Don't bother, the story overall is absolutely horrible(even for the usual JRPG stereotype), the only draw to the game is if you actually enjoy the game part.

If you'd just like to skip it, here's a summary of what I could gather by maintaining a strict rule of skipping a cutscene the first time it made me cringe:

There are two cities. The main one has a bunch of Supermonsters, and the other one has one Supermonster. The Supermonsters are figurehead rulers with no real power. They can make people into Superpeople in exchange for doing some favor someday, after which you turn into some sort of glass for some amount of time, and then you retain your superpowers and go on about your business. All of your idiots lived in Main City but got exposed to Other City's Supermonster while all being on vacation at the exact same time and place but having, at best, friend of a friend relations with each other at all.

Since all the normal people hate Superpeople for no explained reason, all of you get sent to a slave camp, which just happens to house Other City's Supermonster. All of you accidentally meet up inside Other City's Supermonster for no real reason, and get turned into Superpeople, but Supermonster dies before it can tell you what you're supposed to do. Apparently that's bad, since if you don't do what you're supposed to, something bad that is poorly explained at best happens. So you immediately come to the conclusion that the Other City Supermonster wanted you to kill everyone in Main City, and head off to do that.

Then you switch sides like 15 times. Then another Supermonster reveals that your job was, in fact, to kill all the Supermonsters. That's apparently bad, because people need them in order to get food or oxygen or electricity or I don't know what, it's not explained. They can't just kill themselves or each other because of "the rules" which are never explained.

SO, you spend the entire game telling the Supermonsters that you refuse to kill them, fight your way through like three armies to get to them, then kill them by summoning some sort of barely-explained superpower that has nothing to do with anything.

THE END.

Any game that requires repeated consumption of work hours, or that extends as a secondary job. Games like Disgaea or MMORPGs, which people pump hundreds of hours into. I can understand MMOs with the concept of guilds and friends to interact with, but games like Disgaea I will NEVER understand, despite trying Disgaea 3 out for 60 hours before realising I was wasting my time.

Any of the Final Fantasy games. I'm just not really into things like that, though I do admit that FF13 looks brilliant, graphically.

I'm fighting to love DA:O. I thought DA2 would be the driving force I would need to get into it but the melee combat in DA:O is just so borked. I'll finish it and I will love the story and such but it won't be an easy ride for me.

Out of curiosity TC, what games DO you like? You named a good variety of AAA titles, so I'm curious where your preferences lie.

OT:
- WoW - Don't care for PC games, let alone time-sucks that lead to child endangerment and job loss.
- Assassin's Creed - I have the first one, and I've started it a few times, but for some reason I always just end up moving on.
- Left 4 Dead - I've always been too busy with other games to try these.
- Dead Rising - Another game I've been too busy to try. The concept itself doesn't scream "must play" to me. Eh.

Half-Life 2, Mass Effect 2, Oblivion, Red Dead Redemption and LittleBigPlanet.
I didn't like the Half-Life series because I found the story a bit disjointed and hard to follow, and that goes for Mass Effect 2 as well.
Oblivion just had too much shit going on at once, and it took about 50 hours of gameplay to get armor that doesn't look like crap.
Red Dead Redemption was tedious and just a drag to play through, and LittleBigPlanet has no lasting appeal. Yeah, the level creation is amazing and could be giving us beautiful new levels for years to come, but I said COULD, no IS. At the time of playing all I was getting was bomb survival games and shark survival games.

God of War, I played the first one and I loved it, but the sequels I found to be bland, all about spectacle and flashy graphics and gore instead of any actual motivation to go through the game. All my mates love it and go on about how increadible fights are in GOW3 leaving me to just nod my head and placidly agree. I preferred Onimusha, or even Devil May Cry.

But what do I know eh?
I just started the God of War series this year (I just finished the HD release of the second one today, actually) and can totally understand why anyone wouldn't like it. I'm not of fan of all the quick time events and I despise the platforming (rule #1 of 3D platforming: Give the player control of the camera). But I absolutely love the spectacle of the game. The boss fights are great (until the finishing move...quick time events usually) and the set pieces and overall visuals are magnificent.

