RIYADH ? An angry four-year-old Saudi boy shot and killed his father for refusing to buy him a
PlayStation, Saudi media reported on Monday.

The Asharq daily, citing police in the southern Jizan area, said the child, aged four years and seven months, grabbed his father's pistol and shot him in the head.

According to the newspaper, the child had asked his father to buy him a PlayStation and the shooting took place after the man returned home without the desired object.

As he was undressing, the man put the weapon down, which the child then grabbed and fired at him from close range.

Not to mention general parenting. I mean, I can understand a kid that age crying their eyes out when they don't get what they want, but if he went for the gun, he knows that guns mean violence to some degree. Could there really have been no past signs or even an escalation in the conflict that led to the shooting?

This is an awful story. It has nothing to do with gaming obviously, simple childish greed, but points out yet another reason why civilian gun access can be a bad thing.

It's an awful story. Yet how does a kid at four years old know how to use a gun, know what it will do, and even go get the gun?
This is just bad parenting, and letting the kid do what he wants.

To be fair, I think it wouldn't be inaccurate to assume the child learned this mentality from video games. You don't like something? Shoot it in the head.

What caused this:
-The parent not teaching the child how to accept when things don't go their way
-The parent leaving a loaded weapon in easy access for a four-year-old
-The parent exposing his four-year-old to violence without teaching him proper context or the value of life and the concept of reality

If anything, it's another argument for the side of games teaching violence because the parents don't teach children anything themselves.

I don't know what it's like there, but where I live, it's not uncommon for regular civilians to open carry or concealed carry pistols, because it's legal (the latter is, at least, should you get a permit required to do so)

Yeah, this is MUCH more about the father being careless with his gun and an unruly child that will no doubt need therapy once he's old enough to really regret what he's done to his family than being about a Playstation.

In Saudi Arabia criminals are punished by having a hand cut off or being beheaded - even for non-violent crimes. If the government and law systems work in a violent manner then how should this child know any better?
