation, I had to borrow just the game. And many memory card failures.

Too many memory card failures...

I never went back and beat that game for the simple fact that I just couldn't stand to see/play through the beginning even one more time.

I had to replay the first 8 hours of Half Life 1 (which included the first time you meet that damn fish *shudder*) just because I thought that Quick Save was a whole lot better than it really was.
Holy crap the exact same thing happened to me. I had just finished killing that three-headed snake-pit-monster-thing, quick-saved and shut it down for the night only to discover the next day that my brother had decided he wanted to play it too and quick-saved my poor Gordon Freeman into oblivion.

To this very day I still haven't finished Half-Life 1.

For me it was cave story, I hate it when there isnt a hint that you shouldnt take the gun, because it'll be better for later. Or having to avoid a old dying man, only to have him come back later to give you booster v2.0. I still loved the game.

I had to replay 22 PS3 games because I deleted (not by accident) my first profile. It was a bit frustrating but I enjoyed it most of the time.

Oh and it took me 2 months to get to status quo.

Final Fantasy Tactics.

I fought Wiegraf and was not equipped to beat him. NEVER SAVE PRIOR TO THIS BATTLE. I had to restart the game, get the auto-potion ability, buy X-Potions to use, and basically wait the fight out.

It sucked.

Fallout 3. My original character totally blew so I made an awesome one to replace it.

Fallout 3, I quicktraveled to a spot and for some reason it spawned me in a wall and wouldn't let me quicktravel to another spot because "enemies were nearby", tried to load a previous point and the game crashed and all the saves were corrupt.
Had to redo most of Oblivion to to random corruptions from game crashes.

Homeworld 2. Played it through the first 4 missions or so, got stuck and quit playing for a year. Then I went back and replayed all the missions so I could get used to the controls again and back into the story. That time I actually finished it.

Now I've got to get around to finishing Catacylsm(I played two missions and stopped for some reason).

Prince of Persia: Warior Within. I had to restart 3 times because each time i fell into an area you can't get out of, and when i wanted to get the alternate ending and realized that you can't get some of the areas when you're at the end-point of the game... tough...

Ah yes, I just remembered Soul Blazer. I was at the demon bird, the second to last boss. When you die you lose all your gems, which are required to cast spells, so when I died I just reset the game. This boss killed me two or three times, and I came back from the last reset to find my save file was erased.

The battery wasn't dead, as it held my saves during my replay. I might have switched off the system entirely after a reset, I don't remember. Again, I was younger when this happened.