I live in Urugauay where football is the most popular sport but I dislike every football/soccer game. I like to watch football, though I'm not a hardcore fan, but playing Pro Evolution Soccer, some FIFA edition or Winning Eleven is just soooooo boring. I find the games mechanics and physics to be awkward (though my friends say that these "feel very real") and I see no point in sitting in fron of a TV or PC in order to play something that I could do IRL (ok, maybe I play a lot worse than any semi-pro football player but kicking a ball is something everyone can do)or I could watch in a better way just by turning on the TV.
That's very disrespectful to the legless members of the Escapist community. (Sorry, bad joke, been seeing a lot of people get offended at nothing on these forums for no real reason and had to make fun of them)

On the topic at hand, I couldn't get into the Metroid Prime games. It's probably because I hate 1st Person viewpoints and it felt like an easier COD type game to me.

I'll agree with OP, Uncharted just doesn't appeal to me. It's not like it's a bad game, just not amazing in any way, and I consider it not worth my time.

Final Fantasy VIII: I know a lot of people who consider this among their all time favourite games, and it's actually probably the FF I've played the most, just because I was always hoping I'd finally realise how good it was. This game's a nightmare, excruciating to play and the plot's got more holes than a block of Swiss cheese in a rat's nest.
HUH???

*Blink, blink, blink*

Who? I never hear anyone pouring their heart out over FF8. Normally, the range in which I hear is "Meh" to "GRRRAAAAAAUUUGHHH!!!"...which is pretty much neutral-to-bad. I'm gonna have to actually wonder...where does a sect in Final Fantasy fandom that enjoys FF8 lurk? Not here, I know. It's one of those games that I can just rant and rant and rant...and NOBODY calls me on it.

I state - every time I talk about this game - that I will supply walls of text as evidence towards why this is a bad game. Some people actually told me they ENJOY these (odd though it sounds). However, that's neither here nor there, because I DO kind of understand the game. It's veeery simple. Everyone in the game is braindead, including the villain. Easy.

If the games herein count, Touhou Project. Sure, they can be fun at times, and the character designs are all right if somewhat bizarrely manufactured (most of these girls are supposed to be demons? really??), but I can't for the life of me see the same charm that most other fans do. Maybe it's because I'm somewhat against the infamous "moe" sub-sect of manga art (or whatever you wanna call it) or something, but I honestly can't see how people have fallen head-over-heels with the series.

Addendum: Also, most JRPGs. This may be because I'm of the impression that RPGs allow you to play a role and allow you to mold the character as you see fit, within the confines of the game of course. I'd much rather play a character I created give him/her whatever creative (read: fucked-up ass) backstory I feel like versus having to go around using a preconfigured character with his or her own motivations. That and most JRPGs have too much number-crunching for my tastes (you can say the same for some WRPGs I sure), and most also rely on turn-based combat, which I absolutely detest. Ergo, I fail to see how many others herald them so much.

Well, it's probably any Bethesda game that I played. Oblivion and Fallout 3 have some of the worst gameplay I've ever played, and I'm not trying to be a troll. But there's too much damn micromanagement at times and the utter lack of direction in a giant, bland world kills my love for them. I'm trying to get more into Fallout 3 though, as it shows more promise.

Final Fantasy. It's funny because I just adore jrpg's but Ive always hated this series. Ive never found the characters compelling but I do enjoy the art. However the battle style... naw. Not for me. Maybe it's my preference to turn base but the old school real time always bugged me. Course I like to think about my moves rather than being rushed.
I'm sure that you can disable the ATB in the Options. Also, the best Final Fantasy is Tactics. Check out either version.

I enjoyed the game despite all of its flaws, but I'm such a whore for good music that I can forgive almost anything.

I've tried and tried, but I just can't get into Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Halo.

I dunno what it is about Mass Effect. I played through the first one, I really enjoyed the universe, some of the characters (Urdnot Wrex is a Boss) are great and I really loved all of the mythos behind the game universe, but I just couldn't stand the rest of the game. The dialogue, some of the other characters, the combat. Just about everything else was so droll.

As for Dragon Age, I never liked the look, styling or anything else about it from the get-go. I gave it a chance and played about 20 minutes of it at a friend's house, but I just couldn't stand it.

Maybe it's somkething in the way Bioware make's their games. I dunno, they just don't ring out for me.

As for Halo, I was never a fan. The game looks alright, until those stupid fucking little aliens, the grunts, pop up and start being retarded. I just don't like the feel of combat, it feels too floaty and all of the guns looks like fisher-price kids toys.
