Ugh, this makes me think of my friend Kateri.

Whenever she texts or chats with me online, she says things like "el oh el" or "keke", and other stuff like that. Also, "yoo" and "ii" or "&&" on purpose, not on accident.

Ugh.

i don't mind internet speech by itself. for instance, i use the term "lol" and i have friends who use "1337" and that alone doesn't bother me. what i do hate is when entire sentences are made from it (usually found in Lolcat form) and what annoys me more is how people somehow become completely fluent in it, especially people who i would have least expected to become so fluent and would start messaging me in that form.

another thing i've found that does annoy me by itself (well, its never really used otherwise) is the term "/thread"
why do you ask? because its never used properly. a mod comes along, finds that a thread is attempting to breed... i don't know, a cult of anti-somethings or other, the mod posts "this is inappropriate, this has to stop now. /thread" and then the mod will proceed to close the thread, placing probations and even banning certain culprits. that would be it in proper use. but its not even necessary in its proper use, the mod doesn't really need to post that.

its only ever used in the context "here-is-my-opinion-which-is-evidently-correct-and-thus-there-is-no-further-need-for-discussion. /thread"
and i don't know, that just really grinds me. i read that in the high pitched "nyeh nyeh nyeh, self righteous tosser, nyeh nyeh" voice and its just.... grrrrr

i guess its really slang, its just using something that sounds like a command to be entered into the "run" program. and it just makes them seem like self righte... oh wait, i already said that. either way, the thread never ends just after they type that, there will be at least another page of posts past theirs within a few minutes. And their opinion is usually beaten by something much more convincing as that someone else took time and effort to present their own opinion, rather then just spewing something that can barely be considered a response and smugly stating "/thread".

and now i feel the need to type an extra sentence, just so i can't be accused of hypocrisy as without this my post would end in the dreaded words (quotation marks aside) that i so hate.

Aye, people should learn to type everything out fully. I can't stand talking to people who type phonetically.
It makes me laugh how none of my friends seem to do it, yet all of our parents do when texting.

:p What does it mean?
seriously? tilt your head anti-clockwise approximatly 90 degrees and look at the colon which is followed by the capitilised "p", which i have demonstrated below

:p

you may notice it looks very vaguely like a face. the two dots which make up the colon represent eyes, the capitalised "p" represents a cheeky grin with a tongue sticking out.

now, what you don't do is overthink the concept from there. don't look in the mirror and try to get your tongue and smile to look like that. because it looks retarded. its not even immitating a real human face, its almost cartoony. damn does that annoy me, why do people do this... and you're right, what does it mean? when people use it against me are they trying to suggest something devious or are they patronising me because i get worked up too easy over the concept of a p following a colon. weird isn't it?

"U".
I just don't get it.
Next thing you know saying "You too" is replaced by a picture of U2's latest album.

"Noob" or even worse "boon"
its just idiotic and i hope usage of these terms causes cancer
Huh, never heard "boon" anywhere. I'm assuming it's a smartly-stupid way of saying "noob", right?
Also, what's the difference between "noob" and "newb", aren't they the same?

Plus it makes people look like complete idiots. That and skipping punctuation and axing "unnecessary" vowels. LANGUAGE RULES EXIST FOR A REASON PEOPLE! (even if English isn't fond of following them, still)

I hate TL;DR
...I don't even know what the hell that's saying and I've seen it everywhere! Can you enlighten me on this?
It stands for Too Long ; Didn't Read. Basically people being lazy.

For me, it's leet or txt. Leet was meant to be used by hackers to get around word filters (such as hack (becoming hax or h4x), you (becoming j00) and newbie (n00b)). This basically meant that they could use IRC without triggering warnings, also giving anyone searching their machine for evidence of hacking an extra problem. If you search for references to "hack", nothing comes up, as it's all under "h4x". Txt was created when we used to pay for texts by the character, not the page. Less characters, cheaper texts. Now, if you ask me "do u lyk me?", the answer is going to be "No, speak English, you stupid idiot." Seriously, if you're going to use the language, give it the respect it deserves.

Oh, and it's pretty widely accepted that a new player is a "newb", as their lack of skill is due to them not having enough experience to avoid "newbish" situations. A "n00b" is someone that has the experience, but doesn't learn from their experience. To put it into perspective, someone who runs directly across the line of fire in an FPS might be a newb, they don't know the flow of the map. Someone who throws a grenade into a room that they know contains 3 friendly and 1 enemy is a n00b. They have the knowledge, they just don't use it.

I'm with the OP about 'pwn', I HATE that term and any variation of it ('pwned', 'pwning', etc.). It's not a word and anyone who uses it looks like they failed Grade 1 spelling (or can't type worth shit). What's even more idiotic is it originated from some idiot making a typo.

This doesn't exactly fit, but at this point in the discussion everything else I would say has been said:

What is the deal with teabagging? I just don't understand it; if I'm going to desecrate a corpse in a video game I'd prefer to shoot the thing across a room, outside, and off a cliff if the physics will allow it. Second best option is something like the crossbow in half-life 2 that nails people to the wall right where you killed them: satisfaction and a warning to everyone that walks by.
