Alright so I'm shipping off to university in September (studying music in London just out of interest). So there's a big question I wanted to ask you guys. Is it a good idea to take my games console to keep in my dorm room? I'm staying in halls/dorms so I'll have my own room with a lock but I guess people would still be able to come in my room at various times. Would it be stupid to take my Xbox and not expect it to get stolen or something like that?

Also, just post your general experiences of how your gaming life changed while you were at university.

I wouldn't take anything to any place that isn't 100% secure, but that's just me.
The annoying thing is my Xbox would probably be the least valuable "expensive" thing in my room anyway. After my laptop and musical instruments and stuff.

Twats will be twats and they will still steal your shit if it is advantageous.

Sadly you're right.

One of my biggest concerns when I went to college was having private gaming time. Sure, there are plenty of social games to play with others in the room but as myself being a RPG lover I'd prefer playing in private. Since you have your own room with a lock I'd say you will be fine. Just lock up and make sure no one can steal your valuable gaming collection.
This is kinda what I was thinking as well. Like how much I'd actually get to play games and stuff. I don't play multiplayer that much anyway, so it would just be me holed up in my room achievement hunting.

Aside from getting it nicked, you could not take it, thus forcing you to seek out fun and frivolity with other like-minded students. ^_^ There's lots of that going around.

I found I turned to (very) casual gamer when I went to uni. There was too much to do and too little time to do it in...but that's just my experience....

I'm in my fourth year of university now and I've brought a games console with me each year. I've never had any trouble, just don't do anything stupid like leaving your door wide open when you're not there and I'm sure it'll be fine.

In terms of the effect of gaming at Uni, I found it a good way to get to know your housemates when the student loan runs out and you have to stay in. Pro Evo, Mashed and Guitar Hero help. Also helps to keep you sane when the deadlines start piling up.

Also, if your anything like me, you'll have plenty of spare time in your first year. :p

I (like Shadow ^^) am at uni currently. However, I'm at Staffs, and I'm studying Games programming and design, so our student body has a modicum of repect for such matters (nobody came to steal the classic console collection, but many fun nights were had playing). Tbh, I never had any problems throughout halls or in the house thereafter. Just make sure you get to know the people around you.

Take it Easy

I'm honestly afraid that if I leave it at home I'll come home for christmas and my mum will have sold all my consoles and games. I think I'd cry if that happened :p

The halls I'm staying in have a few music practice rooms built in, whereas none of the others do, so there is a good chance most of the music students will be in the same building as me. This is good as I'll get to know them :)

Lock my consoles away before I leave? :)

It's ok as long as your roommate isn't an idiot. Keep your door locked when you're not around, he should do the same(he's got stuff to lose too!)

Did a lot of socializing by playing Smash Bros with other people in the dorm.

I'll have my own bedroom where I'm going. The things I'll be sharing are a bathroom, kitchen and like living room/space type thing :)

Ah then you'll definitely be fine since you can lock your own room. Bring your console, play with friends, and don't let games get ahead of studying.

I said earlier in the thread that I'm kind of a lonely gamer ... Anybody recommend some nice easy going multiplayer games for Xbox that wont require me to buy loads of instrumental peripherals?

Sports games are real popular in the college crowd. But if you're like me and you're not really into that thing, Fight Night was pretty popular too(even though it's just 2 player).

Castle Crashers is fun and cheap, but you can only keep playing it until you're done with the campaign, then there isn't much more replay value to tease out. In fact, there's quite a few XBLA games that lend well to multiplayer.

There's good odds that the other people will have their own consoles too, and you could just arrange playtimes with them from your respective rooms:p
